Video: Romney campaign volunteer claims to work for county clerk in clip going viral

Videos below.
The young woman seen outside a Colorado Springs Safeway in a video going viral (see it below) is up-front with the person capturing footage of her: She's interested in registering voters who'll mark their ballot for Mitt Romney. Problem is, she subsequently claims to be in the employ of the county clerk's office. That would be a jumbo violation of campaign rules if true -- which it's not.

The exchange in the clip, posted by a Youtube user who goes by the name golddiggermom, goes something like this:

"I am polling people," says the young woman. "Would you vote for Romney or Obama?"

"I thought you were registering voters a minute ago," responds the person recording the clip.

"I am, I am," the young woman insists.

"And who are you registering for?" the videographer asks. "All parties?"

"I'm actually trying to register voters for a particular party," the young woman says. "We're out here in support of Romney, actually."

"And who's paying you for this?" asks the camera-person.

"Let's see." The young woman struggles for a moment before replying, "We're working for the county clerk's office."

At this point, her inquisitor goes into full scolding mode, telling the young woman she can't only register voters of one party, and again asking if she works for the county clerk -- questions that prompt the young woman to raise her hand and block the camera.

It's certainly a grabby piece of footage -- but it's not an indication of corruption on the part of El Paso County, where Colorado Springs is located. A county spokesperson confirms to 9News that the young woman isn't an employee, as if that's necessary. Anyone who sees the footage can guess she's actually a Romney campaign volunteer who got flustered and misidentified herself.

Not that this excuses her assorted gaffes. As the person who posted the video correctly states, volunteers for assorted campaigns can't refuse to register someone interested in voting against their guy...and just because such actions likely occur on both sides doesn't excuse them.

At the same time, though, a Romney campers' dismissal of the video via a claim to 9News that the person who shot it is a well-known pro-Obama activist is equally specious. Golddiggermom's video archive contains only one other clip, and it's entirely apolitical -- it's called "Sleepy Sledding." But even if she specialized in liberal propaganda, she's right to have questioned the claims of this clearly befuddled young Mitt proponent.

Here's the video, followed by the 9News report.

@Chrissy what has Obama done for marijuana reform other than flip flop on how he would treat states with MMJ?

Tyler- 1. It's clique, not click. 2. I find it kind of funny that you are bigoted against Obama considering that he has YOUR interest at heart what with all the pictures of marijuana and your bi-racial children on Facebook. I bet you won't be singing your same tune if Romney wins and your pro-pot agenda gets shut down and/or you end up in jail because you don't quit after he repeals the laws for medical use.

Funny really, watching people argue which lying sack of dung is best. I wouldn't shake hands with either one of them.

In my opinion the offended "customer", now known to be just another political KoolAid guzzler, came across as a real bitch taking advantage of a kid just trying o earn a few $. If this is the pro-Obama type, I'll choose Romney any day.

^^ I didn't say anything about Obama, did I? Try not to put words in other people's mouths before you retort.

Obama^^ has never lied, cheated, or misinformed the public...rolleyes...never once in four years! Crickets chirping. They're both buffoons, get used to it As far as the girl goes, maybe a little bit of everything. Just another misinformed, brainwashed sheeple.

What it is, is an example of everthing the Romney camp has been about the entire campaign: lying, cheating and massive misinformation.

Colorado elections law is a mess.  There are specific prohibitions against Deputy county clerks and "high school deputy registrars" influencing party affiliation (C.R.S. 1-13-208-209) and against anyone interfering with or impeding registration (C.R.S. 1-13-201), but no specific stricture against the partisan conduct of voter registration drives.  Even though Colorado has motor-votor and self-registration, Republicans did what they could to encumber those who want to conduct voter registration drives, but nowhere in either the C.R.S. or in the Secretary of State's Rule 44 is there any explicit requirement of impartiality.  Wearing partisan regalia or making the statements the woman did while conducting a voter registration drive would tend to impede the registration of electors, and so should be a misdemeanor under C.R.S. 1-13-201 -- perhaps Dan May can look into that after he has pursued false criminal charges against every medical cannabis caregiver in El Paso County to defeat in front of juries.

@rockiesfever  Check out that FOX NEWS story,   It seems pretty dramatic.

"Felony charges related to election fraud have touched the 2008 race for the highest office in the land"

Ah, Fox!  You have to read to the end of the second parapraph to find out that it's about the Democratic primary, not the general election.  I find it hard to believe that they couldn't get enough signatures to get Obama on the primary ballot in Indiana, but I'm not condoning. this sort of thing.  I supported Hillary in 2008, and I'd like to see these Dems prosecuted.

The County Clerk says the young lady isn't doing anything illegal, so the national media is correct to not treat this like a smoking gun.  But if this had been an Obama supporter, Fox news would be showing this video every hour of the news cycle.

@rockiesfever  Your links have nothing to do with the subject of the article, which is about an abuse of the electoral process happening in Colorado Springs during this election.

@rockiesfever And yet you keep coming back to this site, again and again.  Seeking attention much?

@RobertChase bro, come on, fuck the springs. this article is about "abuse on the electoral process" in general. You do not like my links cause they do what westword would never do and expose electoral fraud  from your side. sorry to invade your safe haven

@rockiesfever I have already come out against  the two-party system, which has presented a choice between evils for so long that most possible political courses and solutions have been cut off even from consideration by the polity..  In terms of conventional political categories, I regard our problems as not having anything to do being poised between extremists of the Left and Right, but that the Right has so completely prevailed over the Left that it still can fans fear of an opponent which is largely nonexistent.

@RobertChasedenver post is so afraid of bankruptcy that they have become as full of shit, personal opinion, and fact manipulation as cnbc just to try and keep readers. if you knew me on a personal level you would take that statement back. I advocate only for a press world with less "what they want us to hear" and more "heres the real shit, now you decide" Same with the obama phenomenon, none of you question his bullshit, and the most popular answer when i expose it is...."romney would do the same" Look at the comments on the video i posted below for proof of that....

Anyway, You cannot tell me in all honesty that the sole reason westword posted the above video is exclusively its in Colorado, and you certainly cannot tell me that had that chick been advocating in the same light for king obama we would have read it here.....that, Mr. Chase is where im coming from. My generation is being positioned like a chess game

to follow this man by media and peer pressure,  me and my friends will battle that

@rockiesfever I do not like your links because they've got nothing to do with the article, and nothing to do with Colorado.

I do not imagine that WW serves as any sort of a "safe haven", but your sort of post would be so much more at home on the DP's website.
