I believe this is the mug shot taken at the Arapaho County Jail on 20 July 1730 hrs and not the Aurora City Police mug shot taken early in the morning on 20 July? I'm speculating that the Aurora City Police mug shot would show him having make up as the Joker and why the Chief of police didn't want to release it?

The only thing the police ever confirmed that James Holmes was wearing when arrested was a swat uniform and gas mask.  On the 20th when the Aurora chief of Police was asked if the suspect had been wearing makeup at the time of arrest he said he that he hadn't been to his knowledge and the police have not since said that he was wearing anything other than the above and that his hair was dyed red.  I think the media has taken the "Joker" thing and run with it when all they've said is that he had red hair and they believe styled his killing after the type of mass killings the Joker committed in the comics.  And of course they would have probably stripped him of the mask and swat uniform on scene... he was a homicidal maniac, so who knows what kind of weapons or other items he could have had on him.

HipTip -- they don't take "mug shots" with  costume makeup, or masks, or sunglasses, or wigs or hats.

Mug shots are for FUTURE identification purposes, not evidence photos of the current crime.

Give the newbies a break, bud.

School them my friend.

They might be FINALLY coming over from the Post.

Let's not 'scare' them all off just quite yet...

You're right, I should have cited the OED first.

mug shot

n.

orig. U.S.

a photograph of a person's face, esp. in police or other official records (cf. sense 1c).

Even according to a bunch of limey Brits, you FAIL.

Only a clueless newbie would cite merriam-webster.

Call them whatever special made up name you want. Those are clearly booking photos taken after arrests (homeboy in the cow outfit is especially clear on that one) -- which ANYONE with any knowledge of police/law enforcement/lawyer/media speak would alternately (and accurately) describe as "mug shots".

Now, if you want to get technical with semantics (which you clearly do) - there is NO SUCH THING in the legal system as a "mug shot". The term is a colloquialism for a wide range of legal photographs of people including (drumroll): POLICE ARREST AND BOOKING PHOTOS!

You don't have to take my word for it, though:

HipTip -- those would be forensic evidentiary photos.

"Mug Shots", like Driver License Photos, are for future identification purposes.
