Video: JaVale McGee doesn't want your game ball
Maybe JaVale McGee had a bad experience with a game ball he received previously. Maybe the Nuggets's big man saw a heckler in the stands he was trying to hit. Or more likely, there was something entirely different going on in the, uh, unique mind of McGee. Whatever the reason, he tossed his game ball into the stands after starring in the Nuggets playoff win over the Lakers on Tuesday night.
McGee tallied 21 points on nine of twelve shooting, as well as fourteen rebounds and two blocks, and helped hold off a late Lakers rally to send the series back here for Game 6 tonight. It was the second time in the series he helped negate some of the Lakers's substantial size advantage; he notched sixteen points and fifteen boards in a win last Friday.
But it was Tuesday night's season-saving effort, which featured McGee's normal array of freakish dunks, blocks and, yes, goal-tending, that earned McGee the game ball. McGee stood with his prize and talked to TNT's perpetually neon Craig Sager during the post-game interview and gave very bland answers.
But as we have learned, McGee never fails to deliver with the inexplicable comedy. Just before he entered the tunnel, McGee hurled the ball deep into the stands. Maybe it was the contrarian in McGee, as Sager had just told him to "hold on to that game ball."
McGee offered an explanation on his twitter account, which, of course, carries the name of his alter-ego, Pierre:
Had the game ball after the game and thru it up to moms and the fam in the stands... I tebowed it right on target lol— Pierre McGee (@JaValeMcGee34) May 9, 2012
This story is actually staggeringly accurate considering that "tebowed it right on target" often means to throw a ball in a hurried manner without thought and to no one in particular.
Short of pummeling NBA Commissioner David Stern in the face and earning a suspension for the rest of the playoffs, McGee can do whatever he wants with the game ball -- as long as he plays well enough to earn it.
