Why? Because it is all frightening, and presidential campaigns against an incumbent president have always been based on fear. But does any of this hold up? Flawed logic 1 Elder conservatives, most of whom are on Medicare and collecting Social Security checks, both of which are born of socialist policies, complain that the president is a socialist, espouse the axiom of, “Keep the government out of my home,” neglecting to say out loud “that is except when it is delivering its socialist checks or paying for my hospital visits.” Flawed logic 2 Many of those who want the government to stop spending billions fighting foreign wars and spend the money in this country to strengthen the economy also rail against the president for wanting to cut the defense budget. But it is only logical that once you begin to wind down the wars, as the president has done in both Iraq and Afghanistan, what economic good would it be if he continued to budget the same amount of money for defense? If, when you dial down the wars in order to cut down on how much money you spend on them, how do you spend the money at home unless you first cut the defense budget? Flawed logic 3 Disgruntled Republicans say the Democrats have declared Obamacare to be constitutional when it is not. But a political party doesn’t decide what is constitutional. That is the job of the Supreme Court, and in this case the justice who was the swing vote on the constitutionality of the new health care law was appointed by a Republican President and is a known conservative. Flawed logic 4 The new right says it is unconscionable to deny marriage to a couple because they are black but it is just fine to do the same thing because the couple is the same sex. They are against abortion and against providing contraception. Flawed logic 5 They complain that the unemployment rate is too high, but the radical conservative tea party posts on its website a letter by conservative activist, Melissa Brookstone asking small business owners to refrain from hiring anyone until they get their way in the upcoming election. This reminds me of Richard Nixon saying he had a plan to end the war in Vietnam but he wouldn’t tell anyone unless the country re-elected him. Between the campaign and the election another 5,000 soldiers died in Vietnam. Flawed logic 6 Radical Republican tea partiers say they are tired of the status quo and want the government to make a real difference in how the country is run. Then in early 2011 they hold a summit in Phoenix Arizona. They poll the 1,600 people attending the meeting regarding their preference for a 2012 presidential candidate and Herman Cain won with 22%. Runners up were Tim Pawlenty (16%), Ron Paul (15%) and Sarah Palin (10%). And that has nothing to do with reality. If you want to listen to the bumper sticker logic, and sadly cast your vote based on this unsubstantiated nonsense, please remember that you are most likely jumping into line with all those people Twain was talking about, and the saddest think for all of you, unless you are a millionaire, would be if your vote helped Mitt Romney win. www.johnhourihan.wordpress.com
