Sydney Spies's yearbook swaps sexy photo for ID shot, mom to file complaint

Big photos below.
Durango High student Sydney Spies's protest over her yearbook's rejection of two sexy photos landed her on the Today show. Afterward, Miki Spies, her mom, told us Sydney had submitted a third photo, but that, too, has been nixed in favor of the shot from her school ID card.

As a result, Miki and family plan to file a complaint over the entire matter.

As we've reported, here's the first photo that editors refused to publish:

The reported rationale? The image was deemed unacceptable because it violated the school dress code, which calls for tops that "fully cover the chest, back, abdomen and sides of the student."

Due to this response, Spies turned in a second shot:

This one was also a no-go, Miki reveals. In her words, "The editors said they wanted to maintain their award-winning status, and they felt it wasn't professional."

Miki didn't specify the third photo she submitted from a shoot recently posted online by the photography shop in question, Thru the Lens Fine Portraits. But she confirmed that it was another "model-type photo" -- one that she felt would only receive a thumbs-down if the yearbook editors were "scrutinizing it too much."

What happened next? According to Miki, the folks at the yearbook "said she didn't get the photo to them in time and ignored it. And that's when they put in her ID picture, which is just kind of a mug-shot-type picture."

This decision made Sydney "very angry," she continues. "She requested that no photo be used. But I don't think they're going to do that. I think they're going to use the ID one, even though she would rather it not be."

For Miki, this was the last straw. Along with Sydney's father and her partner, she plans to copy a formal complaint to the school board and the superintendent in the hope that they "acknowledge that there's been a lot of mishandling of this situation" -- one that's spiraled out of control since the story broke.

"Sydney feels very bullied, by the entire school, basically," she maintains. "The school has been awful and the kids have been awful. She's received very little support in any way from anybody. There's been a ton of cyber-bullying, where people can say whatever they want without looking the person in the eyes. It's been extremely hurtful for our entire family."

Things have gotten worse since the Today show appearance, Miki believes. She maintains that Sydney had an "A" in the yearbook class before she left, but returned to a "C," even though she'd turned in all of her assignments. She adds that Sydney has since dropped the class -- and she'll be leaving the school as a whole soon. Miki notes that administrators arranged for Sydney to take an online class that will allow her to complete all of her graduation requirements early -- about three weeks from now.

Sydney's Durango High experience hasn't been all bad: Miki says she got a lot out of a kid-to-kid program that paired her with a special needs student, for example. But in the wake of the yearbook controversy, she says, "it's been horrible."

The picture is appropriate for the yearbook, and it should have been published. The school administration was in the wrong to censor the picure. Sydney is talented and will be very successful. She will be a great actress doing big blockbuster movies and smashing box office records.

She is peaking right now. So she needs all the glory she can get. In 5 years when she is losing her hair getting fat and has three kids we all would wish we can go back to seeing these photos.

Another case of mama trying to live the life she wanted through her child. Sad thing is, the child is suffering from mom's grab for attention. Both knew there weren't but a couple of those photos that were appropriate for a high school yearbook and they didn't submit them.

did the poor willte pricess get her feelings hurt??   Just another Tracy Lords in the making. Remember the 15 year old that made the news as a centerfold and went into making porno films?  Mama needs a smack alond side her head for letting her daighter act out like this!

It is so inappropriate for a high school student to pose provocatively in a yearbook. It does not represent the school well and borders on illegal. These people need to wake up and respect the boundaries of civility. Selfish people that want to be exceptions to a rule have to face the music.

Next time just put star on your nipples, why even bother with that ugly black drapery in which u can't lift your hands! oh and that ugly yellow skirts that cries for ironing could be even more transparent. Plus don't forget to lick your lip while u're looking seductively at the camera.

These pictures belong in a Modeling Agency brochure...go ahead, take them there, promote yourself in the right place, make a career out of it!.....in a High School Year Book? ...no way...that book is an Academic Record...very different purpose...you both need to understand the difference... but more so your Mom.

I think a lot of people are missing her real intentions. Don't think the year book is the real focus. When sh submitted the original photo and it was rejected, that started a small internet controversy story. Now that the yearbook staff has taken it upon themselves to swap the photo out and the mom is filing complaint, she is all of a sudden gettting a lot more attention. She now has about twnety some photos on several hi traffic websites for all to see. Didn't need an agent  or publicist. Someone wiil offer her some sort of modeling job or photo shoots etc. and she may make a good paycheck or two or she may end up on some reality show making big bucks. You never know but it hasn't really cost her much whatever the out come.

I just wish this girl and her stupid mother would disappear.  Why doesn't she just become an x-rated porn star and forget this inappropriate high school stuff.

What's worse: This mom's glorification of her daughter's slutty "model" pics, or the fact that Westword has now published them all, for free, and given her tons of publicity she didn't deserve?

If I saw it correctly in the video. This school is the home of the devils. How can any school with that ridicule her. I think they should be something else.

yeah, love how Denver Post feels the need to post so many photos from her "shoot."

Some of the ones with jeans are fairly tame, can't they compromise on that?

Oh for crying out loud.  She's young and hot and she knows it and flaunts it.  So what?  Nothing wrong with it except your own guilt over your own dirty mind.  Thank God for the young and hot.  It reminds us of when we were young and hot!  Let them alone to be young and hot.

I suppose if you want to get attention and a possible career in modeling (good or bad) this would be the way to do it. I wish it would stop being news worthy,if you can really call it that.

"It's been extremely hurtful for our entire family."

Don't worry Miki, you're still a better parent than your own.  So, you didn't think this one through very well and "stood by your child" to pretty much ruin her life, but that's ok.  You both can get alot of mileage out of the forthcoming DUI, meth addiction, and appearance on the 23rd season of Celebrity Rehab:  Redneck Edition, or Dr. Phil, or the new Jerry Springer as "the small-town girl with those racy yearbook photos and her mom with the attention-seeking problem."

Or you could just acknowledge that you have a problem now, and let...it...go.

I made a leap & gave this girl the benefit of the doubt in the 1st story u guyz chose to publish being neither supportive or mean. But, COME ON!! Isnt this getting a little ridiculous?? This is really starting to be more about a little girl who thinks she's a grown up & not getting her way & having the opportunity to throw her tantrum about it on a semi-national level. it seems someone forgot to tell her about ALL the wonderful things that could happen to her as a result of said tantrum w/ her "friends", school chums, grades, etc. Damn, get on w/ it Syd, U LOST! MOVE ON! Lifes short girl, there WILL be other, more important windmills!!

I think it's gone on a little long. I believe she should post any photo she sees fit to post. If it's great, creepy or even sleezy it's ok. You see, it is what it is.

If Syd is looking for a window into Playboy, cool! I suport her in that. I've spent a little time around Playboy a zillion years ago. Playboy never hurt anyone I knew. I rather like Playboy Magazine, I found it a good way to meet people.

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, probably is a duck. If it looks like a ho... I've worked with lotsof of senior pictures but none as tasteless as these. She doesn't want to be thought of as a slut then don't act it! Butt thrusts, legs spread, up against a wall like a cheap X rated ho saying "Do me boys!" Reason for the class grade was she didn't learn the lesson. Story out of control? The Spies brought it on by talking to the media. Everyone can see how wrong they are but them. Because of their naiveness they are a laughing joke.

Seriously, this is a cute girl.  That being said, why does she feel the need to grab the spotlight and try to appear to be "better" or "cuter", or "sexier" than the rest of her classmates?  I'm all for individuality, but when it comes to school programs, (and let's keep in mind, these ARE school aged CHILDREN), there needs to be some type of conformity.  If she wants to be a model, fine, go be a model.  But I see no sense in making the school your platform, so to speak.  There are plenty of other avenues to take.

TJ Giancaterino

uhh maybe if a high school student wasn't posing like a maxim cover model then the school would be more understanding. im sure parents would love to be browsing through their child's yearbook and find a half-dressed girl posing like a cabaret dancer.

Why can't she just take a normal school photo for the yearbook and be done with it? What a weak attempt for attention.
