Photos: Occupy Denver takes an anti-ALEC tour of downtown Denver

Big photos below.
The 16th Street Mall was temporarily shut down Wednesday, when Occupy Denver staged a march against the American Legislative Exchange Council. ALEC is a conservative nonprofit that favors large corporations, demonstrators said, and its membership includes over 2,000 state legislators. The protest under the banner of "Shut Down the Corporations" was part of a nationwide Occupy protest, with over sixty cities participating.

Denver protestors referred to the march as an "educational anti-ALEC tour of downtown Denver," guided by "Alex from ALEC" -- she was disguised in a blonde wig and wished to remain unidentified. Stops along the tour included corporations benefiting from ALEC: the State Capitol Building, Phrma, Wells Fargo, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Verizon, Century Link and Van Cise Simonet Detention Center.

Occupy Denver protester Tim Holland, who helped organize the Denver tour, refers to ALEC as "basically doing the work of a lobbyist."

"People talk about the new world order and these secret conspiracies that don't really exist, but ALEC is a conspiracy that actually exists," he says. "They're responsible for getting a thousand laws passed every year, they have state legislatures that are part of their organization. It's literally like all the biggest organizations use ALEC to get laws passed."

MoveOn and Colorado Wants to Work, a pair of nonprofit advocacy groups, also joined Occupy protesters in the anti-ALEC protest.

"The constitution says corporations aren't supposed to write our laws, but indeed that's what is happening," says Kathleen Markle, regional organizer of Colorado MoveOn. "See how many companies there are writing really bad legislation to help their company, and it has nothing to do with the American people. So this is the day we're protesting it."

The tour began at the Occupy Denver home base in Civic Center Park at 3 p.m. and progressed up the steps of the Capital Building. Call and response chants of "Whose streets? Our Streets!" echoed as riot police unsuccessfully tried to direct protestors out of the streets and onto the sidewalks.

Each stop along the tour consisted of an "educational speech" about how ALEC is involved with the corporation and how it denies the rights of citizens -- followed by chants of "Fuck you (insert respective corporation)."

En route to Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, occupiers made a surprise stop at the privately-owned Denver Pavilions, where things got a little heated: Guards forced protesters out of the area, and protestors cooperated before any arrests were made. Generally, peace between cops and protesers remained until the final stretch of the tour when one Occupy protester was arrested for not remaining on the sidewalk during the march.

Wow. Westword does a good job of masking the fact that there was a very small handful of people in this thing. Occupy Denver is basically about 20 idiots now. I can't believe the media even pays attention any more.

what a stupid socialist group of commies.

we already have a US Constitution which is perfect, there is nothing illegal about corporations, but every politician in DC is a traitor.

Corporate fast food is about as bad as it gets.Example: John Hickenlooper's Duffy's Cherry Cricket. The crooked Corporate Mayor, John Hickenlooper was too cheap to hire legal labor so he hired a criminal illegal allien, Suereno 13 gang member as a Dishwasher, that assassinated Denver Police Officer Donnie by cowardly shooting him in the back of the head.In America we don't have to work for corporate fast food and if we do we can try to Unionize. It's still way better here in the United States with corporate fast food.In the former Soviet Union the KGB would come to your apartment and kick your ass if you didn't get out of bed on time and go work for the co-operative.

Here is an example of government corruption here in Denver: Google RTD Light Rail Train Crash

3 questions for you.

1. Do you know what ALEC is?

2. Do you know why these activists marched?

3. Are you a top 1 per center?

If you answered "no" to 3, you need to learn the answers to 2 and 3. (Strike that, I meant to say since you answered "no"..........).

Thanks to these activists for being there without the rest of us, no matter what our reasons for being absent are.

The people behind ALEC are the Koch like individuals that fund Walker in Wisconsin, Snyder in Michigan, the Congressional teabag reds, and all union busting movements nationally.

The occupy numbers have diminished, true, but their message is now receiving national........indeed international............coverage.

You and others of your "ilk".......... the dolt "guesto" for one..........are unknowingly benefiting from the activism of these people, or.....................you know you are and you're simply ungrateful mooches, wallowing in your own self perceived "ruler of your own destiny" delusions.

We're all connected, asshole, whether you want to admit it or not.

And thank you to the Occupiers.

The Constitution was/is not a perfect document, that's why there are amendments.

Can you even define what Communism or a Communist is WITHOUT consulting the internet or a dictionary? I would wager not, as most people that toss that term around cannot. Can you tell me the difference between Communism\Communist and Socialism\Socialist? Again, I would wager not, because they are used interchangeably by people that are ignorant, but I digress. So, if every politician in DC is a traitor, then we really do need to watch the 'legal' corporations... Especially considering that the 'trairors' in DC openly take payments from large corporations (their "special interest groups" and PACs), you need to ask yourself - Are they the traitors, or are the people PAYING them to vote the way they do the traitors. I better stop now as I am sure you cannot wrap your head around what I am saying anyway.

Speaking of Corporate Fast "Food", why hasn't the FDA (the "F" stands for "Food", after all) taken a more enlightened approach and require that, say, a Big Mac has to go through the same sort of safety and efficacy review that Viagra does?

There is no place for you here as you make comments that are based on fact. Come back when you can throw some terms around that you don't understand.   ;)

Seriously though, cheers.  :)

You said it quite well. These protestors will get no respect from me as long as they are interfere with my right to drive down the street. They are waging war on the masses by blocking the streets.I am fully aware of the corruption, the Banks, Subprime but don't take it out on me. I knew all this was going to happen before it did and nobody cared to listen except the Public Trustee in Adams County. Everyone was making money out of nothing. They keep reinventing how to make money out of nothing; the financials that brought on the meltdown. We are in the eye of the huricane. It's calm now. Just wait until they try to bomb Iran. It's going to happen and don't blame me for predicting the future. How will they strike Iran? They are just too formidable. I foredoom Iranian nuclear menace by an Israeli nuclear strike by submarine.

Yawn.  You douches are like a broken record.  Not clever enough to move beyond the level of street punk and too stupid to realize that you have many of the same mannerisms and viewpoints of those you wish to overthrow.

I am willing to join you as a photographer on the sidewalk.I am not willing to take sides politically. Life is too short to get ivolved in politics. My work is film, recording history, putting in museums oneday. We have a Constitution and a Bill of Rights. We would be fools to change it.History is full of conflicts and wars, peace is short lived.I've done fast food as a kid. It was alright, free food, I bought a used car.Fast food is better than nothing. You can't Unionize it because it is unskilled labor. They will chew you up, spit you out, replace you so you move on.You know if your in the streets, traffic has to flow. You understand that, traffic has to flow and the cops have a job to do.If I am looking through a lens of a camera my field of vision is narrow.I will be one of the first ones to get teargas or a night stick when the man comes down.I'm not into it. I know another conflict is coming and with it hard times.I just want to get through it and do my life's work with film. ok?

Light Rail Tattler- Are you an idiot?  By slamming a government, I'm endorsing it? WTF?  You have a problem with us blocking the street, I have a solution. Join us. It's too bad you have to deal with nuisances in your life but some things have to be a nuisance, like fighting for freedom and protesting injustice. You've said more than once, you don't like to criticize our movement so, what? Are you addicted to complaining? You can't stop yourself? I think people like you love to complain, 'cause there's nothing else going on in their lives worth talking about. Where would you have us protest, in our homes, with our doors and windows shut? Of course protests disrupt the normal flow of events, that's their purpose. We employ protest  only after, other methods of communication have failed.

Light Rail Tattler

Are you endorsing the communist government of North Korea? There are no protestors in North Korea because they put them in Gulags until they die.

I really do not like to be critical of your movement, but you are blocking the street.I know your numbers are small now and a nuisance. I predict a large surge if a military conflict occurs with Iran because I believe a military conflict will cause great harm to the economy and hardship for the masses.  Iran did have a moderate government and was becoming more so. President Bush did not endorse the previous moderate government so what Iran has now is a harsh dictatorship.

Lemmingeater

Oh, by the way, you don't have a right to drive down the street, check it out. They call it a privilege.

Lemmingeater

Light Rail Tattler- Inconvenience is part of life. The actions are necessary to wake the slumbering masses to the fact that things are not as cozy as they'd like them to be. How would you like to've been born in North Korea, there's no problem with protesters there. I suppose if you were in Selma in the 60's, you would've considered Dr. King a nuisance too.We aren't your oppressors, you are your own.
