Glenn Beck rips 9News over coverage of Wyoming's "Doomsday bill"

Glenn Beck.
Glenn Beck, media critic? The pundit certainly wore that hat this week, devoting a giant segment of one broadcast to a virtually line-by-line dissection of a 9News piece about Wyoming's so-called "Doomsday bill."

Does he have a point?

Beck doesn't help his credibility by introducing the bit as an example of how the local Wyoming media is covering the legislation: House Bill 85, sponsored by Representative David Miller, which would enable a task force to prepare for a potential federal government collapse. And he's clearly got a dog in this fight. He sees the logic behind the legislation, and argues that every state should consider similar proposals.

Torres on the rampage.
Yet he still manages to make some strong arguments about the mocking tone of the 9News package, introduced by anchor Eric Kahnert and reported by correspondent Kevin Torres.

The bit's introduction suggests a disaster-movie trailer, with screen cards setting the date as Wyoming in 2042, after both New York and California have ceased to exist -- after which the scene cuts to a forced-perspective shot of a Godzilla-sized Torres about to devour the Wyoming Capitol building. That's followed by a description of the bill delivered in an about-to-burst-into-laughter tone featuring background music played on a banjo.

As one of Beck's cohorts notes, said instrument might as well be playing the theme from Deliverance.

Appropriate given the subject matter? The sort of over-the-top editorializing that makes one wonder why 9News decided to cover the subject in the first place? Or evidence that staffers have been watching a little too much of The Daily Show? Judge for yourselves below by viewing the 9News piece, followed by Beck's takedown of it. As a bonus, we've also included a copy of House Bill 85.

One last bit of irony: When I logged on to 9News to watch the station's coverage, the web ad over the screen, for St. Anthony Hospital, read "EMERGENCIES HAPPEN 24/7." Betcha Beck would see that as karma.

Beck used to have an aufience of millions on Fox News. Now he's only got about 230,000 paid subscribers on GBTV.

IIRC, every state has an emergency management agency (EMA), similar to FEMA.

All Miller had to do was task his WY EMA to look at scenarios for major events, like a FLU pandemic, where order, basic services, food distribution, etc, have to be maintained.  Putting forth a separate bill is just grandstanding, more GOP fear mongering designed to scare people, which is a basic tactic of the GOP, NRA, anti-gay groups, enviro's, etc.

Just another GOP clown-car circus, with Glenn Beck as the horse's ass pulling it.

The "reporting" if you can even call it that makes Kevin Torres look like an even bigger tool than Beck. The inclusion of the banjo playing in the background was an excellent addition to make 9news look as stupid as they were trying to make Wyoming out to be.

This is bad coverage of Wyoming, both by the "local news station" (from another state), and by Glenn Beck. The melodramatic tone of the 9News story is ludicrous, at best, and I take extreme exception to the characterization of Wyoming citizens as "cowboys," as well as the unnecessary mention of our lower population density (what does it matter that our state's population is smaller than your city's, Mr. Torres?), which seems to imply that only a crazy rural state would pass something like this. Moreover, Beck's paranoiac visions of catastrophe have little to do with the actual intent of the bill. For what it's worth, the final draft of the bill only established a inter-agency cooperative committee to investigate contingency plans in the event of various disaster scenarios--a practical measure for a government to take on behalf of its citizens. It also got killed in the Senate today, so you all can go back to ignoring our square state, the Saudi Arabia of the United States.

I don't believe I've ever agreed with Beck on anything, but he has a point here. The reporter from channel 9 is a joke.

I haven't heard anything about Beck for a while.  I guess he had to do SOMETHING to make people pay attention to him again.

How can he "not help his credibility" when he has none to begin with?

This guy Beck is a fear and hate mongering fool. He is so far out there that if he truly does have the 3rd largest radio show then we have  more religious right wing nuts than I thought. You have to be seriously F.... up if you actually believe all the hate filled lies this guy spews out of his mouth. The whole Fox news channel is out of touch with main stream America and caters to the minority part of the hate filled republican party.

Ummmm the banjo and the wild wild west go hand in hand. Kinda like Cowboys and Indians. Besides the fact judging by your comment you must watch Fox31 which says everything.

First of all if you have know any history on Wyoming cowboys / cowgirls go hand and hand. Besides that in his segment which I have gone over a few times I have found that he was giving you a compliment That Wyoming folk are tough and they are fighters. It was more an fun news segment that talks about a issue that is on a lot of peoples minds. So if you are going to really focus all your energy on the fact that he called you a cowboy, cause nearly all of Wyoming's state signs say "Welcome to the Cowboy State", you really need to get a life.

I don't believe a word that comes out of his mouth. The guy needs to be in treatment somewhere.......and off the air, where he can't harm impressionable or vulnerable people...

What's your agenda, Wyomingcowby, that you take such exception to my personal choice not to self-identify as a cowboy? Is it mandatory in Wyoming?
