Mitt Romney's debate victory: Did Denver help elect the next president...again?

mitt romney debate.jpg
Mitt Romney.
You knew Mitt Romney had won the presidential debate at the University of Denver last night when MSNBC commentators Chris Matthews and Ed Schultz -- pundits whose progressive tilt isn't exactly a secret -- seemed so mad they were practically spitting the second the ninety-minute face-off was over. It was the sort of thing Stephen Colbert had hyped in humorous fashion as the "Up-ender in Denver" the night before, but the results were no joke.

While the campaign of Barack Obama tried to lower expectations about the president's performance, the average person likely figured that given his awesome speaking skills, he'd mop the floor with Mitt. Instead, Romney reversed this curse, at least from a stylistic standpoint. Could the results put Denver in the position of unmaking the presidency of a man the city helped to put there in the first place?

Barack Obama accepting the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination at Mile High Stadium.
Granted, plenty went into Obama's 2008 victory. But if there was a single event that made his election not only seem possible but inevitable, it was his appearance at Mile High Stadium to accept the Democratic presidential nomination. The spectacular setting and his confident demeanor galvanized his followers in a way that rolled through election day like history of the most inexorable sort.

Last night, in contrast, Obama came across as hesitant, halting and caught off-guard by Romney's tactics, which pretty much revolved around spinning, obfuscating or downright reversing his positions on taxes, Social Security and lots more in a manner that suggested he'd felt that way all along, and anyone who claimed otherwise was simply confused. It was a brilliantly cynical strategy aimed directly at undecided voters -- the kind who haven't been paying much attention to the race up until now and make their decisions based more on gut instinct than on facts and figures.

At today's planned rally in Denver, and during commercials that should start rolling out anytime now, Obama will no doubt highlight the contradictions in Romney's statements. But because he didn't do so in real time last night -- or at least failed to do it more forcefully and persuasively when given the opportunity -- he's allowed Mitt to climb off the mat and become the sort of plausible November winner Matthews and Schultz probably couldn't envision after the infamous 47 percent comment -- which Obama somehow managed not to mention on the DU stage.

If Romney is elected, he'll likely have October 3, 2012 in Denver to thank.

Here are a couple of segments from last night's debate.

At the end I thought is as a wash. No one really getting the edge. Listening on the radio in my car while coming home from work it sounded like Obama was kicking ass. On tv I though Obama looked down to much and should have look more at Mitt. Mitt looked and acted like a used car salesman.  I didn't  see really any big "got you" moment from either. Next day after all the fact checking was done, Mitt really did live up to being a used car salesman.

Odd that you point out Mitt losing.  The real loser's will be the American people if they re-elect this clown for another 4 years.  Wasn't it blatantly obvious that this president of ours is a complete phony and completely unarmed in a battle of wits without a teleprompter to read from.  The complete lack of preparation on his part shows what a pathetic individual he is.  He complains that he was being made to prepare for the debate the day before the debate, then closes the debate by stating how hard he is going to work.  This poseur has to go.

While Mitt may have won the 'performance' part of the debate, he lost in every other respect, unless blatantly lying is now a debate qualification.

Everything he said was either a blatant lie, or a flip-flop from previously voiced statements or a contradiction of what is published on his own website as evidenced by him now trying to retreat from his own 47% comments.

There are a lot more voters now who fact check and do the research to actually know what someone has said or stands for and last night the Mitt we saw was a complete 180 from that.

Obama Won! Romney had a stupid smile on his face and no facts to base anything on. Being a jerk doesnt make you a winner!

How can someone win a debate? it's not like they gave them points or something. I know... put them both on Dancing with the Stars.

I love all the staunch republican bias. AGAIN, you can't win a debate by blatantly lying, mitt provides ZERO examples or facts for ANY of his plans, obama's is online in a pdf. you can view! I am not a democrat. I am an independent and my vote will go nowhere near the foul stench that is the republican party.

I didn't know you could 'win' by blatantly lying.  Sorry, try again anybody with half a brain will be fact checking.  Maybe you want to watch again bud, because Romney becomes growlingly frustrated, while obama remains calm, because he isn't trying to cover up lies the entire time

who are these people that think romney won? all he did was spout meaningless stats and didnt make one clear point about his own plans, specifically economic. romney was acting like a school kid arguing with his teacher. obama on the other hand made many well documented points about WHAT HE'S ALREADY DONE, and was calm cool and collected. stupid people listen with their eyes.

Obama wasn't terrible but Romney was on fire.  Independents will begin the move to Romney now.  When MSNBC can't find something good to say about O, all hope is lost.

Mitt was rude beyond belief. Talk about entitled mentality! He called POTUS a lying child, interrupted him, and ignored the moderator. Actions speak so loud I can't hear your words.

Unless and until the format of these "debates" begin to follow recognized rules of debate (http://www.nationalforensics.org/lincoln-douglas-debate/ld-rules), they will continue to be a complete waste of time.  The last thing we need in American Politics is another media event.  What we need is a real debate based on facts and details.

I personally don't give a fuck whether Romney or Obama "win" a "debate" such as last night.  It was just as meaningless as their attack ads.

Mitt broke the rules of the debate! You can win if you don't abide by the rules. He is disqualified in my book.

I watched the debate and I'm mystified as to why it's being said that Romney 'won'. imo, most of what Romney spewed lacked substance. His oddly placed humor and smiles were reminiscent of a caricature. Not that I think Obama was stellar. Obama went off on tangents seemingly unrelated to the topic at hand. Foremost thought: What would the outcome be if either one of them truly knew what it's like to be struggling in this economy?

Yes David, I agree that Mitt is a bully. I didn't even watch the debates and I could guess that

Romney came off as a bully in my opinion, Obama seemed to be more calm and collected while Romney seemed like a big angry asshole. Obama also seemed to have more substance to his arguments... while Romney was more vague. either way... this reminded me how pointless these debates really are, everyone is just going to see the debate through their own personal bias. And even worse are the pundits... who have to anoint a winner and loser 1 minute after the "debate" is over... what is clear from this debate is that there is a clear choice... but neither candidate is really saying anything new.

I still don't agree with anything Romney says. He just affirmed that he's totally out of touch with the vast majority of Americans.

Come on people. There was nothing new last night. It was live tv commercials with no new takes. So what if Mitt practiced more, he's got the time. He's not the President of the United States. The President is a busy man. The only thing I got out of the debate last night was that Mitt Romney thinks the State of Massachusetts is better than any other State in the Union. Unemployment isn't Obamas fault. The economy isn't Obamas fault. The entire world is having problems and neither of them can solve the worlds problems. Technological advancements and the internet have had much to do about people losing their jobs and it has been taking a while for that to catch up with us. It just happened while Obama has been President. I bet those that didn't cash out their 401k's aren't feeling so bad about them now. People that live in states that make cars and parts are doing better than what it could have been. And I bet there are a few spouses out there that are glad to get their loved ones Stateside instead of some war somewhere. If Mitt is elected, they will be going to Iran and Syria. Some people are getting some good rates on houses out there if you can afford one. Let's not just blame who's President and take some of the responsibility ourselves. Immigrants come over her today with nothing and still make something. Dust yourself off and rise up America!!!

My core beliefs and values..the things that I believe contribute to the making the greater good better...cannot be swayed by 90 minutes of smooth talking, one-line jabs and zingers and broad generalizations of policies and future plans for our country. The informed voter who really gives a shit is going to do his/her research and not vote based soley on an outdated political formality.

I think Mitt Romney like past Republican candidates have, has his eyes on another war and its enormous profits. Guess if it benefits you to go to war, you would study hard at make believing things up but not really understanding what the funny people in suits wrote for you. Obama won, but media wants to help Romney out by saying "Romney won". Lol. Funny.

lol, gotta love the tighty righties' desperate clinging to any illusion of success that their deeply flawed candidate puts forth... anyone who makes their decision on Rmoney's lie-filled, bullying performance last night is shallow to the point of idiocy. Anyway, Obama won his debate with Bin Laden... I think that win's a tad more significant.

Barry didn't "inherit" anything - he spent over $700 million to shoulder that responsibility with empty promises of hope and change. Last night you got to see what he really is when he can't rely on prepared questions and rehearsed answers fed through a teleprompter. He's had four years to try and turn things around and has done a poor job. Time to go with plan B and see what Mittens can do at the helm.

@Flyer9753 that entire debate was a fact check on obamas bullshit by romney....which is why obama did not hit back with any facts to disprove what he was saying. He was as speechless and dumbfounded as anyone is when caught in a lie. Sorry to break it to you, but obama is not the saint his admirers make him out to be

Stevart

@stevedibs He doesn't have to cover up lies.  He has the press to do it for him...like today's jobs numbers.  No matter...when he gets re-elected you be goin' to see how its like livin' in the third world be like.  Somehow I don't think you'll like it.

@rockiesfever  @Flyer9753   how do you reply to 38 lies in 90 minutes, fact checkers melted down, it was a performance all BS,but he did tilt his hand on his BS, Obama in 2 and 3 will beat him to death with it, plus when his campaign said his idea would not cover pre existing conditions in a press release , And they call you out , you are in deep dog do.

rockiesfever

@michael.roberts  @stevedibs Wow really? Really????? Thats how your going to justify Romney MOPPING THE FUCKING FLOOR with Obama??? It was all lies grrr!!

Obama didnt even know theres no "tax credit" for shipping jobs over seas, and when Romney called him on it Obama obviously didnt know that was true cause he looked at the ground like he was in trouble lol!!!! So in theory, obamas the liar even if it was out of ignorance! Romney had an opportunity to tell his side of obamas stupid commercials and he did just that. The quote of the evening..... " I have 5 boys, im used to someone telling me something over and over until they think i will believe but that doesnt make it true!" -Mitt Romney

Obama had nothing to say. He got whooped. admit it! Even Obama himself admitted defeat. Even fucking CNN the fox news of the left said it. Whooped fair and square. Whooped!

rockiesfever
rockiesfever

@teknik  @michael.roberts  @stevedibs Obama has presented it as a "tax break" JUST AS HE DID ON THE STAGE WHICH IS WHAT PROMPTED ROMNEYS REPLY!!! Also, any outsourcing that bain companies did was after romney left bain....factcheck.org will confirm that.

They will also confirm that some of the companies that donated to obamas 08 campaign like solyndra that we gave 900 million to just to watch them go bankrupt did in fact outsource to asia. And sorry buddy, buddy aside from your vote, the democrats dont care about you.

teknik
teknik

 @rockiesfever  @michael.roberts  @stevedibsit's not a tax credit, it's a tax break and a wage break.

sending jobs overseas saves the bottom line and if you think the GOP cars about the american citizen more than the bottom line you're sadly mistaken.

Obama may be Obama, but he's not a con artist member of the GOP.  And sorry buddy, but aside from your vote the GOP doesn't care about you.
