Big photos below.
Our Melanie Asmar has been reporting about efforts to attract more moviemakers to Colorado -- and one great selling point is to check out the classics that have been partly filmed here over the years.

Below, count down our ten favorites, as culled from the flicks listed on the FilmInColorado.com website, including vintage posters, the Colorado locations included and the film office's description of each. Check them out here.

Number 10: Thelma & Louise (1991)

Filming Locations: Gateway, Bedrock

Colorado Film Office description: "In this film about friendship and loyalty, Louise (Susan Sarandon) and Thelma (Geena Davis) decide to take a road trip in order to escape from their dull and challenging lives. But when a man threatens to rape Thelma, Louise kills him, and before they know it, the pair find themselves being hunted by the police."

Number 9: WarGames (1983)

wargames.poster.jpg
Filming Location: Colorado Springs -- Cheyenne Mountain Complex

Colorado Film Office description: "A teenager, played by Matthew Broderick, is a computer game afficianado who accidentally taps into a top secret super-computer that controls the U.S nuclear arsenal. The teen becomes involved in a game between the United States and Russia that could lead to World War 3."

Shining was filmed in England and partially in Oregon.

Ice Castles with Robby Benson not because it was a good movie but because I was an extra in the arena scenes.

And so was dumb and dumber. It's the famous bar and famous stairs. Stephen king even stayed at the Hotel for ideas.

The Shining has parts filmed in Colorado at the the Stanley hotel. The bar ad the staircase are directly from the hotel.

John Asbury
John Asbury

They did a remake in the 90's based on the book at The Stanley Hotel.

The Lone Ranger was filmed all around southwest Colorado. Looks pretty good. I knew The Searchers was filmed in Monument Valley, for obvious reasons, but I didn't know it was filmed in Colorado too. Some think it's the best western of all time.

Matt Marshall

"Things to do in Denver When You're Dead" should be on the list, too.

I'll give you "Butch and Sundance" as well as "Thelma and Louise".  However, " The Shining" should lead the list followed closely by "Things to do in Denver when your Dead", "True Grit (John Wayne version) and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade".

Thomas Gallegos

The shining wad filmed in Oregon. Dumb and Dumber should have made it though.

The Unsinkable Molly Brown.  the Laramie Project.  All would have continued just fine if CO hadn't passed Amendment 2 and driven Hollywood away.

@Thomas Gallegos Upon further review, the film was shot in Hertfordshire, England with a few exterior shots of the Timberline Lodge in Mount Hood, Oregon depicting the "Overlook Hotel".  There was a Shining" 1997 mini-series which was filmed in Arvada, Denver and at the Stanley in Estes Park.
