Video: College women may not know if they'll be raped, could shoot wrong person, says rep

During the last presidential campaign, Republicans were put in an awkward position by Missouri senatorial candidate Todd Akin's comments about "legitimate rape;" remember how Mitt Romney dodged a CBS4 question about it? Now, however, a Colorado Democrat, state rep Joe Salazar, is the person backpedaling from a rape comment (about college women and guns), and Republicans are the ones making hay. Get details and see the video below.

On Friday, Salazar was arguing in favor of HB 1226, a bill to ban guns on college campuses, when he said the following about what he characterized as "gender inequality" at such institutions:

It's why we have call boxes. It's why we have safe zones. That's why we have the whistles, because you just don't know who you're going to be shooting at. And you don't know if you feel like you're going to be raped, or if you feel like someone's been following you around or if you feel like you're in trouble when you may actually not be, that you pop out that gun and you pop...pop a round at somebody.
Here's the video of these comments:

Recognizing an opportunity, the folks at the conservative blog Revealing Politics jumped on these comments. The site's post previews the video via the following lead-in: "Feel like you're going to be raped? Well, maybe you're wrong. So goes the justification for Representative Joe Salazar (D-Thornton) to take a away the right for a woman with a concealed carry permit to defend herself while on a Colorado college campus."

The post adds:

House Bill 13-1226 to prohibit the lawful concealed carry on Colorado college campuses passed the Colorado House of Representatives this morning. Many of the arguments Democrats used to justify the bill included the alcohol and drug use common on campuses coupled with the age and immaturity of average college students. These arguments didn't resonate with many Republican lawmakers and opponents of the bill who cited Colorado's intensive training process for obtaining a concealed carry permit and the state's requirement that permit-holders be 21 years of age, as rebuttal.

Revealing Politics' implication? Dems fear female college students are so jittery -- or perhaps so frequently blitzed -- that they can't be trusted to pack heat.

Salazar quickly attempted to pour cold water on the controversy, telling 9News, "I'm sorry if I offended anyone. That was absolutely not my intention... If anyone thinks I'm not sensitive to the dangers women face, they're wrong." And House Speaker Mark Ferrandino defended his colleague in a statement that reads, ""Whatever his words may have been and however much those words are being taken out of context, he did the right thing to take responsibility.... I was there for the entire debate, and the overall point I understood him to be making is that guns on campus don't mean you're more safe."

HB 1226 passed the House yesterday despite the controversy, and it seems on track to do likewise in the Senate. But Salazar's remarks have certainly fired up the opposition. Take this comment from the Revealing Politics item:

This guy needs to go to te next young lady that has just been violated and say those words to her when the diffence between being raped is the right to concealed carry for protection from a 300 pound brute. This guy is stuck on stupid in a major way.

just your everyday moronic dumbocrat ramblings.....he was probably too stoned to know what he was talking about. If legalizing pot was a republican platform he would have blamed this retarded comment on that

I am 22 years old. I have a concealed carry. I am 5 feet and 100lbs. I am not going to push the button on the call boxes, blow my whistle or rely on the fact I am in a "safe zone". Do you think criminals care about a stupid "safe zone"? They sound like the most illogical thing I have ever heard. Its a safe zone so I can not be armed but that isn't stopping the bad guy or criminal who has little to no regard for any rules or laws in the first place. Safe Zones really only seem safe for the bad guys. I have had to wait for the cops before. I was alone and the house was broken into. I grabbed my shotgun and called the police. They took 20 minutes. Thank god for my shotgun or I wouldnt be here today. Is this serious? Blow my whistle so I dont get raped? No thanks, I will blow your cock off first. OH other than the fact you have to be 21 to have a CCW, you can not be drunk or high. Its a felony to have a sip of a beer and carry.

Salazar is obviously an idiot.  Whistles?  Call boxes?  Safe zones?  Your average Police response is 10 minutes.  Some people say 10 minutres is ok.  BS!  A LOT can happen in 10 minutes.  Ask a lady who has been raped how long 10 minutes is.  Ask a Columbine or Aurora theater survivor how long 10 minutes is.

I'm not saying the answer is for everyone to carry a gun.  Pepper spray can be a beautiful thing if used correctly.  Whatever your position on the 2nd Amendment is, the thought that SOMEBODY might be packing can do a lot to make a would-be rapist think a little more about whether it's worth risking it.

I don't guess Mr. Salazar has a daughter...

Got to love liberal logic! If you hit the wrong person on a liberal college campass, is it really a big lose?

He'll be excused because he's a Democrat. If a Republican said something like that, he'd be drummed out of office.

Dude... Don't be a Neanderthal.  It's bad Karma and bad form to wish ill on someone just because you disagree with their opinion.  Let the other side do that if they wish.

JimTom
JimTom

Where exactly did I wish ill will on someone?

You are correct sir, I may not be able to spell but I can think for myself, and that is proof that I have never been on liberal indoctrination "campus"

Yep, still not sure where I wished ill will on someone.

"If you hit the wrong person on a liberal college campass, is it really a big lose?"  Excuse me if I misunderstood, but it seemed like you were saying that if an armed woman being raped fired at her attacker and "hit the wrong person on a liberal college campus," it would not be tragic (there would be no real loss).

If I understood correctly, that was a terrible thing so say.  If I misunderstood, I apologize.

Yes it does require higher education for technical science oriented professions. If it was limited to learning sciences I wouldn't have a problem. But the fact that ALL students in these indoctrination CAMPuses must take a specific list of social classes to get their degree is what I disagree with. The students are forced to listen to and do work on all sorts of social liberal dribble. I had to pay for this crap as my daughter got her degree. The higher education institution in this country have been taken over by the left in the past 40 years.

@JimTom If you claim to think for yourself, then why have I heard your cute little quips on every conservative radio talk show I've ever listened to?  Guess what, Einstein?  Smokeless powder - invented by Paul Vieille - college-educated.  The people who build the machinery that mass-produce the ammo you buy at Walmart - scientists and engineers - college-educated.  Those nifty alloys, polymers and composites out of which your guns are made - developed by scientists and engineers - college-educated.  The people who come out with better and longer-lasting lubricants and protectants to keep your weapons shiny and functioning - scientists and engineers - college-educated.  Shall I continue?
