Video: Miss Universe says medical marijuana is good, but recreational pot will slow people down

The legalization of marijuana is such a hot topic that even Olivia Culpo, the newly crowned Miss Universe, is weighing in on its merits. Culpo is the first American to win the title in fifteen years -- and she's now representing a country where recreational pot is legal in two states. Medical marijuana is fine, she said in an interview, but recreational pot is bad -- and will stop people from reaching their full potential.

Here's the video, from the Huffington Post:

When asked about marijuana, she says:

I think that...marijuana for medical purposes is understandable, but I don't think that it should be legalized for recreational purposes, because it's been proven to prevent people from their full potential. And I don't think that's a good thing for society. If we're trying to move things forward, a drug like marijuana does the opposite. It will slow things down. And once again, for medical purposes I think it's great, but for everyday, no.

Her comments come as a Colorado task force begins its research on how to actually legalize marijuana in the state -- and some of the governor-appointed members of that group share Culpo's concerns that legal pot is bad for society.

Culpo, a twenty-year-old Boston University sophomore from Rhode Island, did not address the part of the interviewer's question that asked whether she had ever smoked pot.

But before moving on to a different topic, she acknowledged that recreational marijuana could have some benefits. She said, "It's not gonna do anything. Except for the economy, I understand that, but I don't think it's a good idea."

I like to ask the drive thru attendant about quantum physics. It's good to let them weigh in and hear what they have to say.

Medical marijuana is legal in this state, recreational pot is legal too, so can the stoners stop spreading the lies that pot is not bad for you?

I have smoked plenty of pot in my life and still fall into bad habits occasionally. I can say unequivocally that pot is bad for you. It hurts your lungs, and it makes you stupid and lazy.

We all have countless friends who never reached their true potential because they couldn't put the bong down. We all have friends who never graduated college because they chose to smoke weed instead of study.

Smoking pot is a victimless "crime". It your right to do anything you want to your body, just stop spreading the lies that it does no damage to your mind or body.

Answered your question. Are you not going to extend the same courtesy?

Corey: What did you think about last year's cover story on you? Journalism or not?

@patricia.calhoun No, it was not. It was nice made me feel good and sold you a bunch of advertisments but it was a human intrest story. Wasn´t it the most heavly advertized print last year? I bet you Village Voice was happy, keepthem in the black. I am an interesting person and damn good looking so it was an easy human interest peice but journilism no. Kelsey is a good writer though. Although 1 dui not 4 if you looked at the case numbers you would have see they were the same, but cheking that is a job for the Editor.

I answered your question now like South-Park-Ranger, asked, why don´t you mine. And I will make it very spicific so you can provide an answer.

Patricia Calhoun Editor of the Westword, as a journilist and editor, Why are you not asking for the conversation between Nixonlooper and the Federal Government regarding the passage of A64? Is this conversation not of vital public interest? What reason are you sitting on your hands with this story and printing government press releases, your a journilist not a propagandist, correct?

Sorry it was three question, but I am sure there is answers for them.

If you don´t believe that that conversation in vital to the public, maybe a little brushing up on your coad of ethics is in order.

She says its proven that it prevents people from reaching their full potential... That is the biggest crock of shit I've ever heard. Proven where? When? She sounds retarded.

A64 clearly indicates that "recreational" marijuana is far more dangerous than "medical" marijuana ...

... so much so that NO ADULT under 21 years old should be allowed ANY LEGAL ACCESS to it.

She's a beauty queen, I couldn't give a shit about ANYTHING she has to say. Besides, is she really going to say anything to upset the sponsors?

Does it really matter what Miss Universe's take on MMJ is? She's a 20 year old sophomore at BU; not even old enough to legally buy booze. Ask her what she thinks of weekend binge drinking and its affect on society as a whole...

So don't consume it--problem solved. I noticed you didn't answer the question about whether you've consumed it. If you haven't, you aren't informed enough to have the opinion you shared. If you have, you're a hypocrite. Don't encroach on the freedom of others, though. BTW, a lot of creative people use it to enhance their creativity.

@CoreyDonahue

I don't know you but have absorbed a ton of info you have shared over the past year . I'm confused why this issue w/ Patricia is so consuming on your part, you'd carry it over into these blogs ? TWICE, I have had hundreds of media outlets & sources tracking and hounding, sending me off into hiding . Ms Calhoun & WW are the SOLE local publication who has ALWAYS left me %%100 ALONE !

It's confusing WHY people don't pull this shit w/ the Post ? It's one of the WORST newspapers in the country AND it's in our OWN backyard ! I'm banned but quite often read references left in these blogs . WTF ???!!!  Tee off on the Post and give WW a break ! Petty & Murphy are primed for your input,  I'm sure .

Otherwise, when I am in need of attention, I turn to my dog . He's the only one I care to impress ! The SPCA has plenty available and in need of good homes ! Just a suggestion .....

@CoreyDonahue sorry, corey: I've been swamped with Michael Roberts and many other staffers on vacation. I am planning on an in-depth reply as soon as I clear several things off my desk. BTW, we requested a tape of that conversation last month; we were told it was not recorded -- and I think you received the same response.)

@Juan_Leg Where is the Donkey?  I miss that guy.  He ignores me now that A64 is behind us and we no longer have anything to argue about.

I begged him to insult me a few weeks ago...but no response.

Being ignored by the Donkey is much worse than being abused.

@Juan_Leg I think that...anal for medical purposes is understandable, but I don't think that it should be legalized for recreational purposes, because it's been proven to prevent people from their full potential (in bed).

@patricia.calhoun  I did recieve that reply, that is the point. So, in a democracy, that´s what your told you live in, why is the government of the State of Colorado having a conversation with Federal Government regarding the implementation of A64, a newly passed constitutional amendment. And you as the premire newssource in Colorado regarding cannabis issues pretend this is a non issue. Watergate was political spying, LOOPERGATE: a conversation between the government of Colorado and the governement of the United State of America on how to thwart constitution and the will of the people in Colorado, regarding the the passage of A64.

Patricia, please prove me wrong I say the conversation was to twart the will of the people the government says there is no recording. Who is to be believed? Hell Loopergate is already in the urban dictionary. If the WW is going to just trust what the government said was said then how is that not spreading government propaganda?

Propaganda: is a form of communication that is aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position by presenting only one side of an argument.  So, cold you please print again what the government is telling you was said.

So the secret conversation -- conspiracy -- between the State Governor and the Federal Law Enforcers was done in violation of Colorado law ?

If there's such a Colorado law, we don't know of it...and we've spent 35 years following the legal twists and turns that affect reporting. If you have a specific law in mind, please share it. And thanks.

@kevin_hunt @Juan_Leg

Costs of industrial hemp production vary with individual circumstances. Small acreage. low yields, age and cost of equipment used, cost of land and alternative uses for the land all contribute to the cost of producing a tonne of hemp straw or grain.

The value of the hemp straw varies according to its demand in the market place. Factors such as fibre length, fineness, colour and the demand for a specific quality of fibre affects the farm-gate price. These qualities are influenced by the variety of industrial hemp, the maturity of the plants, conditions during retting and quality of storage. Yield of straw affects both costs and returns per hectare.

The price of hemp straw varies according to the individual market place. Contracts have been offered to growers, but it is not known if the price offered was representative of the true market value. There are no reliable price or quality indicators in Ontario at the present time. Actual prices paid to the grower have ranged from $70-$180 per tonne, depending on quality and intended use. Persons considering industrial hemp as a cash crop are advised to secure a contract with a reliable firm before investing in the crop.

Grain markets have been slightly more active, and prices have been noted between $0.45-$0.55 per pound while markets were being expanded unhindered. Interference by U.S. customs with sales to U.S. markets, and the loss of a major contractor in Western Canada in the same period has created much uncertainty in the hemp grain marketplace.

How many TONS are you planning on growing, eh numbnuts?

@Juan_Leg I have read that marijuana is good for treating a sore bungie.

Perhaps that's why she wouldn't deny using marijuana and endorses medical use.
