Peter Boyles begins another week off the air, radio silence about his fate

Peter Boyles.
Update: Peter Boyles has reportedly been fired by KHOW. To read our latest coverage, click here.

Original post: Last week, we noted that KHOW talk-show host Peter Boyles remained off the air following an incident with his longtime producer, Greg Hollenback, and his future was uncertain.

More than a week later, that's still the case -- and the station isn't talking about his continuing absence either on the air or behind the scenes.

This radio silence is only increasing the frustration of Boyles's fans -- and inspiring plenty of conspiracy theories.

As we've reported, the incident took place at around 8 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, amid a program during which former Congressman Tom Tancredo announced that he's running for governor. A 9News crew was on hand for Tancredo's statement, and the station has reported that after the argument, Hollenback was seen with red marks on his neck.

greg.hollenbeck.jpg
Greg Hollenback.
What happened? Sources tell us that after a high-volume argument, Boyles yanked Hollenback toward him by a lanyard, causing the aforementioned red marks. In response to this action, Hollenback is said to have thrown his hat at Boyles.

The program continued afterward without further problems -- but the dust-up was reported to KHOW management, with overseers from Clear Channel, the station's corporate owner, getting involved shortly thereafter.

Since then, Boyles has not been heard on KHOW, and neither he nor Hollenback has commented, Likewise, station spokespeople have declined to detail the situation, describing it as a personnel matter.

Today, KHOW's website prominently features Boyles, who's said to be "on the air" at this writing. But no: The actual person behind the microphone is frequent fill-in commentator Jon Caldara, who, when we tuned in a short time ago, was yapping about actress Angelina Jolie's first public appearance since undergoing a double mastectomy.

Unless we've missed it, no KHOW personality has talked about the Boyles matter during a broadcast in the week and a half after it took place. Meanwhile, we're receiving a steady stream of e-mails and Facebook messages from his loyal listeners complaining about the dearth of information and positing hypotheses about why he hasn't made a return. Among them: The powers that be are trumping up the Boyles-Hollenback altercation in order to remove a prominent thorn from their side.

Expect such speculation to gather steam the longer KHOW keeps loyalists in the dark -- and the longer Boyles stays off the air.

I’ve been listening to Peter Boyles since the mid 90’s when I started at MSCD and after being Honorably Discharged from the US Army’s Medical Corps (not “Corpse” Mr. POTUS). Pete’s no slouch. Being well read and educated is the main reason I enjoy his early daily oratories on issues of not only CO highlights but national and international interests of contemporary importance that our youthful illiterates need to learn. Pete’s not afraid to tackle things that other radio talk show presenters cower and cringe to explore in fear to hurt the delicate feelings of our new residents from the: "Eureka...I have found it!" state. Thank goodness he’s been permitted by KHOW to let the state senate and house know just how many of us feel towards our state government’s restrictive and limited legislative access to the voters. We are surrounded by gutless representatives who railroad down our throats foreign ideologies that condition our children to be frightened of their own shadows and never taught honest history. Peter is a good crusader for the common man and woman and is truly enjoyable to listen to and have the opportunity for the exchange of intelligent and passionate feedback combined to start the day with factual thought at Colorado’s beautiful mountainous elevations. Let’s hope some mountain man understanding can quickly occur and the continuation of Pete’s Show for all of his loyal followers may persist; remember that everyday above ground is a good one folks! (All is not lost because we do have Michael Brown, The p.m. ‘King of Swing’ and Caldara, who can pull a good show off on occasion J Just winding you up John, you’re a Trooper Buddy! Be safe all.

I'll sum up why I listened to Mr Boyles, no one I mean no one in radio incorporates emails into his program.   He makes you part of the conversation if you want to be part of it.  I never called him because I knew we had sharp disagreements on the guilt of John and Patsy Ramsey, Obama, same-sex marriage, and other issues. I was with him to a point on illegal immigration, but differed from his solution.  But he was always about good radio.

If this was a lanyard yanking, hat throwing incident only, then it is clear that Clear Channel has become effeminate.  Men from these generations, physical force is a way to argue. If Pete was escalating, then maybe it is time for him to step down, but it could have been done more professionally than it has been.`

VoiceOfReason

It would be interesting to know how Greg Hollenbeck feels about the incident.  Did he feel threatened by the lanyard-yanking?  Does he still consider Boyles to be a friend?  If the answers are "No" and "Yes," KHOW is probably using this as an excuse to fire Boyles against Hollenbeck's wishes.

Reflecting on the timeline of this bizarre event.  Wasn't it the very same day that Tancredo announced he is running for Gov? For far too many years I've listened to this old bird sing and his morning show had so many dolts scream at him or try to push Peters buttons with no success, now here is this veiled rumor (aka "story") of his going POP on the sheik. WTF?  Really? Okay, so what was the hot button here?  Was Clear Channel telling Peter via the sheik that he could not run on the air with Tancredo politics like he did last time?  Maybe, anybody heard a peep from Tancredo?  Nada.  As Peter said "what are we watching, what are we hearing"?  What is the real story.  We will all be watching and listening because Peter taught his listeners to read and be aware, taking him off the air doesn't change what we have learned.  Really all the aggravation Peter put up with over the years who needs it, who would ever want it?  He walked that long path so well.  Thanks Peter where ever you are!

Wow.  There has to be more to it, such as a planned booting and they saw an opportunity.

This is truly sad.  Peter is so well read and has such a pragmatic view of issues, with rare partisan leanings, in a world of rationalization and politics as the new religion.

I was honored and privileged to get to listen to Peter and some of the excellent guests and reoccurring callers he would have; Andrew Gause on finance; Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch; Hugh the attorney(caller).

True wisdom in a world that is just getting dumber and dumber. It is a few people relatively actually making smart phones and a billion ignorant monkeys pushing the shiny object.  Keep on tweeting ya chimps.

Curious, what happened to Greg Hollenbeck? HR does not take kindly to physical altercations between employees...so if this was physical between both, and not a set up, did Greg get canned too???

Boondocker
Boondocker

Yep, I was wrong. Talk hosts are, first and foremost, entertainers -- and I wrongly figured Boyles' increasing espousal of the violent and visceral was part of a corporate-directed act to secure a loyal albeit aging cadre of old white males who feel less and less empowered and relevant as they see the old, comfortable "Leave It to Beaver" world about to disappear via the inexorable force of changing demographics. I didn't realize how much he had come to actually getting lost in the part. It is truly sad to see a once-relevant, introspective and literate force in Denver radio decline to this and end this way.

Unbelievable..he is actually gone..people of Denver and all over including me here in Nebraska, do not realize what we have lost. Peter gave us information, no one else would touch, and he was right most of the time, he made me laugh, and sometimes get really pissed off, at him...because there were things I did not agree with him about, that is what made him a top of the line DJ...and man.

The way this was handled, not letting any listeners know what was going on, hearing the whole story, not just what some TV stations decided what we needed to hear...not treating us like imbeciles and not letting the public decide who they wanted to believe on the events that unraveled..both sides of the story, and then just making Peter disappear in the night...this is so wrong on so many counts....all of us out here have lost a devoted friend and in the long run, the station will pay for it...this was a way to be rid of a burr in their butt, that spoke his mind, and riled the high mucky mucks that tried to be so politically correct, our dials will be turning to other stations, and Peter will be back on one of them, mark my words, and Clear Channel with be left wondering what the hell they just did...

If Peter physically attacked another employee - the natural HR thing to do is fire him.  Giving him a "last show" would've meant keeping him employed actively after he physically attacked his producer.  Really?

I would suspect if you were attacked at work, you would want that co-worker fired, yes?

Regardless of his politics, his popularity, or otherwise, ClearChannel/KHOW would've been taking an insanely high risk of liability to further the employment of someone so unstable that they cannot control their anger while at the work place.   Workplace violence in the world today is a zero-tolerance topic.  Red marks around his producer's neck?  I would've fired him too.

It's time for it to end for Petey baby.  He has had a great run in Denver radio and deserves all his money and endorsements.  C'mon, has he ever paid for a lift ticket at Winter Park, has he ever had to go into his own pockets for a new chopper, a table at any restaurant on the advertisers list, a new bobble for the new gal pal at the jewelry store.  It's called trade outs, and Pete has done really well.  Some blue-collar conservatives need a voice, and too bad that ol' Petey wasn't going to be it.  He rails against the stock market but gladly takes money from Presidential brokerage and before that Mikey Spears.  He railed against corporate America but regularly cashed a check from one of the largest media conglomerates in the Country.

Lately his waving the white flag for this country was the most disappointing. Pete doesn't have to worry at all.  None of what is coming our way courtesy of the DC mob will ever affect Pete in any way.  And he could rail at George Bush, Obama, or whoever from the comfy position of having 'made it' in America.  All so he can say what, that he told us so?  He's set for life and don't get me wrong, he deserves his reputation and accomplishments.  His most unfortunate and damaging advice to us was - "...just hide and watch..."  Don't do anything, or get active, just sit back, read the spots, head for Winter Park or the chopper shop, and 'hide and watch.'  Conservatives and even libertarians can no longer just hide and watch.  And we, sadly, didn't need Pete to lead us into the shadows.  He's smart, occasionally funny and I like him.  He'll be on satellite radio, write some books, and like all fired 'talkers' do - double his income in a few short months.  It was starting to sound like he was done anyway. Let us not forget the bottom line purpose of any radio broadcast, deliver the ears of the listeners to the advertisers - nothing more, nothing less. Pete did that, and did it pretty well on and off for years.  He deserves his bucks and his life.  He did really really for himself.  Congrats Pete and farewell.

unbelievable .. he's been a Denver institution for decades .. the least they could have done would be to let him host one more show announcing his departure .. this is a sad way for someone to end their career and it really leaves listeners in a void.  suck on it KHOW.   this was handled very poorly and it's going to kill your ratings in that time slot .. for a long, long time.

9News just reported that Boyles is out at KHOW.  I didn't agree with Boyles' politics, but it made for interesting morning radio.  No reason for me to listen to KHOW now.

Boondocker

Sorry, but I'm still not buying it. Until they take his name off the opening sounders, I still believe Peter is on a 2-week vacation he planned all along, and this all is an elaborate piece of pre-scripted buzz generation on which the media has dutifully bitten. You'll note that they waited until a 9News crew was in the studio as convenient witnesses to the play-acted dust-up. Greg's red marks? Hickeys from his girlfriend. Arbitron's Portable People Meter survey period runs May 24 to June 20, and Clear Channel-Denver brass needed a bit of boost for a show and station whose audience is aging and shrinking - but now who tunes in every day to see if Pete's back yet. The show cannot survive on spots for gun sellers, male-enhancement, hearing-loss and DUI lawyers alone, so goosing the Arbs is in order. This kind of gimmick is as old as radio itself.

What upsets me is that no one knows anything.

Is there no one who can listen in on phone calls anymore?

Is there no one who can crack email systems?

I'd still like to see a Boyles/Martino show. Through much of last year, they stayed on air together for the first 10 or 15 minutes of Tom's show, and it was the best 10 or 15 minutes of either of their shows (and I like both). That stopped pretty abruptly one day after a minor blowup between Pete and Tom. I also think Tom felt like his show was being intruded upon, and maybe it was.

Personality and interaction between hosts is HUGE for the station, and that's what keeps people listening. A tape delay of Glenn Beck does nothing for anyone.

I am sure Jon Caldera is a nice man, and dear heavens...he is boring. I do not care that Miss Jolie made a personal decision...albeit a good decision...I left, as I suspect a number of other people did. Cleaning house was better than this morning. Actually, I went back to bed...sorry Mr Caldera. Please, what ever the problem is, get it solved...and get Peter back on the air...I have a suspicion this is an excuse to get him off the air period..He and Greg are a pair...and if they get the problem taken care of...that should be good enough for the higher ups.

If they do not act soon, and get Peter back on the waves...your radio station will go into the tank...we need Pete..he is the only one to keep us up on what is going on...and maybe that is the real problem...truth hurts

if you listen to the 8am 5/23 podcast on khow.com, when Tancredo comes on to announce, the first thing he says is "ALL THIS just because I'm going to announce....", and Boyles seems a bit agitated....still hope they get it worked out....Boyles is a great and needed voice in CO

Jon Caldera is a terrific person who has a lot to say. It's unfortunate that he says it in a manner  that's akin to a person reading a story to children.

If not Peter then Craig Silverman please...Dan Caplis is insufferable.

Thanks for staying on this, Michael. I'm not part of the Boyles-"borg," but I've listened to him for the better part of 40 years, going back to his goofy days with Bob Lee. While he sometimes drives me nuts when he perseverates on something like the Obama birth issue, he is almost always interesting; highly literate and knowledgeable about things as divergent as rock & roll music, the Mafia and WWII history; and like a dog on a bone when it comes to unearthing local political scandals.

If, as you posit, Clear Channel sees this as an opportunity to "remove a prominent thorn from their side," they will also be removing me as a listener. While I can take Caldara and Kaminski in small doses, I would never make a point of getting up early in the morning to tune them in. If Boyles goes somewhere else, I'll certainly follow him; as will, I imagine, many of his sponsors.

@whosear2  Oh please, what is this about  "men from this generation" I am from Pete's generation and have grown up and quit using physical force back in high school. I would bet that Boyles has some real issues that have been tolerated and covered up because of his popularity. But Clear Channel finally had to do something as another news source was there to see it.

I used to enjoy Peter in the early days, but he really got on a kick about trashing anything and everything in the city of Denver. Continually smearing Pena, Webb, Hickenlooper and Hancock,  and any other Democrat that came along.  He was incessant about criticizing DIA and it has turned out to be one of the best things for the entire Metro area in years.

Gee Zin Box, That's what bugs you! We all care about Peter Boyles because that's where we learn about the agendas around us.

KHOW is history, Boyles was the only reason to liston, I can get Beck in the afternoon on 600 AM & 650 AM. Sean Hanity is on 600 & 650 both! It's Boyles we can't get anywhere else, and trust me, we'll all be watching where he ends up, hopefully on KLZ 560 AM since they have a strong signal!
