PETA: Encourage nonviolence by putting James Holmes on vegetarian diet

James Holmes.
In the wake of the Aurora theater shooting, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals canceled a Denver protest in deference to the victims. But now, PETA has made the tragedy the centerpiece of a new PR blitz. The organization has written a letter to the Arapahoe County Sheriff Office (see it below) asking that accused killer James Holmes be put on a vegetarian diet as a way of making the world a less violent place.

"As debates over gun control and mental-health care sweep the nation in the wake of the July 20 shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., PETA is urging everyone to take the first step toward making the world less violent simply by choosing meat-free meals," states a just-issued release from the organization. "To initiate this positive trend, PETA has sent a letter to Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson urging him to place James Holmes -- who has been charged in the shooting deaths of 12 people and the wounding of 58 others -- on an all-vegetarian diet for the remainder of his stay at the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office Detention Facility in Centennial."

Of course, PETA specializes in publicity stunts. Note the canceled event mentioned above -- "All Animals Have the Same Body Parts," planned to coincide with the annual Cattle Industry Summer Conference -- would have involved members of the group wearing only "paint markings that mimic a butcher's diagram."

When PETA pulled the plug on this display, our Patricia Calhoun praised the organization for making a "smart move," since "victims of the shootings are lying in hospital beds across the city, with holes in their body parts."

That's still the case: A number of people injured in the massacre remain in hospitalized as we approach the three-week mark since the attack. But apparently, PETA feels it's waited long enough

"There are many forms of random, senseless violence that we can do nothing about -- but each of us can help stop the routine slaughter of animals simply by not eating them," says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk in a statement. "PETA is asking Sheriff Robinson to lead the way by placing James Holmes on a humane and cost-effective vegetarian diet, which will save lives and public funds."

Oh yeah: PETA has offered to provide not just Holmes but all Arapahoe County inmates with vegetarian meals at no cost to taxpayers. For one day.

Here's the full letter to Robinson:

August 8, 2012 Sheriff Grayson Robinson Arapahoe County Via e-mail: grobinson@co.arapahoe.co.us Dear Sheriff Robinson, On behalf of PETA's more than 3 million members and supporters--including thousands across Colorado who were horrified by the carnage in Aurora--I am writing about suspected murderer James Holmes. With all due respect, we ask that you help make the world a less violent place by providing him with exclusively vegetarian meals while he is in your custody. The senseless killings that Holmes is charged with carrying out have caused many of us to debate how gun control and mental-health care might help prevent future outbreaks of such violence. Although many acts of random and senseless violence occur that we can do nothing about, all of us can help stop the routine slaughter of animals--all we have to do is stop eating them. On factory farms, living, feeling beings--who experience pain and fear just as we do--are regularly castrated, debeaked, and dehorned without painkillers. They are transported to slaughterhouses in all weather extremes, with many collapsing from heat exhaustion in hot weather and some freezing to the sides of the trucks in cold weather. At the slaughterhouse, they are hung upside down, and their throats are slit, often while they are still conscious. Nonviolence can start on our plates. There are other benefits, too: Vegetarian meals are easy to prepare and typically less expensive than meat-based meals. We would be happy to help you set up institutional meat-free meal plans and also to give, at no cost to Arapahoe County, vegetarian meals to all your inmates on a day of your choosing. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you. Very truly yours, Ingrid E. Newkirk President PETA

No, this might actually work! It's true that vegetarians are less violent, just like atheism promotes proper dental health and biggotry keenly develops your sense of X-Ray hearing.

I Believe these people need to stop using the Tragety that happend in my state as a way to push an agenda all i have heard is non violence, gun control, mental health care THE GUY WAS FUCKING CRAZY HE WANTED TO HURT PEOPLE  i dont think a vegetarian diet makes you less crazy! WTF people using shit like this to push corporate agenda is bullshit. How about a new fund to hlep the familys of victims from one of these corporations.... that might be a little more useful than spending millions to push agendas!

You really can't get mad when no one that works for Westword is a real journalist. That's why they work for Westword.

WESTWORD--If anyone is exploring this tragedy, it's your newspaper. How many posts do there need to be for you guys to stop posting these bullshit stories?!? Obviously you don't give a damn about your readers who have been loudly stating for months that we want this coverage to STOP. Find something else to cover. This is infuriating and ridiculous.

Stop it Westword. Stop with the James Holmes articles. Stick to the facts if you want to write about him. You are insulting your readers by publishing this filth. I like you and I like what PETA stands for too, but I've been patient with you long enough. You write more about the killer than I've seen about the survivors. Why not be a positive force in the community Westword? Why not find some charitable events to help the survivors and PROMOTE them!?!? You don't even have to look that hard! I can help! I have friends and family grieving from many devastating losses this summer. Use your power for good, not evil. Please, it's the right and honorable thing to do. Save the smut for the tabloids. Help us help our fellow Coloradans. Would love to see a response from Westword to our posts in this feed.

You mean like you? Exploiting a tragedy? Used to get your paper every week to find out what was going on. Haven't picked one up in months and probably will quit following you on here. I don't know who in leadership thinks this is a good idea, but it's not.

Why don't you focus on solutions ? Interview people with ways to educate how to spot signs of depression? Maybe if the Broncos left people there would get their heads out of their asses and show some compassion towards each other .

On the contrary: I suspect that Mr. Holmes' behavioral problems stem in part from a serious bacon deficiency.

This is so ridiculous it's actually funny! I suppose it never occurred to PETA that one of the most brutal dictators in history (Adolph Hitler) who was responsible for the deaths of roughly 30 million people, was not only a vegetarian, but pretty much vegan! So, uh, yeah, eating a vegetarian diet really does make you non-violent. :P

Every member of PETA should be arrested and tried as a domestic terrorist. Letting zoo animals out of there cages & stealing seeing eye dogs from blind people does nothing for animals rights, it puts innocent people AND animals unnecessarily in a life threatening situation.

This is so bad it's funny. "We know we can't do anything about shootings, but let's make the world a less violent place! For animals.

HipTip -- Adolph was ELECTED by the Voters of Democratic Germany.

Extra Credit -- Many of the most brutal, murderous, actual Dictators in the last century were installed, supported or assisted by the U$A.

From http://www.foodrevolution.org/askjohn/47.htm - Robert Payne is widely considered to be Hitler’s definitive biographer. In his book, Hitler: The Life and Death of Adolph Hitler, Payne says that Hitler’s “vegetarianism” was a “legend” and a “fiction” invented by Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi Minister of Propaganda. According to Payne:

“Hitler’s asceticism played an important part in the image he projected over Germany. According to the widely believed legend, he neither smoked nor drank, nor did he eat meat or have anything to do with women. Only the first was true. He drank beer and diluted wine frequently, had a special fondness for Bavarian sausages and kept a mistress, Eva Braun… His asceticism was fiction invented by Goebbels to emphasize his total dedication, his self-control, the distance that separated him from other men. By this outward show of asceticism, he could claim that he was dedicated to the service of his people. In fact he was remarkably self-indulgent and possessed none of the instincts of the ascetic.”

Do a little research next time, and give ignorance a break.

Violence begets violence, and PETA is just trying to draw attention to the widely ignored and horrific conditions that animals on factory farms are subjected to.Thanks, Westword, for reporting.-Alexa

@dcissell Guess what?  There are some members of PETA who don't do anything like that.  They just sit back and send in their yearly dues and wait for people to realize the truth.

Every person who didn't pass 3rd grade grammar class should be arrested and imprisoned for destroying the landscape of this country :)

@Alexa No matter what Hitler did, PETA is still full-blown retarded.  They'd probably have more followers and supporters of their cause if they weren't so retarded, but they don't and they are.
