Drunk driving: How much does it cost to get a first DUI in Colorado?

Getting a DUI is expensive. Dan Beeck, who owns one of Colorado's biggest private probation companies, had that in mind when he started providing often-required alcohol education classes and therapy for cut-rate prices. But as explained in our cover story, "Blow Back," not everyone was thrilled with his plan. Some of the alcohol counselors who'd been providing that treatment for years balked at Beeck's low prices and what they say is a conflict of interest.

So how expensive is it to get a DUI? Westword has put together a handy infographic of the costs associated with getting caught driving drunk for the first time, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation and the state Persistent Drunk Driver Committee.

See the infographic below or click to view a bigger version. It's, ahem, sobering.

About as much as it costs to get away with murder. Fuck off Josh and thank you Drew My friend had a convicted felon sending him pics of himself holding an Uzi and the pigs did nothing but lets go shoot fish in a barrel and let real crimes go

Remember back in the 80's when the slogan was  "don't drive drunk"? Now it's "Don't drink and drive" and I think that says a lot about what's happened with DUI laws in the last 30 years. Much like the war on drugs, the war on drunk driving has given our law enforcement officer's the opportunity to further encroach in our day to day lives. Considering over 90% of people who get a dui didn't hurt anyone or damage any property, the majority of drunk drivers are  being  punished for what could have happened. Almost a pre-crime.

Also consider that with DUI laws, we have abandoned the constitutional right against self-incrimination, and many states have abandoned even having to prove some form of impairment before  requiring a breathalyzer or a blood test. And  don't even get me started on "per-se" dui laws and dui checkpoints...

Another thing that bothers me is the lack of sound science when it comes to dui laws, alcohol breathalyzers would hardly be considered a accurate device. And statistically, most alcohol based auto accidents occur with a blood alcohol content rating of 1.5, so why do we have the limit set at .08? And agitators want it to be .05, which would effectively eliminate the thought of responsible adults have 2 glasses of wine with dining out.

And boy has a large industry cropped up in the last decades serving the "dui industry": alcohol counselors, outsourced probation depts, and breath/urine testing facilities just to name a few..

The sad part is it doesn't work as a deterent. You just get a great government revenue generator and uninsured, unlicensed drunks on the road.

When it was all said and done, my lone DUI in Arapahoe county, cost me better than $10,000 !

In all actuality, I'm STILL paying for it in other ways, even though I quit drinking and have remained sober since shortly after the arrest.

I failed to mention the D.U.I. took place in 2007.

@coloradommjpatient its a little excessive for sure. but youd be suprised how even the level of detterent they put forth now doesn't seem to affect the people who just cant stop drinking and driving. I have 2 DUIS, and have now quit drinking and am on serious probation.

The thing I remind myself of when I have to deal w/ all the systematic bullshit, is that over 100 people die in DUI related accidents every year in this state. That is pretty extreme isnt it?
