Aurora theater shooting & disgusting questions about The Dark Knight Rises box office

dark knight rises.jpg
The Dark Knight.
We understand that media outlets doing wall-to-wall coverage of last night's shooting at the Aurora Town Center Century 16 during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rise have to look at every possible angle of the story.

But excuse me for being repulsed by stories speculating about whether the bloodshed will hurt the movie's chances for a blockbuster opening weekend.

The statement issued by Dark Knight Rises studio Warner Bros. on behalf of the company and the filmmakers, including director Christopher Nolan, wisely avoids any reference to filthy lucre. It reads:

Warner Bros. and the filmmakers are deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time.

In recent hours, however, we're seeing more and more stories like the Fox News post "Could Colorado theater massacre hurt The Dark Knight Rises at the box office?" Among its bon mots: a comment from an industry source who thinks the flick may fall short of the $200 million mark for the weekend (oh no!), a reference to a stock-market dip for theater stocks (the horror!) and the suggestion that a post-rampage increase in security at movie complexes could lead to an increase in ticket prices (typical).

Such subjects have a certain legitimacy, I suppose, and there's no question an event of this magnitude may have an impact on pop culture. After the 1999 attack on Columbine High School, Marilyn Manson was pilloried because killers Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were supposedly fans, Buffy the Vampire Slayer delayed an episode that had a school-shooter theme, and so on.

But is it too much to ask that questions about the size of the mintThe Dark Knight Rises will generate over the next couple of days wait at least until the ten bodies currently in theater nine at the Aurora Century 16 are removed?

Apparently so.

More from our Aurora Theater Shooting archive: "Aurora theater shooting: 12 dead, 59 injured, chief won't address Joker rumors."

bassreason makes some very valid points aside from the thoughts for the "poor" producers of batman. its quite disturbing how politicians have been all too eager to use this massacre as a way to shove their agenda down the peoples throats.

It sucks. It just plain sucks that some asshole stole and destroyed the lives of so many individuals in a manner that's hard to really imagine if you weren't there. Now imagine if you will the thousands of man hours and dreams that went in to producing this film and how fearful everyone from that side must be that this tragedy could be a precursor of more to come. The suggestion that the makers of this film should somehow be penalized or stop showing it is ridiculous and only encourages fear in the hearts of all of us collectively. Are we now going to allow ourselves to be subjected to overzealous searches at the movie theatre too, all in the name of homeland security? This guy was a nut job among many other nut jobs out there. This is not normal human behavior and to do anything other than to mourn the loss of life is to accept death as a way of living.

Perhaps you can arrange a benefit in their behalf.

How will they survive w/o a 1/2 a billion dollar,

box office opening weekend ???

They're the TRUE victims !!!

Kinda playing the holier than thou card here aren't you? I get your point, but the question over profits harkens to the fact that people are scared shitless about random acts of violence happening to them. This shooting is likely going to be on the minds of everyone who goes -- or thinks about going -- and sees the Dark Knight Rises, and for that reason many will just stay home. This sick, whiny little bitch who shot up the theater is a terrorist and terrorists love to hit us in the pocketbook. The monetary impact this shooting will have is a valid question now, and it will be tomorrow. We can't and shouldn't just sit around and wring our hands about those poor souls who were killed in a senseless tragedy.

This story is a total joke.  In a self-righteous way, the author (Michael Roberts) self aggrandizes and somehow excludes himself from the "other" people exploiting the situation.  It's embarrassing and as shameful as Fox or anyone he calls out. He just regurgitated the same crap and pointed fingers.  If you have such convictions, delete the story Michael. Or at least "wait at least until the ten bodies currently in theater nine at the Aurora Century 16 are removed".

Sez the pimp who's posted such pithy auxiliary stories as The Tweets of Hollywood Twats and other equally vapid inanities.

The venal focus of U$ culture shouldn't surprise anyone who's even been semi-conscious these last 15 years or so.

It wasn't 48 hours after the 9.11 Tragedy, the body parts still warm in the morgue,  that Media Pundits were speculating how it would affect Wall Street and the U$ Economy, urging clueless consumerist sheeple to continue spending $$$ ... in the name of "patriotism" ...

... now a word from our sponsors.

 @Brainleakage

What's your take on America's most notorious terrorists ?

G.bush, G.Bush jr, Larry Silverstein, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and the ENTIRE FOX News Network ?

Holmes hasn't done nearly the carnage as the aforementioned .

Jesus-Fucking-Christ, should LEAD this list !!!
