Marijuana: Does Connecticut pot pioneer Ethan Ruby really own a Colorado dispensary?

Leaving the safely charted waters of the medical marijuana industry in Colorado for the great unknown -- the nascent MMJ industry in Connecticut -- sounds a little crazy, right?

Well, it would be if you owned a medical marijuana business in Colorado -- which is something Ethan Ruby has reportedly been claiming as he attempts to open a grow facility in Watertown, Connecticut under the business name, Theraplant. But his Colorado roots aren't exactly showing at this point.

Ruby told Waterbury's Republican-American newspaper that "Theraplant has had a growing facility in Denver for 3.5 years, which employed 29 people at its peak." The paper reported that "the Denver plant is ceasing production so he can concentrate on the venture in Connecticut."

But according to the Department of Revenue's Daria Serna, "Ethan Ruby is not in the State's DOR system as owning a dispensary in Colorado."

The Theraplant logo as seen on a form Ruby submitted to the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.
Could this just be a glitch in the DOR system? After all, we know this kind of thing happens....

Signs point to no. Ruby told the Boston Globe in an article last October that he is planning to create an organic marijuana distribution center to cater to patients like himself -- and nowhere in the article does it mention Ruby currently owning a dispensary.

And Theraplant? As of this time, we could find no proof it ever existed in Colorado. There are a couple of business listings on sites like lookupbear.com and bizapedia.com, that show a business located in Plantsville referencing that name. The listings, however, are not complete and do not give any information regarding the business aside from its address -- 159 Nunzio Drive. Otherwise, the only other listing for "Theraplant" is for a dietary food supplement by Naturex and the flood of news stories that are claiming its existence.

We haven't been able to reach Ruby at this writing; we will update this post if he responds to Westword's interview requests. So for now, all we can do is speculate as to why he would claim ownership of a business that appears not to exist.

Continue for more about Ruby.

*** Pot Mom Pleads Not Guilty ***

New York -- A suburban New York mom who is accused of running a massive marijuana operation from a warehouse in Queens was arraigned Friday and pleaded not guilty to charges of manufacturing and possessing a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and maintaining a place for manufacturing a controlled substance.

Eariler this year, police followed Andrea Sanderlin, 45, to a warehouse in Queens that was registered in her name. They found two rooms packed with more than 1,000 marijuana plants and large amounts of dried marijuana, along with state-of-the-art lighting, irrigation and ventilation systems to facilitate the hydroponic growing of the plants, according to court documents.

Sanderlin's next court appearance is scheduled for July 15. Her attorneys, Joel and Corey Winograd, requested she be released on bail and said they expect to see her out sometime next week.

"She's entitled to the presumption of innocence and of all other constitutional protections that should be afforded to her," Corey Winograd said. He said the mother of three is looking forward to getting back to her 3-year-old daughter and other children.

In a June statement, Brian Crowell, special agent in charge at the Drug Enforcement Administration, described the case against Sanderlin. "The warehouse was filled with over $3 million worth of hydroponic marijuana and the organization covertly produced 3,000 marijuana plants," he said. When agents raided Sanderlin's home on May 20, they found books on how to grow marijuana and how to launder money, according to the DEA.

Details of the case were first reported by The Smoking Gun website.

WTF??  Regardless of his standing with DoR here in Colorado....Colorado MMJ laws only protect us from WITHIN the boundaries of the state of Colorado.  I seriously doubt another state is gonna allow Colorado law to be honored in their state.  "Yeah marijuana cultivation is illegal in this state, but he is licensed to operate in Colorado so we are gonna allow it".  Really?  That will fly????

For an example, try showing your Red Card to a cop in Kansas or Nebraska and see it that keeps ya outta jail or at least charged with possession.  Try that in Texas or Louisiana and I bet you'll be on death row in no time. :)

@kadargo = reading comprehension FAIL!

The story exposes this Pot Pimp as the LYING FRAUD that he is.

They could simply reuse the Jane Medicals Criminal Indictment -- just change the name to Ethan Ruby, adjust the dates, and BAM!

@DonkeyHotay  Caught me.  I only read the first few paragraphs and figured it was yet another story about someone - yet once again - looking to be protected in another state via Colorado MMJ laws.  My Bad.

ROTFLMAO!

@kadargo "and lots of other people"

Those voices in your head aren't actually "other people"

What makes you think you can act like a RETARD on a Public Forum and not have other readers point out that you're acting like a RETARD on a Public Forum?

Be specific.

@Juan_Leg  Thanks, Buddy.  No worries, but for a while there I was wondering if you and Donkey had become room mates.  Just kidding.  No malice intended.  But, once again, I am going back to keeping my comments to myself.  When Westword wants to hear more from me and lots of other people who have bailed because of Donkey, maybe they will do something about the abuse he is allowed to project.  Have a great day and thanks again!  :)

@Juan_Leg @DonkeyHotay Well, if ya think about it a little further...what difference does it make if this guy is a fraud.  What state is gonna let someone grow cannabis under Colorado's laws?  Laugh all ya want, but there seems to be a lot of people who really think other states are honoring our laws.
