Jesse Morreale's First Avenue Hotel slapped with notices to vacate...again

photo(65).JPG
Yes, that's the entrance to El Diablo, the restaurant in the big corner space of the old First Avenue Hotel building -- which was tagged, again, this morning with "Danger" signs and a notice to vacate...immediately. Two city officials, accompanied by a Denver police officer, posted the notices shortly after six this morning, as the kitchen crew was prepping for the day.

The notice to vacate, dated January 4, cites the original notices posted on July 10, when the circa 1906 building was first tagged by the city as an unsafe structure, citing agreed-upon work that had not been completed since the First Avenue Hotel had been given a temporary occupancy permit two years before. El Diablo and its sibling restaurant, Sketch, were closed for weeks before an emergency hearing on July 30 before the Board of Appeals determined that the building could reopen while owner Jesse Morreale worked with the city to determine what work, exactly, was required.

The first deadline set for that agreement was October 1, then October 31, and then the city pushed it back again until December 31. According to Andrea Burns, spokeswoman for the Denver Department of Community Planning, a letter was sent yesterday to Morreale's attorney noting that none of the repairs had been made, and no work plan was in place. That letter did not mention that the building would be slapped with a notice to vacate this morning.

Morreale, who hurried to his building this morning after hearing about the posting, says that he had sent three reports from structural engineers to the city, all verifying that the building is structurally sound. And he promises that El Diablo, which is still dressed up for the holidays, will be open today.

Keep reading for the city's letter to Morreale's attorney.

Here's the January 3 letter from the city to attorney Jack Reutzel:

here is a guy who has done good things for the city, and just seems to be hassled by the city.

Shame on Denver!

Wow I wasn't aware there was, in fact, a movement to keep LoDo out of SoBo? Understandably the pretentious self-loathing hipsters always need something to complain about, but really? Bringing in commerce to a run-down part of town is that bad of a thing? I can bet that the 20 or so roommates that are a part of this exhilarating and socially beneficial movement are feeling proud and relentless about their cause, but the rest of us are probably just going to laugh at you and call you names. Like real adults.

Aside from that pithy confirmation, what we can say is that everyone should feel for the employees. I'm under the impression that a lot of the Morreale family are dicks and probably just want an excuse to feel they're ahead of the game and are the controllers in a masterful plan to save money and 'stick-it-to-the-man'. Quite a few friends of mine are now out of work with very little notice and it's because, from what I've gathered, is a man-child stomping his foot because he didn't get his way. Unfortunate use of a great place and atmosphere. Hopefully someone else moves in and capitalizes on the location. I'd even welcome people wearing Affliction shirts, because, hell - those things cost around 40 bucks a pop - you know they're paying their fair share of sales tax.

Listen guys, regardless of how you feel about the food/service or Jesse there are now around 100 people out of work. Just saying.

If Jesse spent as much time and effort on the food, drink, and ?service? at his joints as he does gaming the system, they might be places worth eating or drinking in.  I predict the same outcome for El Diablo and Sketch as RockBar.

The food and drinks at El Diablo horrible! Unfortunately Sketch (same owners/same building) is a cool place to hang out so it will be sad if Sketch goes down too.

The service was hipster-douchebag horrible, the food is inconsistent in its quality and presentation and the crowd *generally* frequenting the restaurant really needs to separate out the Christian Audigier/Tapout/Affliction shirt wearing dickheads that seem to have sprouted up on SoBo...

When it turned a once cool neighborhood into a cheap version of LoDo, opening the floodgates of Affliction shirt wearing douchebags, fucked up parking for all the people that lived near there, and I moved.

Am I experiencing deja vu  ? Didn't I just recently read this SAME piece ?

Are you trying to tell me the city of Denver has YET to find someone else to pick on and destroy ?

They're slacking ! There remains WAY too many hard working Coloradans',  w/ our tax dollars waiting to them shut down ! How else could 1/2 these fucks explain their jobs ???

@dc_carey78 I'm really aware of that dc_  but if their boss felt as strongly as you do about his employees he might just try to address the issues, instead of using them as pawns to try to gin up sympathy. And if you're working at El Diablo or Sketch and haven't seen the handwriting on the wall for the last 3 or 4 months...well, just sayin.

@Monica Ward Not a rumor he filled Chapter 11 in December, the building was being foreclosed on and set to be auctioned on the 3rd but the filling stopped it.

@DonkeyHotay @RevBF Um...yes? Bars make a lot of money, and most of my coke dealers did too. You do know what commerce is right? Hell maybe I should buy it - I'm not above taking money from strung-out drunks and using it to put my kid through college someday. We should all have such a plan...

@DonkeyHotay  That kind of horrible is an extra special kind of horrible.  Far more horrible than just horrible.
