Cannabis Time Capsule, 1921: Marijuana use worse than opium addiction

colorado cannabis time capsule-thumb-205.jpg
Though cannabis paranoia was alive and well years before this 1921 article was written, marijuana use was still dubbed a "new menace" facing people living along the Mexican border. According to this report, found in the Telluride Daily Journal, pot was thought to be a menace as great as opium. Either they had some really strong herb back in the day that has since disappeared, or (realistically) they were just following the flood of marijuana madness around this time.

The fear of cannabis had apparently spread to the army, which was in charge of the border at the time. Major General Dickman -- who sounds like a real dick, man -- ordered his troops to stop smoking the plant and importing it from across the border.
Dickman said soldiers who smoked the cannabis had "injured their health and rendered themselves unfit for military duty."

Not much has changed in today's army, where even the use of non-psychoactive industrial hemp-based products is banned.

marijuana menace on border.jpg
Most interestingly, the article stands out for it's outlandishly exaggerated and inaccurate information -- like calling it "hash-keesh", saying that native Mexicans smoke it like opium and equating being stoned to being doped up on the poppy.

"In other quarters it is stated that marihuana is more dangerous as a habit-forming drug than morphine and results in even greater deterioration of the moral fiber of the addicts," the article concludes.

Sadly, that doesn't sound too far off from the misinformed opinions of anti-cannabis crusaders and marijuana prohibitionists today.

*** Ethically Challenged McLawyer won't seek permit to hold 4/20 event at CU-Boulder ***

http://www.dailycamera.com/cu-news/ci_22915243/pro-marijuana-lawyer-wont-seek-permit-hold-4

Rob Corry, a Denver attorney who has been s prominent voice for marijuana legalization and the rights of medical marijuana patients, said he and his clients won't apply for a special visitors' permit to hold a 4/20 rally at the University of Colorado after all.

Corry had floated the idea a few weeks ago after the university announced the Boulder campus would again be shut down to outside visitors on April 20, which falls on a Saturday this year.

But Corry said that after consulting with his clients, they have decided it's not worth formalizing a contract or paying to rent out the field for a 30-minute gathering.

Epic McLawyer FAIL!

*** Colorado pot accidents spur call for childproof packaging ***

From early 2005 to late 2009, Children's Hospital Colorado had exactly zero emergency-room visits by kids who had ingested marijuana. In the following two years, when medical marijuana became legal in Colorado and federal officials backed off prosecution, it had 14.

Pioneering studies of ER charts by Colorado doctors show looser pot laws leading to childhood poisonings, often from mistakenly eating tantalizing "edibles" like gummy worms or brownies.

Those doctors are now helping lead the charge for mandatory safety packaging.

I can see why General Dickman didn't want them smoking the stuff. Murder is a real buzz kill.

Cognitive_Dissident

This is only a tad worse than when someone held the DEA chief's feet to the fire, and she kept trying to avoid getting cornered into admitting that pot should not be a schedule two substance because it is not as bad as the other stuff that's schedule two--namely, backing the claim that it's highly addictive, highly harmful, and has no medical purpose, while refusing to come out and say so, because she knows it's false.

Why isn't your Ask a Stupid Stoner column categorized and keyword linked to "marijuana" ?

Are you too embarrassed by the puerile pot punkery you spew in it?

Inquiring minds want to know.

This whole fiasco is almost funny. If it was about almost any other subject i could laugh. But restricting my M.J.and putting my life in jeopardy is no laughing matter. When can we say that a LIE is a LIE and stop this BULL. It's like you have to beg someone to eat your own food at your own table...The CREATOR has given MAN  a blessed thing but we know not...SHIT  you can make paper from it then use the oil from it to light your lamp, and if your sight isn't as good as it used to be, it might get better after using it so you can read what's on the paper while your are wearing clothing and buttering your toast, with attributes of this miracle plant,........

Bottom line, the illegal status of MARIJUANA is one of the most ignorant things lurking in the bowels of our government.....Don't people wonder why 100,000 people of different races, gangs, religions, careers, countries, genders, can get together do (whatever) without any major problems...TRY THAT SHIT WITH GIN OR WHISKEY...  1,000 DEAD PEOPLE with 1,000s injured....

70+ years and Stoners still haven't been able to attain the Political Competency to overturn Pot Prohibition.

The Drunkards were able to repeal alcohol prohibition entirely in only 13 years.

@DonkeyHotay "Significant changes must be made to bring Colorado’s criminal laws in line with Amendment 64, such as removal of criminal penalties for adults age 21+ related to marijuana presently contained in Colorado law. As noted, any deviation or overreach from the parameters of Amendment 64 by an adult age 21+ are now remedied by a civil fine only, no prison, no jails, no 5 probation, no community service, no criminal or punitive sanction other than by monetary fine. The following criminal statutes should be repealed or substantially amended, and removed from the criminal code and placed as civil administrative matters. See C.R.S. § 18-6-401(1)(a)(c)(I) (alleged “child abuse” to grow marijuana in same premises where child resides); C.R.S. § 18-18-406 (marijuana prohibition); C.R.S. § 18-18-406.1 (synthetic marijuana; synthetic alcohol, i.e. non-alcohol beer, is acceptable); C.R.S. 1818-406.2 (synthetic marijuana); C.R.S. § 18-18-406.5 (use of marijuana in detention facility); C.R.S. § 18-18-407 (special offender); C.R.S. §§ 18-18425-430.5 (paraphernalia). 6.) From A64:

(5) Regulation of marijuana.
(a) NOT LATER THAN JULY 1, 2013, THE DEPARTMENT** SHALL ADOPT REGULATIONS NECESSARY FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS SECTION. SUCH REGULATIONS SHALL NOT PROHIBIT THE OPERATION OF MARIJUANA ESTABLISHMENTS, EITHER EXPRESSLY OR THROUGH REGULATIONS THAT MAKE THEIR OPERATION UNREASONABLY IMPRACTICABLE. SUCH REGULATIONS SHALL INCLUDE:

(IX) CIVIL PENALTIES FOR THE FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH REGULATIONS MADE PURSUANT TO THIS SECTION.

...and in one sentence A64 destroys all of the felony offenses you cry about here every day all day for a year.

** = The Department of REVENUE, which was given authority to adopt regulations to implement A64, NOT the Legislature or Governor.
