Video: Diana DeGette pushes for immediate vote on high-capacity magazine ban

We reported yesterday that Representative Ed Perlmutter, a Democrat, plans to introduce an assault weapons ban on the very first day of the new Congress. But his colleague, Democrat Diana DeGette, is pushing for gun-control action even sooner with a bill to ban high-capacity assault magazines that she wants to see voted and passed this week, before the end of the 112th Congress. See video of her speech below.

Here's footage, courtesy of DeGette's office, of her testimony yesterday in Washington, D.C., in which she urged the leadership to give Congress a chance to vote this week on legislation that would ban the production and sale of high-capacity ammunition clips.

Since the Aurora theater shooting on July 20, both Perlmutter and DeGette have said they support policy changes that might reduce the risk of a terrible mass shooting.

Just days after suspect James Holmes entered a movie theater and fired shots that killed twelve and injured dozens more, Perlmutter called for the reinstatement of the assault weapons ban. His aides say he has been working on this bill for months, but he renewed the call this week and said he would bring it forward on the first day of the new Congress next month.

The urgency and momentum around the measure stems from the tragedy in Connecticut on Friday, in which a twenty-year-old gunman, with the same kind of assault rifle that Holmes carried, entered an elementary school and killed twenty children and six adults.

That horrific event has sparked a heated gun debate across the country -- and one that is getting a lot of attention in Colorado, where two days before the shooting, Governor John Hickenlooper said he wants to see new legislation that would address this kind of violence.

And yesterday President Barack Obama, who has said he supports the assault weapons ban, made his boldest move yet on gun policy, announcing a task force on the issue that will come up with a package of policy recommendations in January.

Yesterday also marked the Democrats' push for a "first step to address gun massacres," as DeGette's office says in a press release. DeGette, who in August introduced a bill to restrict online ammunition sales, joined Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, Representative Carolyn McCarthy of New York and dozens of House Democrats to call for the immediate passage this week of a bill that would prohibit the sale of the kind of clips that were used in Newtown, Connecticut, and in Aurora. Perlmutter also supports this measure; if it doesn't pass this week, his office says it will be folded into the assault weapons ban he has proposed.

DeGette's measure, which she and McCarthy introduced earlier this Congress, needs to come to a vote immediately if they hope to pass it this year. That would require buy-in from the GOP.

Continue for more on Diana DeGette's remarks yesterday.

with all the copycat and follow-up shootings that happen in this country, I put the blame squarely on the madia.  It's the media that gives these shit-stain gunman GUARRANTEED IMMORTALITY by making damed sure that EVERYONE knows exactly who the shooters are, their pasts, and even what they had for breakfast.  The Media has way more blood on their hands than does the firearms industry.

Diana DeGette is either a complete idiot or genuinely evil.... time will tell.   She is an absolute moron thats seen too many movies:  paraphase a quote in this video "with smaller magazines, someone will be able to tackle the shooter while they're reloading"   What The Fuck!?!?

10 out of 10 leftist politicians and criminals prefer unarmed victims.

I'd feel great. Can't believe this is even in question.

The Road to Hell is, and will always be, paved with leftist intentions....Reference those that were tortured, killed ordisappeared under Hitler (National Socialist German Workers' Party),Stalin (Communist Party), Chairman Mao Zedong (Communist Party),Pol Pot (Cambodian Maoist revolutionary/Khmer Rouge), Idi Amin Dada(Socialist/Communist, worked closely with the Russians and East Germans),Castro (Cuban Communist), Che Guevara (Argentine Marxist),Benito Mussolini ( Italian Socialist Party/ National Fascist Party),Kim Jong-Ill and son Kim Jong-Un (Communist, North Korea), NicolaeCeausescu (Communist Rumania), François "Papa Doc" Duvalier and sonJean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier (Communist, Haiti), Augusto Pinochet(Communist, Chile), Josip Broz Tito (Communist, Yugoslavia).I would think that our current President Obama will eventually rise tothe "Greatness" of the men on this list. History will be the judge.

The Leftists/Socialists/Communist are well versed with the facts of gun control, All they need to know is:

History Repeats Itself.....

QUOTE, US Representative Ed Perlmutter (D) - Colorado's 7th District

"If you want to shoot off a hundred rounds in under a minute, join the military"

... Sounds like this:

"Germans who wish to use firearms should join the SS or the SA —Ordinary citizens don’t need guns, as their having guns doesn’t serve theState." — Heinrich Himmler, German Nazi.

I'm not saying good old Ed is a Nazi, but it is troubling to here the same stuff repeat itself.

sounds awesome but how do you get what's already out there when no one has registered to buy them already?

So what's to stop the homicidal maniacs from obtaining and using multiple smaller capacity magazines? ... or multiple weapons?

We should restrict access to transportation so if someone goes off...they cant just jump in the car and drive somewhere. Easy access to cars causes all the problems.

Very few modern guns use clips. Those went out of style around WWI. A magazine is different than a clip.

There's plenty of them been made already, just have to pay a higher price for them. Idiots.

If a crazy person wants a gun, silencer, high capacity clip or whatever....no law would stop them from buying/making one. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a freakin idiot.

The reason they want to push this through now is to take advantage of the emotion before logic returns. The ban on full-capacity magazines did nothing in the 94-04 ban, and will do nothing now, except irritate law abiding citizens exercising their rights.

Oh ya then the crazies will just buy 3 10 round mags vs a " high capacity" 30 round mag. There is also a difference between clips and magazines lack of education is the problem easy finger to point but not the answer

Is there a true solution ? Or is this the necessary and obliging reaction following such an event as in Newtown & Aurora ? Elected officials running in circles, cued by cameras ? Our President's heart-filled responses carry little more weight than you and I . What can we do to prevent these kind of travesties w/ stiffer regulation ? Columbine, Aurora Theater, Newtown, ect ..., what new proposed gun regulation would have prevented these young men from killing if that were their intention ?

As a society, we do not glorify any kind of mass slaying outside of, arguably, war. I've heard the finger directly pointed at video games, just as with back in the 80's & references towards Heavy Metal. Someone please explain how this isn't a question beyond self-accountability, making it nearly impossible to detect and prevent ?

I am by nature, a very social person. I smile and say," Hi.", to everyone. Back when I drank, I'd buy someone a shot & beer who NEEDED it & most of the time let them 'Get it off their chest's' over a game of pool or something. The short period I bar-tended was basically underpaid professional counseling . To this day,  I haven't been approached by anyone desiring to unload multiple magazines into an elementary school. Nor have I won the 'PowerBall'.

What more can we do than BE nicer & genuine in caring for a neighbor ? Taking a moment & listening . I'm surrounded by Regis students, and we talk all the time. Good students attending a neighborhood school, most of whom from out of state. Much of our last discussions have included in cases where guns were sent along by parent, to see they are returned home UNNEEDED . I'm not hearing the 'Fight fire with fire' mentalities.

If you don't have a job that requires a firearm,  take it as a sign, YOU DON'T NEED A GUN ! My house was burglarized a cpl years ago while I wasn't home. A labtop, pills, along w/ all my glassware,  GONE !!! I'd hate the thought of a gun being added to that list !

See my avatar ? That's my 135lbs, best friend. He goes w/ me EVERYWHERE. I don't need a gun ! Rottweilers do the job quite well & you can't ask for a more trainable breed .

@DonkeyHotay They're not supposed to be, but the governments that were trusted to stop them are incompetent. In typical fashion, after watching the government fail, people are now interested in trusting it with new failures--responsibilities.

Regulation Works! NOT!

Just wait until the State decides that Rottweilers are dangerous... like Pit Bulls... then they will ban your dog.  That's the problem with big government... THEY get to decide what's best for you because you are just some idiot that elected them... They are just acting in your best interest, right?

Big government = FAIL BIG TIME ALL THE TIME

@Juan_Leg You don't get to decide that Americans don't need firearms. That's pretty much like me saying you need to shut the fuck up...which wouldn't be a bad idea, actually.

I'd merely suggest that you should shut the fuck up. You would have the state use violence to take away the other right.

See how that works! You can't play favorites with constitutionally respected freedoms.

@No Snakes Yup, and people like Juan_Leg apparently don't give a crap if it's not a right they exercise. Real Americans support all rights.

@Cognitive_Dissident My roommate is a RESPONSIBLE, multi-gun owner . In the 22 months we have lived together, not once have I laid eyes on the firearms . As a matter of fact, I was under the impression he had moved them but understandably, gum owners WANT their guns . I haven't a logical position to ask any differently of him nor would I . Hence 'RESPONSIBLE' .

Yet, when the topic IS broached w/ the students in my neighborhood & I inquire on their individual needs for a gun, I DO encourage these young men to consider the most dangerous of potentials . I am a gambling man & realize the extremely low percentages of guns that are illegally used . Especially lethally speaking . At the same time I'm left to question likewise cases where a firearm resulted in a justified homicide . There are FAR MORE murders than justifiable killings where a firearm was used . We are talking thousands to one here, & you can't just ignore those kinds of numbers .

Or I could be like you & S.T.F.U. in lieu of the NEXT tragedy, at which point we can join hands in some prayer circle , asking 'god' to 'look out' for the mommy & daddy of a murdered seven year old . THAT WORKS FUCKING GREAT !!!!! Remember, it's ALL in 'god's' plan ..........
