Cody Seastone, bipolar teen, shot by cops after he slashed screen door

Officer-involved shootings are always controversial, in part because they tend to trigger the same basic question: Could the cops have safely taken the suspect into custody using something less than deadly force?

This issue resonates in the matter of Cody Seastone, a sixteen year old diagnosed as bipolar, who was critically wounded as the result of a police shooting even though he was only armed with knives he'd used to damage a screen door. Details, photos and video below.

The info comes to us from 9News, which secured interviews with Janine Pinto, Seastone's mom, and Christine DeLuz, his grandmother, with whom he lives.

According to Pinto, who is disabled, Seastone's condition was serious enough that he was placed into a psychiatric ward for treatment and only released mere weeks ago.

At that time, the family was optimistic that a new medication had evened out his mood swings. But on Monday evening, he spiraled out of control. Pinto says he used knives to slash at walls in the home, and did likewise to the screen door of the home.

"Cody, please knock it off. The cops are going to come," Pinto recalls telling him.

The reply, according to Pinto? "I don't care."

He would soon enough. Denver police did indeed arrive at the scene, with officers drawing their weapons at the sight of the knives.

They ordered Seastone to drop the knives, DeLuz notes, but rather than complying, he actually raised them -- at which point they opened fire.

Was this approach justified? Well, Pinto maintains that Seastone didn't "move menacingly" toward the police -- and she feels confident that he could have been brought down with the use of a Taser or a hit from a rubber bullet, as opposed to the more lethal kind.

The officers are currently on administrative leave, as is the case whenever such an incident takes place, and an investigation is underway to determine if the shooting was justified. In the meantime, the troubled Seastone has a new health crisis with which to deal. He's reportedly at a local hospital in critical but stable condition.

The Denver police department needs to give me a call.  I can help change their culture and teach them how to resolve these matters peacefully.  As police officers, we are tasked with maintaining peace and are responsible for restoring harmony in a violent situation.  Call me chief white.

I think this situation clearly shows the difference between cops and pigs.

Cops would have tased him or used some other way to subdue him, or would have at least tried to open communication with him. Cops are supposed to be trained to know that lethal force is only a last resort.

These pigs flew off the handle, almost killed him, then tried to cover their asses by saying he "advanced" toward them and they felt "threatened" despite all witnesses stating the contrary.

I have respect for law enforcement, but I can distinguish between a good cop and a bad cop easily and it's becoming quite obvious that the motto has changed from "protect and serve" to "suppress and intimidate."  The problem is furthered by the fact that law enforcement and government are, naturally, permanently on eachother's side, and any action by either, no matter how abhorrent, will be backed by the other through whitewashing by the government or through force by the cops. The day that people by and large realize that the system is structured to fuck the greater good is long, long overdue.

Get well soon Cody.

It's always easy to be the Monday morning quarterback. What it comes down to is that we don't have all the facts and that we are not trained police officers who experienced what they experienced that day. Let's leave the question of whether their decision was right or wrong to those who will be investigating it.

I am  so sik -n -tarred of trigger happy cops . So many cases nationwide of 1 man 1 knife shot 100 times opps i thought that was a knife not a cell phone..   most cops are so arrogant because they have a weapon on their side..especially SWAT who will party after a 100 against 1, kill they made. things were a little different at the DAVID KORESHES HOUSE, and i must say i am proud of that compound for holding it's ground... A nation wide revolution is inevitable, they sure want all of the FIRE-POWER they can get to unarm the CITIZENS before things get started.

SORRY little CODY get well soon

I could have gotten them knives away from him with my bare hands and probably not even got a scratch. Guns, billy clubs, tasers and numbers is all these guys know how to use. Hell they make flexible metal cable nets you could have thrown over him to subdue him. Plus, if you are going to shoot and kill someone, why not shoot a tranquilizer dart, which by the way all cops should have in their patrol cars? Of course, they got to shoot little dogs too. But then they make shin guards and other protective clothing that can prevent you from getting bitten, but that would be too sensible. Just shoot them, because soon the cops will be the only ones with the guns. They wish.

How many times have you watched a show where the cops said to put your hands up our behind your head? Isn't it possible that in the heat of the moment, he got confused and as soon as he heard police telling at him did the very thing we've been conditioned by television and movies to do when cops start yelling? This whole thing sounds like the most awful, most one-sided game of Simon Says ever. I for one am way more frightened by cops than I feel protected by them. Tell me you are not and then pay special attention to yourself to see if your assertion is accurate. For the next two weeks or so, drive one mile under the speed limit and see if the sight of a cop car doesn't make you suddenly tap your brake and start checking your dash. Part of what makes them effective is that fear. The problem is they are starting to get off on it and overreact when not given their due. Spend any amount of time following what happens to folks who engage in peaceful protest and it becomes very apparent that the average person is not the one being served and protected. The average person is being kept in line. This kid was just another example of the attitudes our "protectors" have developed toward us.

Marcus, Most officers would have used a non-lethal alternative or talked him into reason. Pigs on the other hand are quick to shoot. There's a difference between having no choice and just doing it.

It's too bad that the police didn't have more information about the boy or the situation so they could have detained him differently. Who called 911?

Marcus, you're an insensitive, unintelligent fool. You have a lot of learning and growing up to do. Fortunately, the world is nicer to assholes like you than you are to people you deem an asshole. An 'asshole' who doesn't follow directions does not deserve to DIE. A KID is INNOCENT because they are a KID. Shame on you for being a coward with no sense of right and wrong. Shame on those pigs for shooting a teenager. Cowards! Shame on those pigs for killing another human because their heart-rate got over 120 BPM. SHAME. This is not serving and protecting. These pigs have no honor. If that teenager had pulled knives on me, and I had shot him, I would be in JAIL. SHAME ON YOU PIGS.

Look.... If a cop is pointing a gun at you... And you have a weapon in your hand.... FUCKING DROP IT!!!!! how many times do you assholes need to be told? I don't think the kid is innocent at all. He uses this diminished capacity excuse cause he has a condition.... Who the fuck doesn't have a condition today. He is a typical manipulative little jerk who thought he was untouchable and he got he bell rang. Bravo to the officers cause if I were in that situation I would have dropped him too!

We are seeing a lot of these 'rush to kill' scenarios by officers. Some are legitimate while others appear unnecessary. Based upon the facts released, partial I'm sure, these officers should be in jail rather than sporting a gun and badge. The next time our LEO's wonder why the public's respect for them is so low perhaps they should look in the mirror.

@Candie Bernard one of my ex were bi polar and once took a knife at me i knew how to disarm some one without hurting them and thats what i did i was taught by a uncle who is a retired police officer simple put they should have used less leather force if they were trained right they could have twords this kid and he is a Kid

@Candie Bernard It's always easy for cops to just kill instead of doing their job. Investigators routinely rubber stamp murders by cops on the job.
