Reader: I gave Denver a try for two months, but it sucks

denver photo small.JPG
Around here, we do a lot of celebrating the Mile High City in posts like the 50 reasons we're glad we live in Denver and not the United States. But we've also provided this January 2011 Comment of the Day for people who disagree.

Like this guy, who's spent two months here and can't wait to get out.

greylopht writes:

I do have to say, yes Denver does suck. I have been here since 7/6/12 and guess what. Here it is 9/3/12 and I am ready to bolt. As soon as my contract is done it is a hop to Austin to see my Grams and fix my moms truck, then it is off to Bishop CA to get more stuff and then off to Portland. I am from CA (Mendocino) and have to say that the dope smokers here are far worse than anything in the emerald triangle. Let me recount the things that have happened since I have been here.

Roommates 21 year old F to M party girl but want to be a guy pushed my Geriatric 3 legged dog down a flight of stairs. Once I had the house owners place all cleaned up, 3 other folks moved in (as well as party girl) and all they want to do is party, smoke pot, drink and sleep all day. I was the black sheep that wanted to keep the house cleaned up so I was shoved out once everyone else moved in.

Got rear ended in a hit and run on Westminster in Arvada. Old guy in a 09 Accord, blew his front end off and he still drove away. While I have been here at Motel 6, my car has been backed into on the left side pushing the strut in and bending a wheel, lower control arm and a radius rod. (Currently waiting on parts, I drive a 32 year old French Peugeot so parts are scarce). The drivers are rubbish and I have lived in. London, Berlin, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Petaluma, Freemont, Atlanta, Augusta, Kansas City, Knoxville, El Paso/Las Cruces and even Seattle for a time. The roads here are really -- worse -- than Kansas City, and that is saying something.

There is 0 culture here, and folks are right about the want to be out doors folks. Their version of out doors is visiting a strip mall, but they dress all REI for it. There has been some good food, but over priced. Food is over priced, rents are insanity for the job market. People have there nose in the air really badly. The job market is full of head hunters that take half of your contract pay OR MORE. (I speak from experience) There are shootings here all the time, folks seem to be rather wing nut combative or clueless. This is a very Frat Boy/Girl centric city. People are rather closed minded but try to put on the façade of open mindedness. I have met a couple of really nice folks, but they are few and far between.

Extremely consumer oriented. Strip mall on every corner with the same stuff as every strip mall, there is not much to really DO. Want to go hiking, deal with the throngs of people then. No where is it pedestrian friendly for walking places, (not to mention the drivers) It is very Yuppified and tries to be all in the now, when it is really stuck somewhere in the 90's and is about as fake as a city as a city can be.

I really wanted to love Denver and come here for a new beginning. So far it has done nothing but cost me money and patience. Did I mention exorbitant prices like everyone makes 100K a year.

I can say working with the Police and the other Agencies I have worked with has been a VERY pleasant experience for the most part. (I am a trainer) but other than that, sorry, Denver is a soul and money sucking place.

OK I've been living here for over 20 years. But since the first day here I noticed something wrong. First of all, Denver is one mile above sea level. The oxygen is thin and it has an adverse effect on the minds within the population. You will notice it after a conversation with a "local". Then you will have the rude drivers, nose high attitudes, fake personalities, people who judge you and think they are better than you, absence of a "teamwork" attitude, "clicks" that exist with the same motives within the minds of a group, "I don't care" attitudes, and people that use their "brokeness" as an excuse to carry on the way they do. Even my van runs worse in Denver than away up into the mountains. Something about being one mile in the air is not good. Go ahead and laugh, it's true. Now I'm not judging these people,  I have been involved in situations and received the above first hand. Living here has been the worst experience in my life... everyday.  But I am stuck here. I have a house here and until it's paid off I will have to endure the bronco idol worshipping population, rude drivers, "clicks", judge and jury, noses, dreamers, and "I don't care about you" execution style "don't forget to punch your timecard"...neighbors. But hey, I still love them. What they do they not know and it's ok. I am fully aware of what's going on and I prepare for it. It's not a healthy thing for me but I endure it. Always gonna be that one that will step up and say "Denver is not for everybody". Ok then, what you are really saying is "this is how this place is and if you don't like it go back to California". Seen that bumper sticker too. All on one label driving down the road.. "Welcome to Colorado, now go home" Now that's some spunk...give me a coffee filter and call it good. I try to avoid driving around the drivers with the "local" sticker on the back. Now I have met...some... nice people here too. You'll never get a warmer welcome anywhere than the Little Caesars down the street. Now if everyone could see the love in that we'd all be saying "Let's all move to Denver !!" It seems the people that are the most polite are like the attendant at the gas station where you exchange two words with. I'm ready for tomorrow Denver !!! Bring it on !!!

people in denver are so ignorant.  also they are unsafe drivers.  also they let there dogs of the leash every where and don't pick up after there dogs.  So what were you step.  also you can never be charge with a DUI in colorado, and get high.  so who in the hell would wanna live at ground zero of a party city.  Hit and runs everyday.  This is why denver, and colorado just plain SUCK!

I came across this article after a Google search on Denver Sucks- because it does. Horrible traffic and unfriendly people who spend every waking hour of every day obsessing over a stupid football team. There are more important things in the world than the Donkeys (who went 4-12 the last year I lived in Denver, yet people still made a big deal over them). I lived in Denver for three years. The best day was the last.

I've been here since I was born, 1971, 5 generations - I cannot stand this place anymore. I grew up in North Denver or what is now called 'HiLo' whatever - just apple elitists now, people in this town are rude, snobby and just miserable.  I don't know when the aholes moved in but we are on our way out in six months and I won't miss this place at all!  We visited Seattle a few months ago and we heard people mention the Seattle Freeze before we went, meaning mean people.  Everyone was so nice and friendly so where that came from I don't know but if they think that then Denver is the ice age.  awful rotten people here.  good riddance.

See how bored Denver people are?  Someone writes an article complaining about Denver and the whole bunch of rednecks round up their myopic little cliques to get online and start bashing him for something to do on a Saturday night after the weed runs out.

It sounds like you had a nasty experience but I promise you, we're not all like that.  I hope you have found happiness wherever you are now.

I couldn't agree more, but not for the same reasons. I have lived here for 7 years now and unfortunately bought a home that has greatly depreciated in value, maybe because Denver is a criminal friendly town. When your car or home gets broken into, the police don't come out and take a report, you file the report online. If you take a tenant to court because the didn't pay rent and trashed your house and admitted to doing so and made up lies to tell the judge. Your SOL!

Oh, lets not forget about the tailgaters, people follow you SO close you can't see their license plate in your rear view mirror. And you going the speed limit. Today I was turning right on a green light and a guy was turning left on a yield green (coming from the opposite direction) and he had the nerve to honk at me and flip me off. Moron, I have the right of way. Way to many of these people text and drive too.

Then there are dog laws. Denver claims to be "Dog Freindly" but you can get a ticket and jail time if your dog barks or your neighbor just feels like complaining. And don't get me started on Breed specific legislation. They will confiscate your dog if it is a specific breed and can kill it, even if it is a service dog. You take them to court and they say, "no harm done, you lose, but thank you for your service to our country."

Okay the gun law is great, and I really like the make my day law, thats where you can shoot someone in your house, as long as it's not in the back. Pot smoking is legal, but not in public or outside, it can only be done in the privacy of your own home, that way you can get your kids contact high.

I can get tickets for weeds in my yard but the city can have a huge field full of weeds across the street from my house.

Trash and recycling are paid by our taxes, so we don't get a bill, but they dump half the garbage from the can and don't bother to pick it up.

Not a liberal and I don't smoke dope, you take your chances if I own a gun or not. But I still hate Denver and I have lived in SF, and Seattle.

I too , have bolted for Portland from Denver more than once . Both cities are similar in size , only Portland doesn't just pretend to be liberal as most Denverite-Wanna'-Be , Liberals ...

This malcontent lists 13 cities he's lived in not counting Denver or his hometown, therefore it appears that he has attachment issues and likely writes one of these letters every quarter trashing another unlucky town before moving on. He can't string a sentence together worth a crap despite claiming he's a "trainer", most likely he uses small words in his job such as sit, heel, good dog, etc. He claims Denverites have their noses in the air, yet his next destination is in the Pacific Northwest?? Good luck with that one.

Well, it's a city.  We got strip malls AND neighborhoods AND downtown stuff.  Strip malls are easy enough to avoid if they make you sick.

Sounds like the job was shit and didn't pay enough to avoid young roomies, car trouble and "expensive" stuff.  The job will make or break your experience in any place.  That's not Denver's problem.

What do I think? He sounds like a pretentious whiner. Any city had rows and rows of strip malls in the suburbs. As "worldly" as he claims to be, apparently he missed out on that. Also he lives at a Motel 6...who's to say that the people hitting his car aren't from out of town?As in any town the drivers usually suck but they are pretty nice here compared to where I'm from (Omaha, NE). I was back in Omaha in May and was repeatedly cut off in traffic. I can't remember when I was last cut off here. And people actually let you merge into traffic here. Maybe this guy should go live in Omaha and then realize how much a town can really suck.

Not to mention, the incidences he describes have nothing to do with Colorado... Just four or five bad people he has run in to. If work is great, then maybe he should live with some of those people and not a bunch of young adults in Denver. Of course they're rowdy! Any group of people who can't afford to live with just one person and needs to live with four tend to be people who don't make a lot of money and tend to party. Find a smaller place with one other person.

Well, considering this person cannot write, spell, or formulate his sentences completely or with intellectual thoughts... maybe he's the problem; Not Denver! And Denver isn't Westminster. I can't stand Westminster, but I love Denver, Parker, Aurora, Highlands Ranch, Boulder, Ft. Collins, etc. And not a lot to do here? Um, there is tons to do in Colorado. There are so many cool places to view art for FREE, museums, the Zoo, Volleyball at Wash Park, Old movies at the Esquire, Film On The Rocks(at Red Rocks), Rockies games, the mountains and wild life here. It sounds like this guy just didn't get out much or try to find various things to do.

my guess is he prob doesn't ski or snowboard. Go back to flatland and other boring crap. You could always try living in Detroit or Buffalo, NY....the nations 2 poorest cities respectively. There's a reason why it's expensive.....because people are moving here and want to move here. Stupid Texas hick.

Denver's not for everyone, and it takes a little getting used to, so I can't expect everybody to like it. But this guy's not going to be happy anywhere he goes. He's blaming the city for his poor attitude and subsequent experiences. Sitting in a Motel 6 waiting for parts for your Peugeot would blow wherever you are, but it's not Denver's fault. I think he brought a lot of this on himself. Someone that can't find anything to do in Colorado in the summer will hopefully translate into one less person clogging up our roads.

I moved here almost two years ago, and I absolutely love this city. You need to give it more than three months. Plus, I agree with everyone else that is wondering how he picked his roommate. I know very few people who would kick an ill dog down the stairs. He just needs to make wiser choices about who he surrounds himself with.

What kind of a self loathing morAn drives a Peugeot? Once I read that, anything else he had to say was just delusion rantings filtered through a sick mind. You have to be mentally defective to drive a 30 year old Peugeot as your primary car. No wonder your time sucked in Denver, you have no common sense.

Don't blame your bad luck and bad karma on our city. What "distinguished" world traveling young dude, rooms with fucking college teens? College teens I obviously presume, since those are the only fucks who do that shit, partying day an night, solely, and you, being such a world traveling stuck up, rents a room with people like that. This man is obviously in his twenties, early twenties I bet, because you can tell he thinks he's a great person, by trying to write nice, and well spoken, and mostly of himself, but no one of maturity writes like that, like a pompous, contrived, snob bitch, showcasing his "cool" under the disguise of "Colorado sucks"...As we all know, teenagers and twenty somethings don't know two shits and a fuck about life. And fuck your car. Noone cares how "cool" your 1970's fuckin clown car, is...And, AND, since dude is from Cali, Colorado has had a NO VACANCY sign towards towards the west, California for the most part, since the nineties...GTFO! :) Natives only!!!!!

I wonder how much of this he attracted. If you don't want to live with partiers, room with people who are older than 21. Did he interview the potential roommate? Seems this stuff could have happened in any city. This city is bike/pedestrian/bus friendly, my boyfriend does not have a car and gets around with ease. I think there's more to this.
