Michel Martin tries to cover for his son in crash that killed Shun Jones, Amanda Omo-Iyamu?
That's because his sixteen-year-old son, not him, is thought to have been behind the wheel of a truck-tractor that got into a crash that killed two Texas women, Shun Jones and Amanda Omo-Iyamu.
The Colorado State Patrol has named Martin's son, and plenty of news agencies have used his moniker. But because the sixteen year old has not been charged as an adult at this writing, we're leaving his handle out.
According to the CSP, the crash took place at 6:28 a.m. on Saturday morning near Limon. At that time, a 2003 Volvo truck-tractor towing a loaded horse trailer was heading west on Interstate 70 near mile marker 363 when it drifted onto the westbound shoulder of the road.
Shun Jones and Amanda Omo-lyamu.
Where, unfortunately, Jones, a 48 year old from Carrolton, Texas, and Omo-Iyamu, her 38-year-old cousin from Balch Springs, were changing a flat tire on their 2007 Pontiac Vibe. The pair, who were reportedly in Colorado to celebrate the birthday of a family member, as well as their own, both died as a result of their injuries. Only Lamarcus Lockett, Shun's eighteen-year-old son, who was in the back of the Vibe at the time of the collision, survived the ordeal.
Following the crash, the truck-tractor, occupied by Michel and his son, both from Sulphur, Louisiana, stopped about half a mile away, the CSP notes. Shortly thereafter, the teenager was spirited away by what the state patrol describes as "a private party" -- and Michel told officers who responded to the scene that he'd been behind the wheel.
After further investigation, officers concluded that Michel had actually been the passenger, while his son drove. Hence, the younger Martin, who later surrendered to law enforcement, is the one facing two counts of failing to remain at the scene after an accident and two counts of careless driving causing death. But Michel's also been charged...with one count of false reporting. Neither alcohol nor drugs are thought to have been factors in this tragic incident.
