Big pics below.
While mountain smoke shacks like the ones described in this week's feature, "Secret Stashes," tend to be, well, secret, they are also built on public land and are meant for any herb lover who finds them to stop in and enjoy however they see fit.

But there are some basic unwritten guidelines to follow.

Below are the top five etiquette tips I gleaned from talking with locals, perusing ski message boards and simply being a lifelong snowboarder.

5. Respect the Shack.
While adding your own memento or carving a slogan into a dead log are generally accepted, don't destroy someone else's hard work by pulling down benches to make rail slides or using the shack as a toilet. Also, if you stumble upon the rare shack complete with a bong inside, make sure the bong stays there safely for the next shacker to ski up and use.

There is no snow at Breckenridge right now so you can't get to any of the famous smoke shacks.  Getting high in town in Breckenridge is better than ever.  Word on the mountain is a couple of shacks got torn down, but as always a couple more went up.  Here is a map to all of the really nice shacks where you are sure to get a joint passed to you when in need http://highcountrycaregiver.com/wordpress/2011/01/leos-smoke-shack-peak-10/

Even if you dont know where the shacks are located when people  read this they will now know what goes on in those shacks. I expect a crack down on these shacks in the future. You dont poke the bear with a stick and expect it to not do any thing. I wouldnt be surprised if they make an example of these shacks now.

I know you want to spread the word but you are also laying out the red carpet for the police to come join you. If one person gets busted because they think they are safe in these shacks then you should bare some responsibility for bringing unwanted attention to this.

Cops troll these boards every single day and if you think other wise you are truly blind. Be careful what you say on these boards because the Local and feds will use this info. They did it to toke of the town even referencing an article of his in the warrant.

Though the smoke shacks are a mystery, and mysteries are like secrets, the smoke shacks themselves are not really like a secret that should be kept quiet.  Think of the smoke shacks as a place of mystery, you must not only find there location, but explore their meaning.  Finding the true meaning of the shacks and unlocking their secrets should be a goal of every cannabis loving skier!  Enhance your experience, expand your mind, and seek out places of mystery.  The more, the merrier.  If they get too trashed or too crowded, there's a lot of Forest Service land to just build more shacks.....

Smoke shacks: For those without the dexterity or innovation to figure out how to do it on the lift or in a tree clearing out of the wind.

Always the best place on the mountain to be!  Thanks for the great advice which isn't always so clear to us stoners.

Hey William, your #1 rule is to not give the exact location of these shacks, yet in the last article you wrote about them, you said that you have exact GPS locations to many of them on your website.  Whats up with that?

Also, some of the shacks are in fact old historic cabins, which are not allowed to just be knocked down.  Any construction or also destruction must be approved by the USDA National Forest Service.  No one is implying that anything illegal is happening in the shacks, you are allowed to be anywhere you want on resort property in-bounds, shacks included.  Just don't do anything illegal and don't get caught.

People go to the shacks to eat lunch, show their friends, sleep over night, shag, and other more interesting things occur, the sky is the limit really.  Besides shacks there are tons of interesting things in the forests of Colorado, you just gotta poke around!

Thanks for the comment, Valstar. The shacks we talk about have been around for 20-30 years, and have been covered extensively in other papers and ski magazines for years now. Ski patrol and the police on mountain have known about these and what goes on in them much longer than the week this article has been out. Also, as the feature I wrote talks about: the shacks all have their time, and when some go down others always pop up.

cops and ski patrol have been busting people in shacks before this article, and they'll continue to do it after. But also as the article mentions, they have much more pressing issues on the mountain these days than rousting a few stoners from their roost.

@High Country Caregiver I just want to mention something, these shacks, it`s just a small piece of crap shack in the woods, right? So people sit there and smoke and that`s it? More proof that potheads can be tremendous morons, you have a choice, a nice comfy place like a hotelroom or a rotten piece of crap shack in the woods. Only a 20 year old pothead would pick the shack, riddicolous.

@Bong I`d say smoke shacks; For young idiots. You have to be a moron to sit in a wooden shed smoking and think its fun, have some style and class, grow up, get a hotelroom or something, jesus.

I'm curious, has there been many front page stories about these shacks in a denver paper? point is bringing unnecessary attention to something. a front page article with a giant weed leaf on it is going to bring the gurches out. locals go to the shacks to aviod the mass of dipshits. thanks for fucking that up asshat

That's High Country Caregiver or HCC.  The smoke shack locations at Breckenridge are not a secret, like a lot of things, if you ski they will come!

Real locals are going to shacks that are actually secret, not the ones ski patrol has known about for the last decade that are already full of "gurches" (nice word, btw!)

That is if they go at all, of course. Most people I know smoke on the chairlift as to avoid stopping in the middle of a run for ten minutes and being an easy target for getting popped.
