Tom Tancredo announces he's running for governor...again

Moments ago, during an appearance on Peter Boyles's KHOW talk show (and while surrounded by TV cameras), former Congressman Tom Tancredo announced that he's running for governor...again.

"I announced 5 minutes ago my intention to seek the Republican nomination for Governor of Colorado and look forward to fighting for jobs, small business and our Constitutional freedoms that we hold so dear," Tancredo just posted to his Facebook page. "Game on."

Tancredo's been down this road before, having run unsuccessfully against John Hickenlooper in 2010 under the banner of the Constitution Party because of his antipathy for the official Republican candidate, Dan Maes. But after coming up short, he quickly switched his affiliation back to the GOP -- and while he's likely not the first choice of the party big wigs, he's accustomed to that, too.

To learn more about Tancredo, we present perhaps the most in-depth portrait of him to date -- a 2003 cover story that looks in depth at his quixotic political career.

"The Flag-Bearer: Tom Tancredo is on a crusade to save America -- and he's looking for recruits."
By Michael Roberts
July 3, 2003

On the first weekend of summer, more than twenty members of the Colorado Federation of Republican Women gather in a ballroom at the south-metro Embassy Suites for a day of fun and politics, conservative style.

Tom Tancredo in 2003.
Julie Lewis, the CFRW's District 6 director, is the jubilant mistress of ceremonies, as well as the living embodiment of the affair's Mardi Gras theme. Wearing a jester's hat, plastic beads, green tinsel earrings and oversized dots of rouge on each cheek, she revs up attendees awaiting the arrival of a special guest by leading her charges in a modified game of Survivor. Contestants win by locating everyday items such as lipstick and Kleenex and then hustling back to chairs at the front of the room -- quite a challenge considering the height of the heels several of them are wearing. No one breaks an ankle, but it's touch and go for a while.
The speaker is supposed to show up about the time the Survivor winner is awarded a gold coin redeemable for goods spread across a table set against one side of the room, including what Lewis calls "the coveted Federation cookbook." Unfortunately, he's running late, so Lewis launches into a trivia challenge that would have left Alex Trebek muttering in confusion. Sample questions: In what city was the first Republican women's club founded? What year? And when was the National Federation of Republican Women formed?

"For heaven's sake!" one woman declares.

After about a dozen brainteasers dominated by similar minutiae, Lewis announces, "Those were the easy ones." She's in the midst of proving this assertion when the ballroom's back doors swing open to reveal the man of the hour. He's of modest height, with bright eyes, a prominent sniffer, a grin with more than a hint of goofiness to it, and, on this day, a crimson shirt, casual slacks, a flushed complexion and matted hair courtesy of the black motorcycle helmet he carries in one hand.

Lewis hasn't provided any answers for her quiz yet, but no matter. "Without further ado," she says, "Congressman Tom Tancredo."

As Tancredo hurries to the lectern where Lewis is standing and gives her a hug, the other women, ranging in age from thirty-something to the-sky's-the-limit, don't just politely clap their hands. They eagerly offer a standing ovation, to which the congressman responds with a spontaneous "Oh!" of surprise.

Was Tancredo startled by this outpouring because he's more accustomed to dodging spitballs than basking in adulation? Or was he a bit embarrassed to be treated like a big shot when, in his view, he's just "a kid from North Denver," albeit one who, at age 57, has served in the Colorado Legislature and the federal government and is in his third term as congressman for Colorado's 6th District? Hard to say, but one thing is clear: Despite the hullabaloo that he regularly attracts, despite the anger that he stirs among those who regard him to be wrongheaded and mean-spirited, and despite all the terrible stuff that's been written and reported about him over the years, these women absolutely adore Tom Tancredo.

And he adores them back.

Others are less kindly disposed to Tancredo, thanks largely to his views about illegal immigration, which he sees as a scourge that's capable of sucking this great nation of ours straight into the sewer. How we deal with this situation "won't determine what kind of nation we are," he says. "It will determine if we are a nation."

He's tried many methods to get this message across -- even sarcasm. Speaking in the U.S. House of Representatives June 9, he delivered a special order on immigration reform that began with him urging his fellows to "bring a bill forward in this body that says we will repeal all laws regarding immigration. We will essentially erase our borders. We will eliminate the border patrol, close the stations, the ports of entry, because after all, we cannot control it. And if people want to come to the United States for the most benign or most wonderful reasons, the reasons that we can all applaud, let them come."

The pretend legislation won't be initiated by Tancredo, of course. He thinks uncontrolled immigration saps our resources, artificially lowers wages for American citizens, undermines the rule of law, and does a lot of other bad things he can elaborate upon in detail for anyone with a few hours to spare. Yet what bothers him just as much as these aspects of the immigration predicament is the willingness of too many politicians to ignore them. As he railed at his colleagues from the House floor: "I want to force this Congress, I want to force this nation, I want to force the President of the United States to look at this straight in the eye and say we are going to deal with it one way or the other."

Judging by Michael Roberts purposely unflattering article about Tom Tancredo and the accompanying usual slurs by the illiterati of like mind, Tom Tancredo has really got the democraps and their mindless minions in quite a stir again. And, as usual, this pathetic lot can only sling groundless charges and resort to name calling, which is the mark of someone who has nothing worth saying, because they are incapable of independent thought, as evidenced by sample commnents on this flog, which parrot words, like a child, without really understanding their meanings, nor even caring what they mean.Perhaps that’s the main reason that they never provide any evidence or facts regarding their charges.

Their ire seems to be directed at his standing up for the rule of law; defending the 2nd Amendment; protecting our borders against invading hordes of diseased, illiterate peasants from south of the border, some of whom are terrorists and criminals; lower taxes and less spending of the fruits of our labor; limited government responsible to the people, not Washington dictators and bureaucrats; free enterprise; freedom of association; and Constitutional government, as envisioned and established by the Founding Fathers of our nation, which is based on individual rights and freedoms, not group rights and special privileges dispensed by the whim of tyrants with chips on their shoulders or sanctimonious horse dung from misguided, if not progressively, mentally disordered liberals.I mean, the nerve of this guy (Tancredo), who does he think he is, an old fashioned, patriotic American who stands up for his country and what is right.

The dude is a fascist. He is such an idiot that he doesn't even realize that he is a fascist. I really hope people in this State aren't so jaded and uneducated (not to mention jingoistic and xenophobic) that they even allow this clown to be an official nominee for ANY party.

So Tancredo's running for the nomination of the party he damn near destroyed last time he ran?

Sounds about right.

When is Dan Maes entering the race?

It's about timing and I don't understand why anyone is acting surprised over the Gov's decision .

Tom WILL DO EVERYTHING in his power to ride this through the next election . It will be his #1 distraction from his attempts around topics like immigration, gun control, Colorado prisons, the homeless, 1/3 of Coloradans w/o drivers licenses after smoking a bowl, city police raids where dozens of officers go in 'All Guns Blazing' only to say this crazy guy was the only 'one' to hit anybody, ect ...

May as well and have Carole Chambers run for office if we are going to start talking crazy w/ 'what if's' .

The 'Smiling Dunlap' has won ONLY IF,  the following Gov is NOT  a Republican . Then we remain paying for the 'inevitable' at a cost the state constantly LIES about & the media says not a word .....

Wow! what a character...riding in on the coattails of Hick's haters, what an opportunist! Guess he doesn't have a solid of enough platform of his own, guessing that's why he already lost here, so he's making his re-debut why? because he can be on the tv now...

Tom should wear some big red shoes, fake red nose and a wig so he will look more like the clown that he is.

Listen up Tom. You don't represent the views of the people of Colorado. The demographics and beliefs of the State have changed in the last 15 years and you need to wake up and realize it.

Didn't your family immigrate to the U.S. from Italy?

would a voter approved ballot issue permanently barring someone from running for public office be constitutional (or at least banning the media from airing their comments)?

@yodownmuthalicka The only embarrassment and shame is from the present administration and those who support the fraud.  The good name of Colorado was sullied by the election of Slickenlooper, who takes orders from Washington D.C.

@Marcelino Casias Do you actually know what fascism is, and what example can you provide that shows Tancredo to be a fascist?  Your other terms are in question as well, as would be examples of Tancredo having an alleged irrational fear of outsiders and a warlike foreign policy.  Be specific, if you can.  Any fool can sling unfounded charges, but it takes an honest, disciplined mind to back them up with facts.     En garde!

Nothing like stomping on someone else's freedom of speech, as long as yours remains in tact, ay Jefffrey?  What next, burning him at the stake.  You might want to gaze into your belly button one more time and rethink this one, minus the weed.

@Victoria Dyksterhuis Folkerts "Ack?"  Is that the new leftist rallying cry, short for "He's baaaaaaaack?"    It sounds kinda parrot like, as in "Ack, ack, ack, Tancredo's baaaaaaaack!"

@Mark Paco SloskyThank you, it was an interesting , Obomabot site lambasting Tancredo for speaking his mind.  As is true of any leftist commentary, which uses quotes for the non-thinking faithful, the quotes and the underlying philosophy behind them can easily be defended, unlike the untenable positions of the left, which are based on a symbiotic parasitic/predator mentality that seeks to crush independent thought and values by intimidation, defamation, lies, half-truths, censorship, and brute force when all else fails.  It appeals to gutless sheep and lemmings, thugs, and anyone who wants to rob from his neighbor under the force of government.  It's as old as sin itself, and the most insidious form of slavery, as it has so many willing dupes, who think that they will escape it by joining the attack on the productivity and the confiscation of other’s property and wealth.  As history has repeatedly shown, after the carcass of productivity has been picked clean and all values have been destroyed, the alliance of the predators and parasites will enter their utopian world to fend for themselves in an unforgiving world which requires thought, initiative, personal responsibility, self-reliance, independence, and values.

sstuka88

@Jack Gormley

Don't worry he will, if he runs, which is why you and others on this site are afraid and going through your childish attempts to convince yourselves and others of your ilk and the gullible that the Republican party should nominate a more politically coward (PC) candidate, who doesn't present a clear, philosophical distinction from your Slickenlooper.  And, THAT is the fundamental problem with the Repugnantcan strategists, who pick weak, watered-down candidates who are supposed to appeal to the same fools and parasites who flock to the democrap party like flies on you know what, which, among other reasons, justifies the term "democrap."  By any measure, it's quite a pile.  The all inclusive "big tent" approach, bereft of any values and lack of a clear and distinct philosophical vision and mooring, will self-destruct under its own weight of the disparate crowd of philosophical antagonists who, under the delusional notions of party strategists, think that they can all go skipping off into the sunset happily ever after.  This kind of strategy is at the level of a Rodney King, a repeat felon whose statement of “Can’t we all just get along?”after a chase on an LA freeway, a well-deserved beating, and the usual response of the undermench to riot. Not unlike the present, corrupt administration’s policy of not letting a crisis go to waste, the LA ghetto goons definitely wasted no time in capitalizing on a hyped up media presentation, depicting so-called police brutality of a repeat felon, who was attempting to escape from a crime and endangering the lives of motorists on the freeway.

@Juan_Leg  "Speak English or die?"  That's quite a quantum leap in logic, Juan. Then again, what is one to expect from an uneducated fool, who, on a good day, can only resort to four-letter word name calling.  As previously noted elsewhere, no wonder the political party to which you support is referred to as the democrap party.  You, Juan, along with others of similar dysfunction, are part of the proof in the pudding.  Such a team player!
