Reader: Transgender girl's parents don't deserve praise for bathroom-access fight

coy.mathis.205x205.jpg
Coy Mathis.
Yesterday, we wrote about the victory scored by Kathryn and Jeremy Mathis when the State of Colorado determined that their daughter, transgender six-year-old Coy Mathis, had been discriminated against when her school prevented her from using the girls' restroom. Our readers responded to this decision with great passion, if not always approval. Here's a note from a reader jeering rather than cheering.

fishingblues writes:

The parents should be put in prison for child abuse. They have systematically ruined this child for life so that they could get attention. (Not to mention what they are doing to their other children.)

How many of you brain dead, "I'm so enlightened" bleeding-heart liberal twits actually believe it is okay to force a baby into a "sexual identity" at the age of 18 months?

Why don't think just open up a "Family Bathroom" as these are in places like malls and other public places. I don't see how it matters where she/he uses the bathroom. Only in public do people worry about where they go to the bathroom, that its separated or a bathroom with one toilet (i.e port-a-pot) where you wait in line. At home, we all use the same bathroom. Abroad, away from the US, overseas you use the same bathroom. Come on people. Its time to move on. If the bathroom has a stall in it with a door that closes, do we really need to worry about where are children are doing their bathroom business? I'm not going to tell any 6 year old where to go to the bathroom, my concern only would be that they GO to the bathroom and not go in their pants.

no that's not correct they offered the child special accommodations. and the parents refused they were worried about him being treated different, yet pissing in a girls bathroom isn't different than all other boys? but he wont be a ridiculed for that... i feel for this boy his parents wnanted a girl thats what i see

Well, Russ has demonstrated via his nonsensical drivel to have the mind of a typical 6-yr old. Just sayin'.

When your "values" and "morals" consist of a not-so-color blind criminal justice system (convicting and condemning of possibly innocent people), slashing funding for even the most basic of public services (while bestowing generous tax credits for already wealthy corporations who rarely -- if at all -- "trickle down" the remnants), and a history of disenfranchisement of specific groups of people, there's something seriously fucked up with ya.

Hmm, it looks like he was banned and/or deleted all of his comments anyway? I appreciate the clarification, I had understood it to be allowing all states to vote on Gay Marriage, though rereading what I wrote now I can see how it reads as if I was saying same sex couples can marry all across the country- that was a wording error on my part completely.

Schittphaiç Magü

No. They got "that way" via a steady diet of high fat, sugary, and excessively salty cuisine, a cultural aversion towards regular exercise, and a disdain towards intellectual enlightenment. That is why Texas ranks at or near the bottom of all health/quality-of-life/income indicators when compared to other states in the Union.

"Special rights" : bigots' code term for rationalizing discriminatory policies.

Puhleeze. You're one just one of them poseurs who barely ventured out of their comfy little suburban San Antonio cul-de-sac. I bet the homies from the west side would be more than willing to teach you a bit about reality....fucking tool.

Schittphaiç Magü
Schittphaiç Magü

You're right. The Western slope, eastern plains, and the counties of Douglas and El Paso provide more than their fair share of homegrown bigots.

Syd, while I generally agree with your overall assessment, your little passage regarding the recent SCOTUS ruling on gay marriage isn't entirely accurate. Yes, they did essentially allow a lower court ruling regarding CA's Prop 8 being unconstitutional (in CA) to stand. However, they did not once declare marriage to be a "fundamental right" for gays so the gay marriage bans in other states are not at all affected. They merely stated that DOMA interfered with the states' authority over marriage. At best, this would be a partial victory for the gay-equality movement. Nevertheless, trying to reason with an unreasonable twit like hit-and-run apologist Sean Miller of Littleton is a futile endeavor.

Schittphaiç Magü

Right, because the alternative is a much "better" solution: forcing this child to use the boys' room and be subjected to ridicule and possibly physical assault by those who still view him as a girl. Derp!

So I suppose the right of each of the little girls to go potty in a boy-free environment is less important than making one confused pre-pubescent child uncomfortable? Sad. Anyone standing up for the young ladies here?? Anyone..?

If you're such a great Texan, shouldn't you support the oil companies? And you might be interested in the concept of "peer reviewed", it makes a difference.

The law disagrees. So does human equality.

OK, here's a thought... ladies, back me up here... I can assure you there are parents on here (I know they're out there I've seen them) who take their OPPOSITE sex child into their bathroom and nobody seems to complain... i.e. at the Rockies games, I have seen mothers take little boys as old as five (to the best of my guestimate) and little girls into the mens even older (likely the whole "safety" issue... I don't know)... So WHY is this any different, other than the admission of his being transgender? NONE!!!!

If my 18 month old daughter picked a pair of pants to wear over a dress, I wouldn't claim she wants to be a boy and demand she gets to use the boys bathroom at her school. Somewhere common sense has gone out the window....

Russ Hollar

This is not a gay/straight issue. This is bad parents and an enabling public. They are willing to sacrifice the security of the ladies room to accommodate one confused brainwashed kid. That's not equality that's special privilege.

Lmao. If I pay a scientist they will say what I want. Whoop dee doo. Haven't oil companies proven that?

Unfortunately gender and sexuality do not work on the binary system, which is been proven by both science and anthropology. Also gender reassignment surgery is not as easy as you might think it is. One must live as the gender with which they identify for a preset period of time, including using the gender-identity bathroom, before they are able to even be a candidate for that surgery. Should you be interested, when I get home from work this evening, I would be happy to send you scientific, peer-reviewed resources about gender nonconforming children and adults. I firmly believe the education reduces prejudice by way of clearing up misunderstandings. One thing that should be of interest to anyone is that studies have shown that gender nonconforming children, like Coy, when they are not accepted, are at a higher risk for abuse of all types including sexual, physical, mental and emotional. They are at heightened risk for suicide, depression and even PTSD. If you look at those numbers, I think that you would also feel that such a small allowance, when it is going to better and/or potentially save the life of a child is a good thing. There are always going to be special interest groups who need to be explicitly given the same rights as everyone else because some people feel that those groups are excluded. Women and minorities had to be specifically given the right to vote as well as the right to own property. Right now gun owners are fighting because they feel that their rights are soon to be taken away. Churches also have special interest in that they are tax-exempt. Gays were just told today that they share the constitutional right to get married. These things that are happening with this child getting permission to use the proper bathroom, as well as gays getting the right to be married, they are not new laws, they are simply interpretations of the current ones. If all men are indeed created equal, then sharing in the rights the rest of us enjoy is not going to hurt us in any possible way.

Russ, you mean the way they are all thought of as assholes across the country? Be proud of that if you want, but seems more embarrassing than anything.

a confused kid that is being brainwashed by his parents is not transgender. Someone that is old enough to know what they want and feel can ask for those rights. Yet still I do not agree with special rights for ANYONE. It is still illegal to go into the wrong bathroom and will continue to be. If a person really feels transgender and is going through gender reassignment I have no problems at all with them going in the wrong bathroom till they get the surgery as I know they have to live as the opposite sex for over a year before the surgery.

You're not trans, you are a bigoted pervert. Anyway, guys have ducked in to the women's haed in an emergency. BFD...I already told you there were stalls with locking doors.

Do you really think the Texas and Texans got the way they are by listening to liberal idiots?

Russ, calling a very little kid "fruity". Showing his true Texan bully colors there. We don't fucking want your Texan values here, you redneck moron!

Pam Stiffler
Pam Stiffler

Why are little boys forced to have no modesty when they poop? THEY should have doors on the stalls, too. The urinal thing, I don't know: it may get more folks in and out quickly, but parents everywhere would prefer they practice their aim on someone else's toilet.

Syd Tastic
Syd Tastic

Indeed I do. However, what confuses me is how allowing a transgendered person the same rights as the rest of us unequal?

Russ Hollar
Russ Hollar

Sounds like special rights for the fruity

Pam Stiffler

1st, here are stalls in the little girls room, 2nd, if somebody's trans, they're not looking at other girls to pillage, they're looking at girls as in the sisterhood of little girls. 3rd, narrow minded twits think everyone else has to be like them 4th, some folks have the guts to stand up for what they know is right, despite crap & persecution. Wow, I'd really want to be someone like them, but I don't think could stand to the ridicule.

I'm still waiting for some nimrod liberal to attempt to explain how it is okay to drive a child's sexual preference at 18 months.

Sean Miller

No I say equal is equal. Special rights given to someone for race, creed or sex is in turn going against equality. Do you not know what the meaning of Equal is?

If we're going to have separate bathrooms by gender then perhaps we should be forced to pay yet another tax for those who physically belong to one and possibly belong to another gender, and while we're at it, how about big and small, fat and skinny, or do I dare say black or white. How far backwards to we need to bend to accomadate the individuals personal choices in public?

downoneasyst
downoneasyst

Men and women yes. Minors are a separate issue, concerning parental rights. The tax issues must also be addressed, as this concerns a publicly and compulsorily funded school. Personally, life involves risk and demands personal responsibiliy. I got picked on in school for having a funny name, small for my age, different color and many other things I wish my parents could've been there for.

@fishingblues ... so you agree that parents shouldn't drive their children toward heterosexuality.

... or worse, drive them toward Pig-Ignorant Superstitious Nonsense i.e. Religion.

fishingblues
fishingblues topcommenter

@DonkeyHotay @fishingblues I agree that parents should not "drive" their children toward anything.  Let the poor kid grow up to make his own choices.  Parents should offer love, comfort, security and guidance, but not indoctrination into the parents psychosis.

fishingblues

@DonkeyHotay @fishingblues It would not disqualify the "MAJORITY", although there are a large number of whack jobs that should not have kids.

As to regulation of procreation, if we simply "fixed" all liberals, think what a wonderful world it would be.

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

@fishingblues "but not indoctrination into the parents psychosis. "

That would disqualify the MAJORITY of Parents.

Perhaps it's time to REGULATE Procreation -- Regulation Works!!
