Dog shooting by deputy not his first: He claims self-defense in border-collie-mix killing

Wilfred Europe.
Update: Monday's shooting of border-collie mix named Ziggy by an Adams County deputy -- see our previous coverage below -- continues to spin off new developments. The latest? An attorney for deputy Wilfred Europe insists that his client shot the dog in self-defense, and denies that Europe and his fellow officers were responding to the wrong address. However, he confirms that Europe had previously shot another dog while on duty.

Once again, this information comes to us from CBS4's Brian Maass, who's leading the pack on this story. He was the first to identify the shooter of Ziggy as Europe, and also revealed that the deputy had shot and killed forty-year-old Don Cambron during a traffic stop last year. Europe was cleared of any wrongdoing in that incident, even though the weapon Cambron is said to have been reaching for after being pulled over was a pellet gun.

Donald Sisson.
This time around, Maass's source is lawyer Donald Sisson, whose services Europe has retained. Sisson confirms that Europe previously shot a dog in the line of duty, but beyond noting that the animal survived the wound and the deputy wasn't disciplined for his actions, he declines to provide additional information.

However, Sisson shares Europe's account of Ziggy's shooting -- and the tale has little relation to the one related to us by attorney Jennifer Edwards, speaking for the dog's owner, Jeff Fisher.

Edwards says Europe and other deputies burst into Fisher's business after responding to an alarm at an address almost a block away. As Fisher was ordered to the floor at gunpoint, she goes on, Ziggy scooted outside, but was returning in response to Fisher's calls when he was shot to death by Europe.

Ziggy.
Not so, Sisson allows. He says the alarm originated from the same multi-business complex that housed Fisher's operation, and deputies were in the midst of searching the entire thing. He also maintains that Ziggy charged at Europe, barking, growling and snapping his teeth, and continued to pursue him as he backpedaled approximately 25 feet. Fearing he was going to be bitten, he fired twice -- not the three times mentioned by Edwards -- and killed Ziggy.

Look below to see another CBS4 report about the shooting's aftermath -- this one focusing on members of the public attacking Europe's actions on the Adams County Sheriff's Office Facebook page. Note that at this writing, most of those featured in the report are gone, replaced by several criticizing the ACSO for deleting critical comments. That's followed by our previous coverage.

No surprise...those assholes are above the law. They have never given a respect for life in anyway. If they can't ruin someones life they will kill. Does not matter if its a human or dog. Nothing will happen to them. We all know that the owner of this dog is telling the truth. Pigs lie and stand up to protect each other for their packs. I just pray that there is a special place in hell for those able to kill a innocent precious life. I hope he meets the same fate..IT'S CALLED KARMA.

Boulder District Attorney Stan Garnett today announced that Boulder police officers Sam Carter and Brent Curnow were arrested this morning in connection with the Jan. 1 shooting of the Mapleton elk.

The officers are facing felony counts of tampering with physical evidence, attempt to influence a public servant and forgery, as well as misdemeanor charges of unlawful taking of a trophy elk, a Samson law surcharge, killing an elk out of season, use of an electronic device to take an elk, and official misconduct.

The two officers were arrested this morning and released on $20,000 apiece.

you can tell from photos that Ziggy didn't have a vicious bone in his body - it would be sweet if we were telling Adams County and Europe's family "you need to calm down, you can get another communistic, treasonous, unpatriotic, unamerican scumbag piece of shit cop. There seems to be plenty on hand as it is anyway, so just calm down"

If I must tolerate the existence of police as necessary public servants, I'd rather they not be a bunch of half time pussies /half time thugs.

Jonathan, he already killed someone. At a traffic stop. Shouldn't that have been a red flag?

If guns don't kill people, people kill people, then this is a prime example of why some people shouldn't have guns. And maybe the dog did get aggressive but it's a DOG! Clearly with the number of these almost identical incidents happening across the country, there needs to be more training around canines and how to handle aggression, starting with, How Not to Be a Reactionary Trigger-Happy Dog Killer.

Here are the warning signs people! This cop is out of control and needs to be removed from the force immediately and not allowed to have any guns. He is going to kill someone. NO way this guy should be a cop.

Did this guy even read the article? Dogs don't attack running backwards at you, so that means the dog was running away from the cop. Besides, even if they are not humans our dogs cost a lot ( food, housing, and vet). So that alone would make it a property issue not to mention our rights as citizens. So chuntz6, if we allow them to shoot without just cause, they are likely to do the same to you or me. Denver already has a pit bull ban, what happens if they take guns away and dogs? We rely on these half educated, half assed cops to save us? More likely they will get much worse. History alone should tell you that much. Public outcry is necessary! Justified! And beyond called for. They make 'examples' of small time criminals all the time. Why should cops be excluded?

im sorry but animals r not human beings and trying to give them status as such isnt going to happen.  if my dogs run at u and u r armed u have the right to protect urself against them.  dogs do not understand words like ppl do.  they only respond to words they r taught to respond to.  seeing all this hysteria over dogs and elk and pigs is a scary thing.  whats next?  squirrels?  raccoons?  its where ur trying to lead it.

We need armed guards in every backyard.  Plus, it's every dog's right, no DUTY, to exercise their right to conceal-carry.  If more dogs carried, fewer dogs would be shot.

I have Rottie puppies on the way . If & when Mr. Fisher is ready, I'll donate a pup just so long as he can show he is stabilized & situated to care for the dog . There are a cpl additional, very minor details ( no cost ), but the pups are due to be born any day and he is welcome to one,  should he interested .

My heart was absolutely crushed last night while watching the news segment . And yet, we are expected to BAWL over a dead cop & open our savings to their 'temporarily', fatherless children !

If you know Fisher, have him contact me via FaceBook when he's ready . My name is Tyler .

Animals are not people, but they can be the most important thing in a person's life, so to kill one is to do injury to its owner.  How would you like it if someone took the thing you cared most about in the world and destroyed it right in front of you for no good reason?

Also you are right about how dogs don't know words they are not taught like "freeze" or "get on the floor" or "back off", so how does one simply not listening to the cops justify them shooting it?  You treat the ignorant with compassion, not the most harsh punishment one can administer.

Finally, even if you took the fact that it is a living animal that they killed out of it this is still very wrong.  You think it is fine for cops to come into your house and fire their wepons for no good reason destroying your property?

jmunro92
jmunro92

@chunt6 , I sincerely hope you're not an animal owner if you think that a cop has the right to shoot someone's pet for any and every reason, which is what this boils down to.  These dogs are being shot for acting like dogs, that is barking, growling, etc.  This particular dog was checking out a stranger on the premises, and he lost his life because of it.  But as long as it's a cop you're O.K. with it or can anyone shoot your pet and it be all right?  Why is a cop's "life" any more important than anyone else's?  Answer.  It's not.  In fact, with the mentality and caliber of cops now days I would say they are at the bottom of the barrel as far as importance in the human race.

@chunt6 Humans are animals too. Homosapians to be exact. Basically what your saying is if a baby can't tell it's abuser no because it can't speak yet its ok to shoot and kill it. What planet are you on???

Please spay or neuter your pets.  Too many unwanted puppies in the world as it is.  The sad truth is that unwanted puppies get a death sentence.  The world needs more responsible pet owners fixing their pets, not more puppies.

Anarchism is generally defined as a political philosophy which holds the state to be undesirable, unnecessary, or harmful, or, alternatively, as opposing authority or hierarchical organization in the conduct of human relations.

Proponents of anarchism, known as "anarchists", advocate stateless societies based on voluntary associations.

As a subtle and anti-dogmatic philosophy, anarchism draws on many currents of thought and strategy. Anarchism does not offer a fixed body of doctrine from a single particular world view, instead fluxing and flowing as a philosophy.

There are many types and traditions of anarchism, not all of which are mutually exclusive. Anarchist schools of thought can differ fundamentally, supporting anything from extreme individualism to complete collectivism. Strains of anarchism have been divided into the categories of social and individualist anarchism or similar dual classifications.

Anarchism is often considered a radical left-wing ideology, and much of anarchist economics and anarchist legal philosophy reflect anti-statist interpretations of communism, collectivism, syndicalism, or participatory economics. Some individualist anarchists are also socialists or communists while some anarcho-communists are also individualists.

Nothing in there about "bomb throwing".

HTH.

Cognitive_Dissident
Cognitive_Dissident topcommenter

@DonkeyHotay No, not self-serving. Freedom-serving--of all. When someone uses the word "anarchy" or a variant of it, they are speaking of disorder, chaos, or leftist bomb throwers. I'm not a leftist and not a bomb-thrower, and the government causes far more chaos than a free market ever could.

As for "humane" how about as painless as practicable? I'm not interested in animal abuse or torture either. You can see how much "government" does about it, though. LOLz.

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

@Cognitive_Dissident ... being how you have rather peculiar self-serving definitions, such as when you refer to your closeted Anarchistic politics as "principled libertarianism" -- LOL -- one would have to inquire how you define "humane".

Project Prevention  -- formerly Children Requiring a Caring Kommunity or CRACK --   is an American non-profit that pays drug addicts cash for volunteering for long-term birth control including sterilization.

Originally based in California and now based in North Carolina, the organization began operating in the United Kingdom in 2010.

The organization offers $300 (£200 in the UK) to each participant. Barbara Harris founded the organization in 1997 after she and her husband adopted the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth children of a drug-addicted mother.

As of 7 October 2011 the organization had paid 3,848 clients
