The description of the crime scene and the suspect in the death of ninety-year-old Kenneth "Bud" Elmgreen are, to put it mildly, strange.

But Jefferson County Sheriff's Office representatives believe the case adds up to murder -- and the person they've arrested is Elmgreen's 53-year-old son and namesake.

According to the JCSO, deputies were called to a residence on the 3800 block of Ridge Road at around noon this past Friday in search of what's described as "an adult male who had an active warrant for his arrest." That person turned out to be (update) Kenneth James Elmgreen, who sheriff's office spokesperson Jacki Kelley says was wanted for failure to appear on a fraud charge.

Upon their arrival at the address in question, the deputies looked through a window into the home and saw drops of blood on the floor. Then the younger Elmgreen appeared, sporting lacerations to his arms and legs.

The man said these wounds were self-inflicted. Does that mean they were indicative of a suicide attempt? According to Kelley, she can't answer the question at this stage of the investigation, but she stresses that there were multiple lacerations requiring several days of hospitalization to address.

When speaking with deputies, Elmgreen also divulged that his father was dead inside the house -- something deputies were able to confirm when they found Bud's body in a nearby bedroom.

At this point, no cause of death has been determined pending results of an autopsy that's slated to take place today. But even without a definitive opinion, Elmgreen was busted on Monday on suspicion of first-degree murder. He's currently being held without bond.

Here's a larger look at Kenneth James Elmgreen's booking photo.

I have known Bud and family for 40 years. My husband worked at Colo.Pub. Serv. with him in the 70's. We were great friends and his deceased wife Ev and I were like Mother and daughter. I can only guess why Ken did this but you would have to agree something not right going on in his mind.I feel a great sorrow for Ken he had given his life to helping Bud and keeping him in the home.and knowing he was going to jail maybe he was trying to protect Bud from knowing this and being put in a nursing home or worse. I certainly don't condone it but that will be for someone smarter than I to decide. I would like to be contacted by some of the family to discuss more about what happened. Bud meant a lot to my mother Kathy  Elmgreen Melson.  This would truly sadden her.  May he rest in peace and be rejoined with his loving daughter in heaven.

Bud Elmgreen was a good man. I had the pleasure of getting to know him and I wish I could have been able to see him one more time to let him know. I am sad that this happened.

He wasn't shot.  I'm not sure what exactly happened since the investigation is still ongoing but he wasn't shot.  This is part of why I'm constantly searching the news on this . . . because I have a feeling I'll hear from the news faster than I'll hear from the folks doing the investigation.

I'm serious.  Bud was my father's stepfather and he's the man I grew up calling grandpa.  He was the kind of person who sent me a valentine's day card every year with a dollar bill in it telling me to buy something sweet for myself.

Dear Deidre, Bud was a dear person and I send my deepest condolences as well. My prayers go out to you, family and friends. Sincerely, Krista Baker
