Photos: Big Blue Bear goes green in weekend vandalism

Big photos below.
If it was intended as an early April Fools' Day joke, it wasn't a very funny one.

On Saturday night, vandals splashed green paint on the Big Blue Bear, the symbolic mascot of the Colorado Convention Center, and of Denver tourism in general -- if you don't count DIA's demon Mustang, that is. See photos and video below.

Whodunit? There have been no claims of responsibility yet, and Denver police haven't made any arrests. Meanwhile, tourist groups aren't overreacting.

If you have any doubts about how big a part the Blue Bear plays in marketing the Convention Center, they'll be dispelled by one look at its Facebook page, which uses these images as profile pics:

The same is true for Visit Denver. Just over a week ago, the tourism organization shared the following photo on its Facebook page:

At this writing, neither organization has posted anything about the vandalism incident, which appears to have involved getting onto the Convention Center's roof and pouring green paint from overhead.

But Denverites certainly noticed the change in color scheme.

What's your take? Consider as you check out the following images, culled from a Fox31 report also seen here.

Looks like these same vandals hit Tony P's building at the corner of 17th and Clarkson with pink and purple paint balloons.  They'll never be caught.

Hey Legen Dairy, so glad you found a way to incorporate hate and bigotry in a completely unrelated topic...we're all so proud of you... and I agree with RJ...really, "KJ's Coffee"!? Really!?

My colorado taxpayer dollars don't go to the big blue bear. Do I care? Eh... Personally its not worth getting worked up over, either paint over it or make it a rainbow bear with a sweet new abstract splatter paint job. #WhoCares?

Keep splashing paint on it until it looks like a Dancing Bear.

They could have at least painted the entire bear green.

Judging by these comments, most Colorado taxpayers DO respect the art.

I'm all for street art, but this is not cool. Doesn't look good at all. plain vandalism.

Didnt it just get repainted? When they catch who did it the courts better make them pay the entire bill to fix it.

Yes and why would someone do this, the paper mâché poop was funny and didnt hurt anything. If you don't like the big blue bear then gtfo out of Denver. Go back to whatever shithole you moved here from and vandalize your piece of shit city presumably somewhere in california with all the queers.

The best public art ever and some fools thought it would be cute to vandalize it. Shame on them.

Heard about it on the radio and am very disappointed that people think it is ok to damage public art.

@Legen Dairy You know you had me up until the queers comment. Completely unnecessary and frankly idiotic on your part. No need to throw such inflammatory language around. Besides I'm sure those "queers" would have done a MUCH better paint job.

@Legen Dairy It was probably one of those hipster, anti-corporate poseurs that hangs out at City O' City.

@Michele Parsons I am very disappointed that people think it is ok to damage anything that's not theirs.
