Rangeview High School employee accidentally shoots student in parking lot

Since the horrific 2012 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, pro-gun advocates have suggested that schools would be safer if employees were armed.

Well, here's an anecdote that represents the other side of that argument.

Yesterday afternoon, a worker at Aurora's Rangeview High School accidentally shot a student in the institution's parking lot. What happened?

The man at the center of the incident is said to work at Rangeview but isn't a teacher; he also has a second job as a security officer -- and not for Aurora Public Schools.

About an hour after school ended on Monday, according to the Aurora Police Department, the man offered a ride home to a student -- he may be eighteen, since he's called an "adult male" in the APD release. But they didn't get far.

Investigators say the driver was moving his gun to the glove compartment of his car when his firearm discharged, striking the student in the leg.

The man took the student to a nearby hospital, where he was rushed into surgery to deal with a significant wound, although he's expected to survive.

At this point, it's unclear if the man with the gun will face any charges. But the incident certainly blew up on Twitter. Here are some sample tweets:

That's four ways to put it.

Denver Police Fatally Shoot Suicidal Man -- Win, Win !!

Denver police fatally shot an armed man who was waving a gun in the air and holding it to his head when officers arrived on scene Tuesday evening.

The shooting took place after 6:30 p.m. in the 2600 block of South Federal Boulevard. The man was taken to a local hospital and declared dead there.

"I heard them yelling commands at him, and then I heard a loud 'bang'," said Mike Gorby, a neighborhood resident.

Police said they were called to the scene after 6:30 p.m. after a report of a suicidal person.

Michael Blowe, a witness, captured the incident on video.

"It looked like he was trying to get away," he said.

Police fired beanbags at the man and that is when he turned to run, Blowe said.

"That is when they shot him for real," he said.

Too bad the Student wasn't carrying a concealed weapon ... he could have defended himself from this armed idiot.

They'll most likely transfer him into the classroom to teach .

It was an accident, I didn't mean for you to get pregnant, my penis just discharged when I was attempting to move it.

I wonder if you can avoid child support by saying that, like this guy is trying to avoid criminal charges by saying his magical discharging gun is to blame.

This was bound to happen someday . Each time I think about a school bus driver threatening to 'shoot the bunny', I'm WAITING for something like this to occur .

Bunny fur getting all in the firing pin . It's gotta' get cleaned sometime ....

I'm wondering if the guy wasn't showing the gun to the student when it went off?? Don't the security guards take gun safety classes??? What a foolish guy even my 11 year old knows gun safety.... It's not the gun it's the person who owns the gun that's dangerous...

There is nothing "accidental" about this; it's pure negligence. Firearms safety rules exist for a reason and this moron failed two of them. Plus, taking one idiot's poor judgement and applying it to a national public policy debate is severely fallacious.

@Green_eyes Human beings make mistakes and exercise lack of judgment; and it's not fair that a gun owner's mental lapse can affect a non-gun in such a violent manner.  This man violated the students right to life far more egregiously than a background check, safety class, and registration would violate the 2nd Amendment rights of the gun owner.

American gun violence??? The guy was an idiot.....

@Rich Madison If it were only one example, yes, but unfortunately there are plenty of examples of gun owners affecting non-gun owners with negligence, lack of judgment, or irrational overreaction.

Why should I be comfortable knowing my life is subject to any mental lapse by a gun owner?  Doesn't quite seem fair, does it?

@jmpmk2 @Green_eyes   He was a security guard too so he probably already had the safety classes, background checks, etc etc and it still happened.  Proof these laws will not prevent these situations.
