Miller moths cause fiery car crash in Colorado Springs

Colorado is under attack! By Miller moths! This earlier-than-usual invasion has inspired plenty of grumbling, as well as Melanie Asmar's list earlier this week of the top five alternative uses for the irritating little buggers. Note that Asmar didn't include anything about moths causing car crashes -- but that appears to be what happened yesterday.

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 7800 block of Lexington Drive at 8:37 p.m. last night after receiving a report of a single car accident -- and it was a hot one. The crash caused the vehicle, a 2004 GMC Denali, to leak gas and burst into flames that had to be extinguished by personnel from multiple fire engines.

The eighteen-year-old driver might have been barbecued had not passing motorists seen what was happening and pulled her to safety through the open driver's door window shortly before the Denali started burning. In the end, she sustained only minor injuries.

What caused the crack-up? Not drugs or alcohol, according to the cops. Instead, their report notes that the driver "was distracted by Miller moths and lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree."

No description of the moth or moths in question. But we have a feeling they looked a little something like this:
