Kevin Purfield arrested for harassing Aurora theater shooting victims' families

A Portland man has been arrested for harassing the families of victims of the Aurora theater shooting.

Kevin Michael Purfield, 45, is accused of "e-mailing, calling and using social media to contact various family members of victims of the theater shooting," the Portland police say in a statement. "None of the contacts were threatening but were unwanted and annoying, and Purfield would often use vile language. "

This week's cover story, "Sticks and Stones," explains that victims have been harassed by other people, too.

The story profiles 23-year-old Carli Richards, who suffered gunshot wounds in the July 20 shooting at the Century 16 theater in Aurora. Since then, she's been bullied online by people who've called her a liar, an actor and a pawn in a government conspiracy to take away America's guns and to frame suspect James Holmes.

Richards has taken steps to protect herself, but she refuses to hide completely. To disappear "would mean they were somehow justified," she says of the harassers.

The Portland police department's press release about Purfield's arrest doesn't specify who he contacted or what he said. But prosecutors in the Holmes case have acknowledged that the kind of behavior with which Purfield is charged has been a problem. In February, they wrote in a court motion that victims were being harassed by "proponents of purported 'conspiracies,'" some of whom "have even gone so far as to...publicly post maps with the home addresses and phone numbers of victims on various social media sites."

Purfield's Facebook page features two Aurora theater shooting-related posts shared last week. One from April 4 references contacting the families of two of the twelve victims who died in the shooting. It says he spoke with one family member who said he "never saw" his sister's remains and another who said her daughter's coffin "was empty at her funeral." The post says the mother "cried on the phone and asked me 'where are they?'"

A followup post from April 6 adds a reference to two prominent Aurora-area figures, Police Chief Dan Oates and state Senator Morgan Carroll. Like the previous post, it accompanies links to USA Today articles about the theater shooting, complete with photos of Holmes. The second item reads, in part:

I informed Senate Majority Leader Morgan Carroll March 30th she said she left a message with Chief Dan Oates for a status update on the case. Morgan said I was the first person to inform her of this important information.
Purfield has been charged with five counts of telephonic harassment and one count of stalking. His bail is set at $10,000 and he's scheduled to be arraigned today.

Portland Police press release:
Today, Wednesday April 10, 2013, detectives from the Portland Police Bureau arrested 45-year-old Kevin Michael Purfield of Northeast Portland in connection with multiple harassing phone calls and contacts to families of shooting victims from the July 2012 mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado.

Portland Police detectives were contacted in late-February 2013 by the Aurora Police Department and asked to assist in an investigation into unwanted phone calls and contact by Kevin Purfield in Portland.

Purfield was reportedly e-mailing, calling and using social media to contact various family members of victims of the theater shooting. None of the contacts were threatening but were unwanted and annoying and Purfield would often use vile language.

Based on this information, detectives arrested Purfield without incident at Northeast 102nd Avenue and Halsey, near the Gateway Fred Meyer store.

Purfield was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of Telephonic Harassment (5 counts) and Stalking (1 count). Stalking is a Class A Misdemeanor and Telephonic Harassment is a Class B Misdemeanor.

Bail is set at $10,000.

Purfield will be arraigned in Multnomah County court on Thursday April 11, 2013.

The sad thing is this....Mr Purfield knows the deal...and after reading these comments, many of these commenting think that the Aurora shooting was done by Mr Holmes.   This was obviously set up and a staged event.   #WakeUpPeople.

Among other reasons, the 200' blood trail, to the "extra" gasmask, obviously spilled from an unarmored ankle hit by a ricochet, proves the mass shooting in Aurora was a psyop staged hoax, as were the Sikh temple and Sandy Hook - to be used as predicates to disarm the sovereign People.

Wake up Colorado. America could use a little holiness and righteousness on your part. CIA sex slave Obama, Rothschild/Rockefeller, and Satan have us on the Eve of Destruction and you and your children won't be exempt if the same Talmud Khazar/papist faction Our Founder Mr. Jefferson identified as "an engine for enslaving mankind," "the real Anti-Christ" does to us what they succeeded in doing to the Hebrews: virtually exterminate them, other than the Sephardim, and Palestinians (who had already agreed to switch to Caesarism to avoid getting impaled for twice denying Caesar was the Creator) and steal their Bible, language, and religion (with a satanic twist).

Americans must submit only to Truth and Justice. Remember "Annuit Coeptis?" Holmes is innocent and if you allow him to suffer "causeless the curse shall not come" to you all, and to America.

"None of the contacts were threatening but were unwanted and annoying and Purfield would often use vile language."

But he was arrested?  I'm sorry I don't agree with arresting people because they are "annoying" or use "vile language", neither of which is illegal.

And if "annoying" qualifies one for arrest--there are plenty of people at the state Capitol who need arresting.  Can we start with Waller "annoying" cannabis users with the "annoying" unscientific DUI he's resurrected a forth time?

I think the food and drug administration has something to do with it! Along with the person themselves, they have got to take responsibilty!

I can't wrap my head around the thinking of someone who would harass a family that has been through tragedy and loss. It seems we have so many people on the planet that are unbalanced, delusional and have no empathy. If it were just one person you could write it off, but it's many. Puzzled and sad...

@KathleenChippi "Purfield was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of Telephonic Harassment (5 counts) and Stalking (1 count). @DonkeyHotay No... But I have to ask, you are on pretty much every article, ruffling feathers, being a "troll" and talking down to many people... I just gotta ask, do you work?

@michael.roberts @KathleenChippi or not?   as ReadingisFUNdamental has pointed out.  I guess we will see if the charges stick?   "stalking" via the phone or email from another state when there is no threats seems like a hard thing to prove.  will "being annoying" qualify as stalking?

I mean, how do you define harassment? Threats can be specific or implied. "I'll see you in the street" carries the same weight as "I'm gonna whoop your ass" to me.

ahveazey

You conveniently overlooked "annoy" and "alarm" in the statute. I would certainly be alarmed by calls of that nature regardless of whether there was *specific* threat. "Annoy" suggests a repeated pattern of behavior. A repeated pattern of annoying behavior is harrassment. That level of persistence would also imply the threat of escalation. Whether he was specifically threatening me, repeated calls using abusive language (i.e. cussing) I would feel threatened. And if he thinks it's a set-up, he probably doesn't recognize "innocent victims". When people believe in a conspiracy of that magnitude, they tend to think anyone who disagrees with the premise that it is, in fact, a conspiracy is in on it.

@thesaurasaurus@KathleenChippi@michael.roberts  "in a manner intended to harrass and threaten.........."  is hard to prove in the court of law.  And is using cuss words "obscene"?

This guy doesn't seem to be "in a manner intended to harass or threaten....."  IMO.  He seems to be collecting evidence that some type of 'gov. black op' or 'charade' took place and he seems to me to be contacting anyone involved to get their story so he can make his assessment of the situation from another state.  I read this to mean he is after the gov--and any individuals involved with the gov, if in fact this was some type of set up but not harassing the innocent people involved.
