I was a soldier on that mission. For OPSEC purposes I cannot say what days, but this was the hardest mission I have every had to do in my six years in the COARNG.
The choice of adjective in the headline here is disrespectful. Circus trains are "amazing." Skiers outrunning impending avalanches are "amazing." 53-day searches for the corpse of an infant are "exhaustive," or "meticulous," or "painstaking." They are not "amazing." There is nothing "amazing" about this story. Everything about this is painful and sad.
@Sarah You are right in your description on the devastating and heart wrenching work and caring from the heart that went into this search for this beautiful child that deserved life and so much more than he ended up with instead.
I believe that maybe they could have worded the headline in a more appropriate manner......but what everyone did to find that child WAS "AMAZING" and so very "LOVING".
Unfortunately he didn't get the love, caring and respect that he deserved from his mother - but he got all of that from everyone that spent the time to find him and put him to rest in a respectful and loving way.
I have so much respect and admiration for everyone that showed this little boy love. This is the only love he ever experienced, and it is due to all of you that helped him and gave him peace. XXXOOO.
