Peyton Manning signing Black Monday for Tim Tebow fans, says Dan Caplis

In Caplis's view, "Tebow brings to the field something nobody else can right now. He's not only performing at a higher level than most of the great quarterbacks in NFL history at this point in their career, but he brings the promise and potential of fifteen more years of this. And that's unique. Denver's already won Super Bowls, but I thought the point was to become a dynasty -- and Tebow gives us the potential to become a dynasty. No matter how great Peyton Manning is, he's at the tail end of a great career, and he doesn't offer that potential."

Nonetheless, the Broncos have committed to Manning and are reportedly planning to trade Tebow at the earliest opportunity, much to Caplis's chagrin. His radio partner, Craig Silverman, argues that if you love Tebow, set him free -- meaning it's kinder to give him a chance to start for another team rather than force him to sit on the bench and watch Manning. Caplis, though, sees things another way.

"If the organization's goal is to win, then the only rational thing to do is keep Tebow," he says. "He is off to one of the best starts in NFL history and has a tremendous future in front of him. Where are you going to find a backup who gives you a better chance to win if Manning gets hurt? And Tebow could emerge from this unnecessary apprenticeship in a stronger position, and with a stronger team. The Broncos are likely to build up the team for Manning in a way they weren't doing for Tebow, so that would mean Tebow would end up with a better team afterward."

What about team dynamics? Wouldn't the continuing presence of Tebow breed division especially among his most loyal fans?

"I think there's a legitimate concern that with Tebow here, and his proven performance on the field, that if and when the Broncos start to falter with Manning, people are going to want Tebow back on the field," he says. "Last year, the Broncos told us the best way to win was with Kyle Orton, and our show and the fans said, 'No. Tebow gives us the best chance to win.' And we were proven right. And if it's all about winning, wouldn't you want to keep the best talent you could and not worry so much about everybody's feelings?"

As for his own emotions, Caplis is confident he'll be able to rein them in should Tebow be sent packing.

"If the Broncos are truly going to throw away a fifteen-year future with Tim Tebow, that's going to be very sad and I'm not going to forget it," he concedes. "But I am a positive guy and I love the Broncos. I've probably missed seeing ten Broncos games on TV in the past 35 years -- ten max. So I'm going to be positive about this and root for the team, and for Manning's success. And I know Tebow is going to be successful wherever he goes."

I missed the part where Kaplis explained why he knows better than John Elway. Perhaps if Manning agrees to be born again before the NFL season Kaplis will permit him to play.

You mean John Elway who said Kyle Orton gave us the best chance to win?  You wonder why Caplis knows better than Elway?  Open your eyes man, Elway, a mediocre QB for over a decade, has been a disaster as an NFL executive.  That's pretty easy to see if you don't have blinders on.

Stick to what you know Dan, 'cause it sure as hell ain't sports.  What's next?  Judging a QB based on how many Bible verses he has memorized?  Forget meaningful criteria like, you know, can he throw a damn football?

Dan Caplis is worried about unnecessary Hail Mary’s,and his opinion shouldn’t matter, but the facts DO matter about Tebow?  Very interesting coming from Dan, when he issuch a manipulator of facts.

Oh well. After all, he often doesn’t seem to show a hint of conscience or decencyas he broadcasts many kinds of  manipulation over the public airwaves on muchmore important issues.

OK, OK.  It wasa little amusing when Caplis minimized the antics of a naked jogging priest, who did laps around the school track in Frederick.  That fact-finding stalwart Dan made sure toemphasize that it was “pitch dark” dozens of times, when the fact remains thatthe priest would have jogged right through lighted neighborhoods past at leasta dozen homes, or though school parking lots during his jaunt back to therectory.  Oh, and he also seemed to liketo shave naked in front of boys at camp.

Not serious enough for you?

Only Dan can turn a reported four percent oftroubled priests into “99.999 percent” are great priests.  Only Dan can call about 700 priests removedfrom the ministry a “handful”.  Is theCatholic Church doing better now? Absolutely.  But how many sexassaults did Caplis just ignore and gloss over with that analysis of the “facts”?

Only Dan can proclaim in the past that he didn’tmind and woudn’t have complained if Boston’s Cardinal Law was prosecuted forcovering up and transferring priests accused of sex assault.  Now,  Dan’sotherwise excellent memory is hazy and he needs more information to comment, whenthe Vatican apparently came to Law’s defense. How convienent for Dan and his “facts”.

Only Dan can slant the facts and minimize priest sexabuse by his discusting comparison of a priest’s sex assault on a boy to awrestling match.  He did this whendescribing the sexual molestation of a northern Colorado boy by the convictedpriest, Timothy Evans, who abused and molested other boys just a few years ago.

But then Dan also says the so-called attack on theChurch in Colorado is only about a couple priests shuttled around to differentparishes not years ago, but decades ago? Nice selective facts by the arbiter of all right and good, Dan Caplis.

Only Dan can say in the wake of the Don Imus flap, that women should never be labeled sluts and whores.  OK, Dan gave himself a pass when he calledMadonna a whore, but he reaffirmed only days ago that he believes criminal lawsshould remain to prosecute those who call a woman’s sexual virtue intoquestion.  Uh, oh.  You see, Caplis labeled a CU football womantrainer “a willing participant” and she apparently “wanted it” when she wascoerced, grabbed and was scared when CU players asked her to perform a sex actwith a football recruit.

Only Dan can vigorouly defend Ken Buck during hissenate run for not prosecting a sex assault case where an intoxicated womansaid “no” to her attacker, when Caplis has always said that saying “no” meansrape in any circumstance, and sex with a sleeping spouse is criminal rape.  When did the facts change?

“Facts”, logic, and reasoned analysis by Caplis?  Laughable, pathetic, and ridiculous in manycases.  It is a shame that Dan’s moronicblind devotion often just further sullies the institutions, people, and even politicalcauses he’s ordained himself to protect, whether they are as important orunimportant as Tim Tebow.   Protecting Tebow with “facts”?  That’s what Dan should be calling another “unesessaryHail Mary”.  Just my opinion.

Dan Caplis is the star example of why the Broncos had to dump Tebow. Caplis could care less about football until this home schooled  Christain shows up.  Too many zealots were using Tebow to sell there religious views that it was too much of a distraction for the Broncos.. The Broncos are a professional football team, not the First Church of Tebowmania.

Wow anybody can right now. Did antbody watched the games this year ,it was terrible. At least five out of the 8 games were won in the last two minutes of the game. It had everybody sitiing on the edge of their seats with stomach cramps wondering if they are going to pull it out. That may be fun for a fan but not for  a player. The defense did not enjoy this, not winning that way. They were glad of the outcome but thats about it. To think that Tebow name should be mentioned in the same breath as Peyton is crazy. This is from a 49er's fan form Birmingham,Alabama living in Denver. So i should be upset that he didnt pick San Fran, but I love the game and i am excited for the city I live in.

Forget meaningless stats like: QB rating, Completion Percentage, Total yards, Total TD's, Regular Season record, Superbowl appearances etc etc etc. Tebow is a better QB because his interception/attempt ratio is better than Manning's...brilliant!

"He realizes that keeping interceptions down is more important than a flashier completion percentage"

Which why hey decides to fumble the ball all of the time instead.

LOL. Dan Caplis is a fool. This same "logic" and "reason" of his also led him to the republican party and catholicism. I suppose he thinks liberals and the devil are behind Peyton Manning signing with the Broncos.

I'm scratching my head - why waste cyber-ink spreading Caplis' righty views in Westword? What, you think he doesn't have enough exposure given his promnent role in the Republican Party and his own daily radio show?

Michael, I didn't ascertain whether your story was entirely based on Caplis' "show" yesterday, or if part of it was the result of a one on one with the conservative lunatic for hire.

If this was all off his program, great job of reporting his nonsensical and delusion filled diatribe..

If you were unfortunate to have had to actually interview this professional zealot, I'm sure you felt the need for a shower after being around him, much like a person would after driving by a Walmart.

And thanks for your sacrifice, if you did.

Christ, this guy's as nuts talking about sports as he is screeding, ranting, prosthelytizing, and spreading out right lies politically.

Dan Caplis is the breathing  definition of the term "skin crawling creepy".

Eric, I conducted an interview with Dan Caplis this morning. The quotes are from our conversation. Thanks for the post.
