Photos: Did Ann Romney forget her Mormon underwear at Denver debate?

Categories: Photos, Politics

Big photos below.
Most of the talk after last week's presidential debate in Denver was about how Mitt Romney had won according to most viewers. But another far more important topic was bubbling under the service: Did Ann Romney forgo the Temple garments she presumably wears as a member of the Mormon faith? One observer thinks she did, and presents evidence to back up his theory.

Here's a photo showing typical Temple garments for men and women:

mormon underwear.jpg
As you can see, the leggings for women are quite long -- knee-length, usually. As such, a photo from the day of the debate caught the eye of Justin McAfee, publisher and editor of The Nevada View, as well as a self-described Mormon. Here's a screen capture from McAfee's article, entitled "More Evidence Ann Romney Not Wearing Mormon Garments:"

ann romney mormon underwear screen capture.jpg
There's a lot of garment-free leg in this shot, as McAfee points out. But does that constitute proof Ann went commando, temple-garment-wise, while in Denver? Not according to a few of the commenters to the piece. One man wrote, "My wife is tall and yes her garments actually do hike up far more than you would think."

And then there's this exchange between McAfee and two readers:

Reader 1: This is so seriously stupid. When you sit down they can ride up. Big deal.

McAfee: Ha ha! You think they are riding up that far? Man, you are naive.

Reader 2: I take it you are not married. According to my wife yes they can ride up that far.

McAfee: Maybe the silk ones... :) But if they are, they are all the way up her....

Not that McAfee was the first to make these observations. After Ann appeared on The Tonight Show last month, the Temple-garment question made the rounds on Mormon social media and websites like Jezebel, which featured this shot of Romney with Jay Leno.

ann romney jay leno.jpg
As the Jezebel article notes, one Facebook commenter who weighed in on the subject after the Leno appearance thought Ann had struck a blow for Mormon fashion. The post reads: "Thank God for Ann. This is a cry to all the LDS Women in the world: 'It is okay to raise the hemline!' Now, let us pray she begins to work on the sleeves next."

However, a more disapproving observer shared an excerpt from a Mormon pamphlet that describes "immodest clothing" as any garment "that is tight, sheer, or revealing in any other manner. Young women should avoid short shorts and short skirts, shirts that do not cover the stomach, and clothing that does not cover the shoulders or is low-cut in the front or the back."

Oh yeah: When Romney spoke in Littleton the day before the debate, she wore pants.

Making fun of religious symbols is similar to the infamous video. Maybe we should get the mother of who ever wrote this story and pee on her face, then discuss if it was real pee or not.   What are you an idiot nigger gay muslim?

First, the skirt is way too long. Second, why is she wearing undies at all?  Third, she is wearing a clear frock. Fourth, drop boobs and not bombs!

@Steven, you may want to read up on your Mormon history, specifically the Mountain Meadows Massacre. No religion (nor its past) is perfect.

At least you never hear of Mormons committing wholesale slaughter on civilians using suicide bombers in the name of their "peaceful" religion. Let them wear whatever they want.

After giving birth to nine boys , WHO CARES which pair of undergarments Mrs . Romney chooses to wear ?  It's as if a landmine went off down there & the LAST THING I want is photos of the destruction ...

The pictures posted of garments are very out-dated and old..  (And seriously disrespectful to Mormon's- but that seems to be okay with the press). Ann is not the first Mormon woman to wear skin-colored short tights over her stretchy bottom garment. And a close look will show you the line of those tights. How about getting your mind out of people’s underwear and into the problems our country faces?

and not EVERY mormon wears that shit just like not every jew wears a yalmuka or tallis. Im gonna say it, I expect better. I realize your position and the "edgy" reporting westword does but seriously Id expect more class than this

Has anyone read or heard about The Overseas Finance Scandal that Obama is facing right now??

That just seems to be a bit more important than what fucking underwear a woman is wearing who survived cancer and is currently living with multiple sclerosis.

would it be too much trouble to leave the mans wife out of your bashings please?

all this shit about a man shouldnt choose a womans abortion rights bla bla bla, but satire like this is ok?  you gotta bring his chix underwear up?? if i was mitt youd be calling security when i showed up at the damn westword office no doubt.

@keisers Not quite . He does his best to be creative & sometimes he misses . ( SPORTS !!! )  But if you were to read WW cover to cover , you will have enjoyed or learned something for he contributes nearly 1/2 of the paper's content . WW would suck w/o Roberts .

Though I wish they'd add Robert Chase . I get a ton of info from the comments he leaves as well ...

Outdated?  All the mormons I know still wear this boner killing underwear and it's supposed to be loose fit like the picture.  Are they finally phasing it out like the naked touching in the temple?  That's right, until recently (2005 I think), the mormon church had old people who volunteered for the church as missionaries to partipate in temple ceremonies and the ones that conducted the endowment ceremony would rub holy oil on breasts, loins (sometimes genitals), and other body parts.  For first time ceremony participants, usually 19-21 year old male and female virgins, this was a shock and conducted without consent.  Many ex-mormons were traumatized by this ceremony and many felt sexually assaulted and left the church because of it which is why the mormon temple ceremonies were changed.  Up until 1990 the ceremony included penalties like swearing to kill yourself if you broke your temple vows, the mark is on the garments as a reminder of this promise.  Then there's the gong.......it really is out there.  If you want to know the truth about the mormon religion just cruise the ex-mormon sites.  For an 1800s perspective around the founders of the mormon religion read "Tell it all" by Fanny Stenhouse, prefaced by Harriet Beecher Stowe - free digital copies available here - http://openlibrary.org/books/OL23370212M/Tell_it_all

@rockiesfever My comment here disappeared so I'll post it again.  If you have never been in a mormon temple then you wouldn't know.  Every worthy mormon adult is supposed to go through a temple endowments ceremony where they are instructed to wear the garments at all times except where the garments might draw attention or mockery.  In this situation Ann Romney purposely chose to wear a dress that drew attention to the fact that she was not wearing mormon garments.  This dress that would have gotten her escorted out of a mormon temple and shunned if she walked into a mormon church.  She could have worn mormon approved clothing but didn't because she wanted to look normal.  From what I have been told by active members, mormons have been instructed to vote with one voice and are actively shunning members that voice support for Obama and I think that is crazy.  I do understand your frustration because it does seem like the westword picks sides on political issues and is very anti-romney.  This is not unbiased media.

@rockiesfever  I think the point is that the Romney's will compromise their values to get into the white house and come across as phonies.

 @xMormon  @rockiesfever

rockiesfever, how do you know she "purposely chose" the dress? And no, it would not have had her escorted out of the temple or shunned.  I work in a temple and know this for a fact.  We are never instructed to vote with one voice or told in anyway how to vote by the Church, infact the opposite is true.  We are just encouraged to vote.  As an exmormon, you have probably forgotten alot.

@xMormon No. Theres a fucking close up image of up her dress. its disgusting. This article is yet another stab at bashing the unobama one. but this is too far and frankly i wish the sex laws were such that she could sue for this picture. its ok to post a pic like this if its of big bad romneys wife, but itd be porn if it was mrs obama ir any other celeb right? Fuck you and that sick logic.

and your problem is not with the romneys, your problem is with mormanism. "Xmorman" is your blog name and would yuou be posting at all if it werent for your resentment against mormons? no. because you never say anything about them unless its something mormon. You sound like pre-war europeans screaming how everything wrong is cause of the jews.

xMormon
xMormon

@keisers  Right, she accidentally put that dress on.  Because she is married to a millionaire you probably wouldn't have escorted her out but you and I both know she would have never worn that dress into a mormon temple.

Vote with one voice is happening in your church.

"an official of the Mormon church has disseminated a presentation across the key swing state of Nevada that urges members to vote and speak “with one voice” in the coming Presidential election that pits Mormon Mitt Romney against President Barack Obama"

It's not just in Nevada either.

@rockiesfever  Aren't you the guy always bashing muslims and now you're calling me out for intolerance?  Didn't mean to jump in your line of fire but once again you have no idea what you are talking about.  I post under xMormon to show that I have experience with the mormon church and that I know what I am talking about.  This article was about whether or not Ann Romney was breaking her mormon covenant so my comments were focused on that.  My family and many friends are mormon.  I do not hate mormons, I hate the mormon church.  I don't hate the brainwashed, most of them are good people, I hate the brainwashers, the corrupt leaders of the mormon church, like Mitt Romney.  Mitt Romney will say anything to be elected president.  He is a chameleon and has proved that.  If he would have run for president with the political positions he supported as governer I would probably be voting for him but he slithers and slimes like a snake.  Again, I think the point of the article is that the Romney's will compromise their values to get into the white house and come across as phonies.  Vote for a phony if you want, I don't care.
