Readers: Peter Boyles will be missed versus Peter Boyles sucks

Peter Boyles.
Our post about Peter Boyles's dismissal from KHOW after an incident involving his longtime producer, Greg Hollenback, brought out plenty of fans who are lamenting the move by Clear Channel, KHOW's corporate owner. In contrast, those who dislike Boyles aren't shedding any tears. Here's a commentary point-counterpoint.

KHOW will realize the errors of their ways.

I've listened to Peter for about 40 or more years. I like that he is a very learned man and extremely informed about most topics on his radio show. If he doesn't know about a certain topic, he would be the first to tell you that he is uninformed.

GOODBYE KHOW.....Pete, I hope you catch on with another station and SMOKE the H*LL out of KHOW!

John Martinez writes:

Go away Peter Boyles, go far, far away. And take Limbaugh with you.

Boyles' fan base has nothing to fear. Right-wing blogger Ross Kaminski seems to be filling the void nicely and feeding the Peterheads the race-baiting they crave. This morning, for instance, he declared that even though discrimination against racial minorities in "public accommodations" such as hotels and restaurants is prohibited by law, he -- Kaminski -- doesn't think there should be such anti-discrimination laws at all. In Kaminski's world, therefore, Lester Maddox should have been able to refuse to serve blacks at his Atlanta lunch counter and Longmont businesses' "White Trade Only" signs in the '30s through the '50s were just fine too. Oh, but don't use the "R" word, kids. Why, shucks, it ain't racism, it's just "freedom of association" -- just like the Jim Crow-loving Southern Dixiecrats used to say it was. Boyles' white sheet seems to fit Kaminski well, and the gun shops, DUI lawyers, tinnitis faith-healers and male-enhancement peddlers who advertise on KHOW can rest assured that the core audience of 55-plus blue-collar white males are still listening rabidly while they polish their .38-caliber substitute penises and watch for black helicopters.

I listened to Pete for the better part of the 8 years I lived in Colorado and continued listening until his departure. He was, in essence, the history teacher I never paid attention to in high school. There was a degree of critical thinking that he expected of his callers and his audience. I connected with his stories of growing up in a working class family in Pittsburgh. The one aspect I most enjoyed is that he always seemed to have more questions than answers, his two most frequent being "What are we watching here?" and "How does this all end?" I really hope his voice emerges again. It's needed now, in this time, more than ever, but I won't hold it against him if he chooses private life and riding over radio. He was no Limbaugh or Hannity or Beck. And that was a good thing.

I'm on both sides.   I'll miss Pete's commentary on literature, history, local politics and pop culture.   I'll not miss his recently increased level of hostility and lack of reasonable debate with those that disagree with him.   I found it increasingly difficult to listen in the past year.

The irony of the situation is that Boyles invited the media elite of Channel 9 on to his show and they ratted him out and got him fired.

Whether he was a testosterone soaked bully or a civic activist for the little guy-he was never boring like the rest of the line up at KHOW.  I wonder how losing Boyles' 100000+ a week listeners will hit KHOW's bottom line?

Does anyone have a recording of what went down?  Would love to hear it, you know if this was anyone Pete would have a copy playin, lets hear it.  KHOW pulled it so you cant try to listen there, what is there to hide?

@madmex72 The presence of 9News definitely seemed to ratchet up the situation. Thanks for the post, madmex72.
