During the early hours of Sunday morning, a particularly brutal crime took place on Capitol Hill.

According to the Denver Police Department, a man was sexually assaulted by not one but two suspects.

The pair managed to get away, but the victim was able to provide investigators with detailed descriptions. See them here, along with the sketches they inspired and a map of the area.

Police say the incident took place at around 12:30 a.m. on March 10. The victim was walking near the intersection of East 13th Avenue and North Emerson Street when he was taken to a nearby location by two men, both of whom sexually assaulted him.

Here's a sketch of the first suspect:

The DPD's description of the suspect reads: "A medium-skin-toned black male in his mid-twenties with a small afro. He was about 6'1" to 6'2" tall, weighing 135 to 140 lbs. He had a noticeable scar over his left eye, through his eyebrow. He was wearing a red shirt with no collar with black lettering on the front. He wore a dark-colored hooded sweat jacket, blue or black jeans and black sneakers. He was also wearing a gold watch with a gold sectioned band on his right arm."

This is an illustration of suspect number two:

The DPD description, which references observations by the victim: "A white male in his mid-twenties, with brownish blonde hair in a short buzz cut. He was 6'1" to 6'2" tall with a very muscular build and weighing about 200 lbs. He was wearing a black, shiny windbreaker-type jacket, dark jeans and Nike high-top tennis shoes. He had a tattoo on his right forearm that he described as letters in a language other than English, but not Chinese. The suspect had a silver ring on one of his fingers that looked like a large class ring. He stated that suspect #2 had a deep voice."

If you recognize either of these suspects, phone Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867). An award of up to $2,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of these two, whose actions have no doubt caused anxiety among residents of an extremely vibrant Denver neighborhood.

so strange to the one who thinks she's the victim here.....

All the more reason, Michael, for the language with this article to read wrong. No one should ever have to suffer the violence of rape, but the statistics in the U.S. are still 90% women and 10% men, which is what makes the tone of this seem so strange.

I would hope that men could understand that so many women have taken offense to the language choices in this article, and the fact that this even made headlines, because rape and the threat of rape are a daily worry and reality in our lives. Men can't understand how that feels. It doesn't diminish the concern for the victim, it is just an acknowledgement of the multitude of victims whose pain was never validated by a public outcry.

hey Lauri, from what I've read, male on male rape is rarely reported, but actually happens a lot--what's unusual about this case is that the victim went to the cops. Statistics show that 56% of rape victims in the military were men.

No, what I'm saying is that these kinds of crimes go unreported every single day, it's become so normal, but when it's a man its apparently a shock.

Not only were they so brazen in their crime. But theres two of them. One sicko can do enough harm but with two of them .

Its because it was out in the open. Very brazen Theres always people on the streets around Capitol Hill. There was the Capitol Hilll rapisrt back in the late 80's (I beleive) . But hee attacked his victims in the buildings. . S

So what you're tellin me Lauri is that if it was a female those phrases would apply?

Lauri Lynnxe Murphy

Is the crime is "so shocking" and "particularly brutal" because it's a man? The thousands and thousands of women who are raped every year are just no big deal or something?

Lauri3

So when a man is raped it's "particularly brutal"?  And when a woman is raped...oh, yeah, it's not usually news.  And of course, usually her fault too, right?  Out late walking wearing clothes and stuff.  How dare her.

Seriously -- this is just bad, lazy, offensive reporting.  It's a terrible thing for anyone to be raped; it shouldn't be thought of as "particularly brutal" just because it was a man.  ALL rapes are "particularly brutal".

PC police out in droves today. Horrible crime, hope they catch the guys.

Notice, there is no mention of what type of clothing the victim was wearing, or if he had been drinking, whether or not he had sufficiently fought back, the number of sexual partners he's had, if he'd behaved in a suggestive manner, or any other of the myriad ways society and the media blame victims when the case involves a woman. I feel terrible for the victim and I'm happy for him that he's getting better treatment and support than female rape victims. Every victim should be treated as such.

First: Being sexually assaulted is awful, and I hope that speak for everyone when I say that I hope this poor guy recovers and gets past this horrible trauma. That said, I live in that area, and I find it particularly peculiar that this is the first time ANY news agency has bothered to put up sketches of suspects in a rape case (at least in my recent memory.)

According to the Denver Police Department Crime Map (available to all online), there were 346 reported rapes in my neighborhood last year, and not one of them made a headline. It is almost as if raping women is well, you know, not a big deal. How is that possible in a City that is so progressive? How are we over looking the need to protect women and men equally?  Why do we continue to let people mill around on our streets looking ominous and dirtying up our fair city? Why is it when I call the police to report these crimes no one ever show the fuck up? Thank you Westword and all other Denver news agency for not letting me know about the 346 women whose lives were destroyed, and will forever deal with the trauma of loosing control of their own bodies. Nice work...

As for gun control. Had this been a man carrying a 38 special, these two dick heads would be lying faceless on the ground. I am getting my permit as soon as possible.

I don't think we should be focusing on how the article was written in reference to the victim's gender. Rape is in my mind probably the most awful thing in the world, regardless of gender

"It's unfortunate he wasn't armed" Yeah, because the guys would have clearly identified themselves as potential rapists to the victim, giving the guy a chance to struggle with his piece for several seconds and finally aim at them with trembling hands. *rolling of eyes* Sorry, gun nutters, but your fantasies almost never play out in real life.

@pjz"because rape and the threat of rape are a daily worry and reality in our lives."

Your God must really hate women, eh?

@madatyou "346 women whose lives were destroyed"

Rape doesn't have to "destroy your life" ... if you don't want it to.

@madatyou "Had this been a man carrying a 38 special,"

It would have been useless against the 10mm Glocks the multiple perps might have been carrying.

@Manny LaRue

So you don't give your wife pepper spray? Teach her nothing about situational awareness?

2 dudes start following you, your hand should already be at the ready, with whatever equalizer that hasn't been taken away yet.

Glad you all can joke about rape.

@DonkeyHotay @Lauri3 Oh yeah, I forgot -- date rape is just a walk in the park, isn't it?

What a bizarre assumption for you to make.  How the hell would you even know?

@DonkeyHotay @Lauri3
That depends on your definition of brutal. Having someone physically penetrate your body without consent is brutal, and you must also consider that the brutality of the emotional trauma inflicted is far worse. All rapes are brutal, some leave more physical wounds, but they all leave deep psychological scarring. No rape should be minimized.

@DonkeyHotay I don't have much energy to answer someone with as little intellect as you show to have, but... Let me help...

I imagine, Don Douche Bag, that you have not been raped. I also imagine you do not carry a gun. I can also imagine, given the aforementioned assumptions, that your opinion on the subject means exactly, well... nothing.

It also seems that your only reason to rebut is for the purpose of being edgy  We get it: you are cool... Go ask you mother, she will tell you how special you are.

Have a nice night.

DonkeyHotay

@Lauri3  ..So how many times have you been date-raped?

How "brutal" was it?

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

@pjz "Having someone physically penetrate your body without consent is brutal"

Even when it isn't brutal? ... such as when a date merely takes advantage of someone's drunken incapacitated state yet engages in soft sex as one would have with a sober consenting date?

@pjz "No rape should be minimized."

You and other hypersensitive Harrietts  minimize them yourself, when you wildly expand the categories of "rape" / "sexual assault" to include things such as CONSENSUAL sex between an otherwise legally aged teenager and their teacher, or mere Peeping Tom activities that don't even involve ANY CONTACT.

@madatyou

The statistics revealed in The Invisible War, which won the audience award at this year's Sundance film festival, make shocking reading:

a female soldier in combat zones is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire,

over 20% of female veterans have been sexually assaulted while serving in the US army,

of 3,192 sexual-assault reports in 2011 only 191 members of the military were convicted at courts martial.

If TRAINED SOLDIERS with MILITARY WEAPONS can't defend themselves against RAPE, how delusional do you have to be to think amateur civilians like you with pea-shooter pistols can do so?

DonkeyHotay
