Readers disagree about whether Mike Littwin layoff at Denver Post a pro or a con

Mike Littwin.
Our post yesterday about Penny Parker and Mike Littwin being laid off by the Denver Post was met with an explosion of commentary, much of it directed at Littwin, whose work is loved and hated with equal passion.

Here are two responses that capture the contrast.

Bruceplasket writes:

Too bad to see Parker go. She actually covered the business community. I'm very glad to see Littwin go. Now he can drop the facade and go to work directly for the Democratic National Committee. He's a tool.

Raskew writes:

Approximately 10 minutes after I heard about Mike Littwin being laid off by the Post, I called and cancelled my subscription.

I have been missing Mike, and have finally learned about his firing. I have subscribed to this paper for 10+ years and reading his column was one of the best parts. Shame on the Post to let go such an excellent writer.

One of the pieces I always looked forward to was Mike Littwin's editorial.  Funny, insightful, a true literary journalist.  We could always look for the sarcasm, hyperbole, and rhetoric of his work.  He demonstrated that The Post was open to all spectrums.  Not so much anymore.

Littwin's layoff deals a serious blow to the Post's editorial page.  His wit and wisdom has been a breath of fresh air, countering so many self important pundits.  He was much more balanced than your other columnists, and I am very disappointed in the Post.

Reading Littwin in the Post was a big reason I kept the subscription.  It recently lapsed, and I will not be renewing.

My husband and i are disgusted with the Denver Post for their dismissal of Mike Littwin.  Is Tina Giego next?  How about Ed Quillen ?  They're the only good writers.  There's nothing left to read.  Time to cancel after 40 years  Shame on the publishers.

For people who supposedly love Democracy, they need to look up the word.  It means opinion and discussion from all sides.  Whatever they think.  "the Liberal Media", what a joke.  When did the scumbag Rupert Murdoch buy the Denver Post??  It's true, all we are left with are democracy haters, woman haters, educated people haters, right wingnuts, fools that love nothing better than cleaning the shitcans of corporate america.

Mike Littwin was the best writer the DP had and they let him go.  What a shame.  He told it as he saw it, with intelligence, humor, attitude and with inbaskets of hate mail from teabaggers of all sizes.

I love newspapers but I gave them up today. When I cancelled, the phone rep asked if I would miss the coupons. No, I said, I miss the writers, because there are so few of them left, and Littwin was one of the final few. For those posting here with disdain for Littwin--those who can't get past their ideology-- the mastery of the craft that he possesses holds no value. Pity.

Can't stand Littwin.  Good to see him go.

The Post has become a chell of it's former self but that happened when the Rocky Mountain News closed its doors. Once Denver became a one paper town is when news coverage and aggressive column writing slumped big time. Unfortunately the Post doesn't recognize good editorial writing with humor. Instead they would rather we read the stale starched writing of Mike Poser Rosen who has no wit or humor at all in his columns. Wouldn't it be nice if Denver had two papers again that forced competition and good reporting and writing? I guess the age of newspapers and quality journalism are gone. What a shame.

Losing Mike Littwin is a very big deal for those of uslooking for some tiny semblance of balance in the DP's opinion columns. We willnow have, in declining order of lucidity, right-wingers David Harsanyi, VincentCarroll, John Andrews, and Mike Rosen. Ed Quillen would have to write twocolumns a day to even partly make up for the loss.

And for its trouble, the DP will continue to be regardedas a “commie rag” and referred to as the “Denver Pravda” by those on the right. Are these gentle folk the ones with whom the DP is trying to curry favor? Ifso, it is a fool’s errand.

Dismissing Mike Littwin is a lose-lose. The Post loses anappreciable part of its liberal and moderate readership, yet gains nothing fromfrom the right.

As of today, there is ZERO balance on the Post's Op-Ed page.

Carroll - pro-business at all costs, libertarian in general, conservative overall

Mike Rosen - an inhouse version of former Post and continuing regular  David Harzanyi - super libertarians who are as consistently specious as Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck.

Semi-regular John Andrews - see above.

There is no in-house truly moderate Op-Ed voice, let alone a liberal one, anymore

"Mattress ads and Mike Rosen" is about all that is left of the Postthat I once knew. I am sure our conservative pals are gleeful. Oneless reasonable voice to worry about in their defense of the moronswho are currently on their road trip for the presidential nomination.

Best wishes with: Mitt, Rick, and Newt, all of them throwingcream pies at each other - and now the Post does not havesomeone to keep score.

People are simply sick of liberals, sick of liberalism, sick of hippies and whiners and complainers. Maybe Littwin can sign on as a backup columnist to Mike Lupica in New York. 'Melo, Tebow, Littwin hello Big Apple...

RE: Bruceplasket... Littwin isn't a tool, he's the user of the tool. the "tool" is rational, liberal thought, critique and analysis... yes liberal. Whoaaaa, what a surprise. I suppose, Bruceplasket, you'd be equally surprised if Rush Lamebaugh (pun intended) lost his job as a result of justifiable public outrage, and then went to work for the Federal Republican Party's Ministry of Propaganda... cut me a break!

I to am a long term subscriber, and I will not be renewing.  The editorial page is now voided of all reasonable balance. Whether one agreed with Littwin's opinions or not, he would take his own party to task when he thought it was needed. That is something that Rosen and Harsanyi would never do to the right.  To them there can be no proper path but their own, and those with differing opinions are always wrong.  It is a good thing that our forefathers did not think that way, otherwise there would never have been an American revolution.

Really Jake?   Jack White--- you who've thieved this username and written in malicious impersonation of me and 40 other liberal commenters, over 2,200 times on The Hill in the past 3 years---- you seriously are a disturbed human being.

. Brilliantly said.  The Post has been a no news rag... telling two page stories that have no real meat.  It is sad when we become fearful of excellent writing, especially when laced with humor.  I posted his columns on my refrigerator.  Mike Littwin was not only intelligent, he was a wonderful wordsmith.

Hippies?

Who are the "hippies" you're referring to?

From the '60's, maybe?

I'm just guessing,  but I suspect you're an older, white, conservative rethuglicon fox news/rosen/caplis advocate.

If I missed, and you're younger, WTF? Get a life!

But.............if I'm right, there are two types of "older white conservative rethuglicons.

Type 1. Former hippies that aggressively dodged the Vietnam draft, then became "red blooded, kill 'em all republicans" once they were too old to be drafted. That would be like Bill Owens, Dick Cheney, Both Ways Bobbi Beauxprez, Neal Boortz, and Newt Gingrich. .

Type 2. CONservatives that aggressively dodged the Vietnam draft by faking physical or mental conditions, then became "red blooded kill 'em all repubs  like Jack Kemp, 1Y Tommie T Tancredo, Rush Limbaugh, and Teddi Nugent.

Either of those 2 choices makes you an ill or uninformed hack, quack, fraud and a phony!

Like every repub I've ever known.
