Eric Janusz accused of sexually assaulting child while member of police force
Janusz has been formally accused of sexually assaulting a child during his decade-plus working as a GJ cop.
The arrest affidavit in the Janusz case remains sealed. However, the Grand Junction Police Department confirms that an investigation into Janusz's actions was initiated this past fall after a complaint from a woman who's now an adult -- although she wasn't during the time when she says Janusz committed crimes against her.
This period corresponds to the decade-plus, beginning in January 1996, when Janusz was a cop in the patrol division. In 2006, he was named the first winner of an award recognizing outstanding officers within the department. Then, later that year, he signed up with the Grand Junction Fire Department. He worked for the GJFD until this past February, at which point he left due to what's described as a workers' compensation separation unrelated to the sex assault investigation. He hurt himself on the job, reports the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, but he didn't return to work after using up all his comp time, so he was let go.
This decision followed a 2010 accusation that Janusz harassed his former wife and her boyfriend, who also worked as a firefighter. According to the Sentinel, Janusz "left a series of profane voicemails or text messages" with his ex, and allegedly told her new beau, against whom he filed a complaint with his supervisor, "If you ever try to keep my kids from me again, I'll have your ass.... Don't ever (expletive) talk to me at work about private matters."
In the end, the Mesa County District Attorney's Office decided not to pursue charges against Janusz, who agreed to undergo anger management sessions with a therapist.
Too soon to tell if something similar will happen this time as well -- but there's no question the accusations against him are extremely serious. He surrendered Friday on a warrant citing four counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, and another charge alleging that such acts constituted a pattern of abuse.
