Marijuana dispensary to give out high-CBD strain seeds and clones for free

Elite cannabis genetics aren't shared with just anyone who asks for them. Growers pride themselves on holding certain rare strains close -- and dispensaries have been known to hoard them. For these reasons, you don't often see anyone freely distributing clones of hard-to-find strains. So it's surprising (and refreshing) to see a dispensary not only making a rare, medically beneficial strain available to the community, but to do so without charge.

Denver-based Greenwerkz medical marijuana dispensary has been touting R4, its CBD-rich strain, for years now, and with good reason. Unlike its cannabinoid counterpart THC, which is known for the "high" associated with marijuana, CBD has been found to alleviate pain with few to no mind-altering effects. While a high CBD amount for a normal strain would be up to 3 percent by weight, R4 has consistently clocked in at between 14 and 20 percent CBD. Not only that, but it also has ultra-low THC -- at times lower than 1 percent.

But getting the strain -- both in clone and seed form -- comes with stipulations: The genetics can't be resold (only gifted); any strains created using R4 have to be available to Greenwerkz; and, most notably, the finished buds can't be sold for more than $15 an eighth.

"We believe that this strain provides wonderful attributes to both patients and growers," says Kelly Roller, Greenwerkz vice president of cultivation. "We have had many patients who come in just for the R4. It really does provide a lot of patients pain relief without the cerebral/psychoactive 'high' typically associated with cannabis, and we wanted to share that with the community."

Greenwerkz R4 from our July 2011 review.
I checked out Greenwerkz back in July 2011 specifically to see how the already well-known R4 would ease chronic back pain I was experiencing at the time. My take? While the strain isn't the most beautiful belle at the ball, she sure knows how to dance.

"The report from Full Spectrum Labs showed that it was 14.55 percent CBD and less than 1 percent THC, just a hair over what can be found in industrial hemp plants," I wrote. "For all I know, this could be from an industrial hemp plant, as Carstens didn't give any hints to its lineage. It had leafy, underdeveloped-looking buds -- though I've never seen this cut or anything related to it with which I can compare it, so maybe that's just how it grows. Very waxy-feeling, and under the scope you can see globs of plant resin on the teeny, tiny dark-green sugar leaves. It smelled like a hemp shirt when broken up, and the taste wasn't much better. But taste aside, the CBD content is noticeable within five minutes of smoking a hefty bowl. Without a doubt, it helped ease my back pains, especially at night, when lately I've been jolted out of sleep by searing nerve pinches."

Greenwerkz folks ask anyone interested in the strain to contact them at info@greenwerkz.com or stop by their booth at the <em>High Times Cannabis Cup over the 4/20 weekend. They say the strain should be ready to roll out by April.

@ MMJCO. They stole it from one of my best friends and I. We all came up to work together. They stole all of our genetics and locked us out of the warehouse, and sold out to Grenwerks. Want more proof? Ask Kelly or Ryan...see how they react...two faced, lying thieves

It is nice to see we are not the only ones focusing on getting good genetics, including CBD rich strains, out to the masses.

"info@greenwerkz.com" is a bad addy. In addition, greenwerkz gave that addy in their announcement for "media queries", and advised that interested parties go to their booth at the Con.

@soporanos1 off the wall postings with no sense of how to debate and prove what you're writing - you like that style? wow.  moron.

to DonkeyHotay, Sopranos and Threeminusone - show evidence or proof that this genetic was stolen, or you're like every other internet argument - retarded.  Prove it or sit on your couch and continue to post on the internet.  Honestly - how the f*ck does someone "steal" a genetic ?  It's absurd that  you'd even make this accusation.  Prove it - you made the claim, now it's on you to show the evidence.  People are innocent until proof is shown.  You made a  false claim and a harmful accusation, if I was that company, I'd find you.  But they're probably too busy running a business to even pay attention to this.

Donkey - you really do need a hobby. I never post to these boards, but read them and you're always here.  Either  you're home-bound, which I feel bad for you then, or you're fat, lazy and sloth-like... I know you- so I know it's the latter.  I can prove that I know who you are too.... want to find out?

MMJCO
MMJCO

@soporanos1 Yes, proof is actual evidence. Not just posting on the internet.  See, I can say you're a pedophile and like farm animals.  Do I need to prove this or is it true?  Proof that this was your genetic or that they stole - show provenance (documented proof) that you had this genetic.  Otherwise - you're making wrongful claims and just writing whatever you want on the internet - i.e., the comment above about your affinity for farm animals.  Is it true since I wrote it on the internet?

To DonkeyHotay - I get the distinct feeling you're Laura Kriho.  True?  If so, you follow every MJ related news article and post about it due to the fact that you're irrelevant.  Sorry about that for you, but being a head-case that types fast does not make you the authority on all things cannabis related.  Must be nice to have such a high regard for yourself while people who know you and have met you know your're truly irrelevant.

@soporanos1 ... too bad you can't sue them ... since contracts regarding criminal activity are not enforceable in court.

You haven't proven the claim to be false. In fact you've offered no evidence whatsoever that the claim is false.

@MMJCO @soporanos1  Nice retort, frickin retort. Way to go off the deep end. I know what I know. My friend had listed the original genetics below. The mother plant of the r4. Not gonna argue about Semantics with someone who obviously supports the walmart industry of pot growing. Keep smokin your chems and pesticides, and siding with people who are the antithesis of the mmj society .

Regarding link, I'll take that as your admittance that marijuana can be a legitimate option for treating pain.  I know many people benefit from a combination of drugs but that approach didn't work for me.  I for one couldn't handle the side effects of narcotics and I've tried a lot a different prescribed drugs and alternative therapies.  Believe me, I hate being a marijuana user and I hate being lumped in with stoners but marijuana helps me cope with the constant pain more that anything I've been prescribed.

Of course the stoners, pot priests, and hippies are bad for real medical marijuana users like myself.  They are living proof that marijuana has a high potential for abuse, re-affirming the government's position that it belongs in schedule one.  Chronic recreational drug users, including most alcohol users, meet the criteria for drug addiction especially when they claim their drug cures everything...like the alcohol addicts did during alcohol prohibition.  Personally, I don't really care if people want to use marijuana responsibly but I hate drug abusers that use drugs with the intent of becoming impaired...they are the reason people in pain have a difficult time receiving adequate pain treatment and a proper diagnosis from doctors.

@orson

A UCSF study suggests patients with chronic pain may experience greater relief if their doctors add cannabinoids – the main ingredient in cannabis or medical marijuana – to an opiates-only treatment.

The findings, from a small-scale study, also suggest that a combined therapy could result in reduced opiate dosages -

@orson "It is inaccurate to say that narcotics or other drugs are better than marijuana at treating pain or vice versa."

Noted.

So be sure to remind the pro-pot priests that Marijuana is not the cure all and end all medicine for pain, that there are MILLIONS of people in real chronic pain who prefer, choose and need pharmaceutical analgesics to obtain relief.

orson

@DonkeyHotay@orson@MassCitizen

Data from the NIH on degree of pain relief with 0 = no relief and 10 = complete relief

opioids mean 6.27 ± 3.05 on a 0–10 scale, a range from 3.22 to 9.32

marijuana mean 6.62 ± 2.54 on the 0–10 relief scale, a range from 4.08 to 9.16

"Many patients are not finding adequate pain relief from commonly prescribed medications. Alternative therapies should be considered as additional treatment options in this population."

%s

So according to this study, statistically one is not significantly better than the other at treating pain but on a case by case bases that is an entirely different story.
Marijuana is a legitimate pain management alternative to opioids and can be as effective or in many cases more effective at treating pain than opioids.

orson

@DonkeyHotay@orson@MassCitizen

Sure, but that doesn't detract from my statement.   It is inaccurate to say that narcotics or other drugs are better than marijuana at treating pain or vice versa.  It doesn't sound as if you have any first hand experience with treating intractable chronic pain.  It is a fact that for many people, marijuana is an effective pain reliever and has many advantages over narcotics making it preferable. Why do you refuse to admit that marijuana can be a legitimate option for treating pain DH?

orson
orson

@DonkeyHotay @MassCitizen

Better drugs to treat pain? Sure if you enjoy being a nauseous, constipated, irritable zombie, pain free for a short time until tolerance buildup kicks in making pain unmanageable...but at least you'll still have the side effects to distract you from your pain. ? Donkeyhotay, many people with legitimate chronic pain problems prefer marijuana over narcotics for a reason, it is more effective at managing their pain long-term.
