Reader: Motorists can't bitch about cyclists if they break the rules of the road

bike.to.work.day.dickhead.205x205.jpg
Jef Otte's piece about how not to be a dickhead on Bike to Work Day didn't single out drivers for criticism -- but plenty of the dozens of commentators on the post certainly did.

Here's one that stands for many.

SxPxDxCx writes:

If the majority users of the road, cars, followed all the rules of the road motorists might have a legitimate bitch about cyclists. But the last time I checked, when I drove my car into work this morning, they don't. People drive like shit and barely can follow the simple traffic rules or even be bothered to read street signs.

I couldn't agree more with what ac9mayer said. While I want cyclists to have a place to ride that isn't loaded with kids and dogs (like the bike trails), if they want to be considered a "vehicle" then they need to register their bikes. I assume most cyclists also own a car, and if they didn't have current registration on their car, they would be breaking the law. The psycholist we had a confrontation with yesterday blew through two stop signs and then tried to blame us for his poor riding skills and choice to ride on a 2-lane, no bike-lane, rural road. Also if you're going to tout "law" at the driver of the car, be sure you're following the law while on your bike and in YOUR car. I'll bet you're the same lame driver in a car that you are on your bike. Finally, when you whip out your phone to film us and our car, we could do the same to you and show what a fool you are. Oh wait...there is no license plate for the cops to track down. Maybe your special uniform is your license plate and that would be a way to identify you for the tickets you should be receiving in the mail. Remember that no matter what rules of the road you want to use, the car is the bigger "vehicle" and when you choose to be out in public, you must take some responsibility for your own safety. The entitlement mentality is dangerous enough, but is deadly when you apply it to your cycling time. Good luck to all the drivers who have to deal with psycholists...and sorry for the cyclists who have to defend themselves against the poor riders out there.

It is time that bicyclists start to pay their way.  If you ride the streets and highways-get your bike licensed.  I am tired of paying for all the improvements for this privleged class.  They can take a picture of a car license when they feel offended, but we have no way to identify a guy in a speedo on a bike when they ride and break the law.  Time for them to start paying like us car owners have to pay.

to be honest neither knows wtf they are doing in Denver. One of the worst cities I've ever driven in. Neither has the right to bitch about each other until one or the other get's their heads out of their asses

just go the speed limit or stay to the right, please. In this case the right lane would have been much safer for that cyclist but he was just acting entitled. Not a good idea

What he meant is when you're on the road the only person you should look for is you, then the others. It doesn't matter if you're riding a bike, driving your car or walking, if you get hurt by someone else you deserve some of the blame. My uncle got run over by a truck on the job. It sucks to say that but; he deserved it. He didn't pay enough attention, so did the trucker too.

I watch bikers break the rules everyday and kinda sad too because when they do they risk other peoples lives as well!!

Cyclists don't obey rules of the road. When's the last time you saw a cyclist wait at a red light when no one was coming? That's why everyone hates bikers so bad. They feel like they should have all the privileges of cars and not have to obey the same rules. Not to mention slower traffic keep right.

Many cyclists seem to believe that they are above any traffic laws.

As a bicyclist, I try to follow the rules, but a person on a bike needs every advantage possible to avoid being struck by a car.  Including cars that have drivers on their cell phones, not paying attention, and carelessly driving.

From my experience...cyclists. Can't even walk through Bible Park anymore. So aggressive, rude and don't follow the signs that are posted everywhere telling them to yield to pedestrians.

I use hand signals all the time. Also, when I'm making a left turn in an intersection, I try to make eye contact with the driver, but usually I end up waiting quite a while to be acknowledged.

Patrick Solano

I can't remember the last time I saw a cyclist actually use hand signals for turning. They do blow through stop signs and stop lights...almost hit one yesterday! I'm all for biking, but drivers should be on edge once you see a person on a bike, and bicyclists need to start following rules

Bikes were here first. I've been honked at, had objects thrown at me and been run off the road by motorists who were too impatient to wait until they could pass me. If I'm going to be ticketed as a vehicle (which I have), then I should have the right to be on the road.

cyclists are allowed to take up a whole lane, even if there is a bike lane. trust me, most of us would rather stick to where it's safe, but sometimes there are parked cars or road work or debris on the road that you can't see, but will destroy our tires. plus, we're allowed to!

cyclists because they blow through stop signs and lights and expect the right of way.

i agree with you Matt Andrews: i bike full time and even with a comprehensive knowledge and application of road rules, i ride to stay alive. i look for everyone else, because i know they're not looking for me.

Matt Andrews

I think cyclists/motorcycles break laws to stay alive. When commuting on bike, you realize how most drivers are unaware of their actions. With cell phones and texting occupying their attention, just drive. On a bike, my hands are busy, my mind is present . On a bike you are 100% percent aware of the traffic situation. I think the same would go for motorcycles and awareness in traffic.

I think cyclists break the rules of common decency. Wearing a spandex outfit to ride your bike is like wearing a Nascar suit to drive your car.

How much of our roads are subsidized by non-user taxes compared to fuel and other various taxes that apply only to drivers? Should bikers have to pay for liability insurance in case they hit another biker of pedestrian?

do everyone a favor and find a lawbreaker with your body. You know .. just step off the curb.

Swerving in front of a car is illegal. It is blocking traffic. It gets you dead.

Bikes are allowed to travel up to 1/2 block on a sidewalk provided they're not going any faster than 6 MPH or less.

Gersh Avery

That gets people dead. For really stupid reasons.

Gersh Avery

I see this all the time. Some idiot thinks "I have a right" and swerves in front of a car doing 55mph. Most of the time without even looking ..

Gersh Avery

I guess it all depends on if you want to stay alive or win in court later.

It's reality. Stop urging people to fight cars and trucks with bikes.

you are right, my first post explains the last sentence, share the road drivers because more people can get into an accident on bikes than anything.

Cyclists! Especially the ones on the sidewalk! Get off the same sidewalks. If you feel the need to ride a bike in traffic, that's your choice. I think bikes arent meant to travel the same places as cars. Sorry.

I can't remember the last time I saw a car come to a COMPLETE stop at a stop sign, unless they were forced to do so by traffic.

Mark Theguythatcouldfly

Obviously you don't understand the rules of the road very well, and the streets of Denver would be a lot safer if you and people like you would check their attitude, and the laws they are required to follow.

Cyclists don't believe in Stop Signs

Josh Bradley

Cyclists do ime...I see it regularly downtown. Stop light? What stop light? Signal a turn? Impede traffic? Id love to see cops in the rural areas give cyclists tickets for impeding traffic by going too slow...especially on narrow, twisty roads with no shoulder and blind corners. If you can't keep up with vehicles gtfo.

Bicyclists are riding for free. That needs to end.

So I take it things are perfect where you're from Deanna? People are likely to break the law. Doesn't really matter their mode of transport. More people are riding bikes and our infrastructure isn't designed for it.

If you guys in Colorado got over yourselves and realized you're not saving lives with your phones plastered to your heads or in your laps texting, then it might not be so dangerous to drive, let alone ride a bike. If you learned how to pay attention, folks, we'd all be able to live and ride together.

Syd Tastic

You wouldn't know it looking at our sidewalks, but they're supposed to be on the road.

Syd Tastic

I don't drive often enough to know about drivers, but I am sick and tired of cyclists on the sidewalk-- It's illegal! And they act like pedestrians are in their way.

Gary Manning

I used to live in Colorado and the sidewalks are narrow, so how are cyclist going to pass pedestrians with a narrow sidewalk? Example: Sheridan Blvd, W. 38th Ave. those are narrow sidewalks compared to what other places I've been.

It is illegal and very dangerous to block traffic with your moving body.

When you argue with hardware, guess who gets to be dead. After you get dead from being right on the road, your survivors can sue.

I think if cyclists want to use the road, they should do the fucking speed limit or get the fuck off of the road!!! Edit: Cyclists are the biggest assholes these days and they're fucking everywhere!
