The senseless massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, which took the lives of twenty children, including Olivia Engel, seen here, plus seven adults, instantly stirs terrible memories of the 1999 attack on Columbine High School. On the tenth anniversary of that tragedy, we assembled a horrific roster of school shootings in the decade since Columbine, based on data from the Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence. In updating that list below, we discovered that there have been 73 more school shootings since our 2009 post -- at least.

We add this last caveat because the Brady Campaign document, entitled "Major School Shootings in the United States Since 1997," was assembled this past February -- and given the rate of shootings seen in the document, it's likely a dozen more incidents or more have taken place in the nearly ten months since the most recent entry.

As you'll note, these events don't all involve mass casualties. Indeed, some of them don't even result in an injury. But the majority involve injuries or deaths -- often multiple ones -- and it's extraordinarily disturbing to realize that most of them didn't make national news. The average item was likely treated as a local news item in the towns where they took place -- an indication of how inured we've become to the idea of shootings at our nation's schools.

We think the total number of incidents listed here is 179, but we could have lost count. That's how many of them there've been since the Columbine attack. Read about them below.

Fallacy of false comparison, dickwad. 1. US military personnel go through vigorous, extensive training to PROPERLY use a firearm (beyond mere hours on the shooting range) as well as having to endure a thorough psychological evaluation prior to even enlisting -- things that which are not required to obtain a concealed-carry permit. 2. Most deployed military personnel almost never leave their otherwise HEAVILY SECURED bases in overseas war zones; those that are obviously most at risk are those sent into direct combat operations engaging with hostile forces away from such "green zones." 3. The "rules of the battlefield" do not directly translate into civilian life. Clearly, you are a blatantly illogical twit. An exercise in utter sophistry. You fail miserably.

Between '03-'11, US Servicemen serving in Iraq suffered lower causality rates from gun violence (every single month) than civilians that were forced to live under unconstitutional gun control measures in cities like Detroit and Chicago. Logic and reason are not friends to your argument, sir. Respect the fallen, arm the responsible.

BTW, dickwad, do you even understand the meaning of the term "logic?" Also, have you even taken a course in rudimentary modern logic in high school or in community college? The most likely answer to both questions would be a resounding "NEIN!" Why? Because asshats like yourself would deem such a curricula to be "librul braynwashun!"

The debate coach actually kicked him off the team -- likely the impetus for this kid wanting to resort to such extreme "2nd Amendment solutions". Ergo, your assertion that is was a "liberal" debate team is utter horse shit. In fact, any ideological prerequisites would run afoul of school administrators and result in the termination of faculty responsible for implementing them. "Nuff said," you fucking morAn.

Sterling Meeks
Sterling Meeks

Yet, you don't even attempt to adequately prove how your purported "logic" "failed" me (or anyone else who isn't a delusional wing nut). Instead, you revert to your usual woeful defense mechanisms and endless projecting.....asshole.

Apparently, you seem to have difficulty even with grade-school reading comprehension or even able to stay on topic. Your original comment wasn't alluding to some overly general "right to travel" but, instead, was exclusive to MOTOR VEHICLES. Ergo, my original replies were VALID. You, sir, are clearly a fucking morAn.

Robert Barnhart

You don't even know the difference between driving and the right to travel. Glad to see that brainwashing's working wonders and keep calling names if it makes you feel better.

When logic fails a liberal, he turns to calling names. *pats on head* I looked him up, and "Sterling" is a troll account. Poor lil fella!

By the way, you imbecile, even the conservative activist decision in DC v. Heller acknowledged that while there may exist an individual right to bear arms, the majority decision also emphasized that such a right was NOT absolute, meaning that government still has the authority to regulate specific types of arms as it concerns public safety. Now, back to the kiddies' table.

One needs a driver's license to operate a motor vehicle on any publicly-owned roadway. An approved form of government-issued identification is also required to board a commercial airliner (in addition, a license to actually operate a small aircraft in PUBLICLY-REGULATED airways). Your analogy fails miserably, fucking morAn.

Uh, Profitteer, is has been repeatedly proven that schools being designated as "gun free zones" has virtually NOTHING to do with the infamous tragedies that took place over the past couple of decades. (Never mind the obvious truth that even before the implementation of "gun free" policies in the early 1990s, there were other notable instances of mass shootings on public schools and college campuses.) Fucking morAn.

Robert Barnhart
Robert Barnhart

Do you know you legally don't need a drivers licence to travel in the United States? If not you'll never understand what illegally regulated means.

Dylan Profitt

Uh, Dale? Schools are a gun free zone. See how CRIMINALS follow laws? Why not make the laws friendlier to people who follow them?

"crap doc....this lung cancer is killing me, what do I do?!" "Here...smoke more cigarettes..." Stupid conservative logic..

DONT FORGET KENT STATE SHOOTING. every one seems to forget that one. Where the shooting was done by goverment.

Sterling Meeks

Ahem. One's personal liberty is not the least bit predicated upon another's ability to amass a large cache of high-powered weaponry. (In practice, it is often that those areas with easy, virtually unlimited access to firearms tend be the LEAST free, due the culture of fear generated by a certain societal element's desire to "take back" what was never truly theirs to own to begin with and using such arms to intimidate others who do not share their myopic view of the world.)

Sterling Meeks
Sterling Meeks

"Illegally regulated?" That doesn't make the least bit of fucking sense.

Sterling Meeks
Sterling Meeks

Mind you, Columbine High had an armed Sheriff's deputy on campus before Klebold & Harris went on their rampage (and his actions may have actually exacerbated -- not reduced -- the carnage).

Sterling Meeks

Yet, motor vehicles are still subject to more regulation than firearms.

Time to arm a few, sane, teachers....and do away from "gun free" zones. All they do is take concealed weapons out of the hands of law abiding citizens. If you disagree, you have the mental disorder known as liberalism.

Actually school shootings started with Kent state when my friends sister was murdered by the coward government. Allison's motto was flowers not bullets for peace. I don't know why the media doesn't report the first school shooting that numerous sings have been sung about. Maybe because the victims were murdered by the government? How about some justice for the lives took in Ohio at Kent state...?
