Reader: Should we ban all upsetting books -- starting with the Bible?

the.bluest.eye.cover.205x205.jpg
We recently posted about Adams County parents petitioning the school board to remove Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye and "inappropriate" books from the high school reading list. The parents say they're not promoting censorship, but many readers weren't so sure, including this one, who expanded on what he sees as the petition's theme.

BackOffImStarving writes:

Uh oh, a book with something unpleasant in it. Might as well ban The Pearl, Native Son, Red Badge of Courage, Great Gatsby, Scarlet Letter, Brave New World, To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, Flowers for Algernon, Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm, Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer, 20,000 Leagues, The Crucible, The Glass Menagerie, etc. Actually, the Bible, to which some of these overly-sensitive pukes probably cling, has more rape, torture, infanticide, war, and witchcraft than the majority of the books I just listed. Ban it. Come to think of it, I think there might some scary images in one or two of the Bernstein Bears books. We should probably ban them, too. Maybe a good old-fashioned book burning would save us some time and money. I'll get the marshmallows.

The Bible is one of the most controversial, profane, and damaging texts in the world. And everyone should have the opportunity to read it. Censorship is the construct of weak minds and should not be entertained by those of us who wish to foster critical thought.

Here is an idea. Don't ban anything.

Let's not ban the whole library.  Further, no book has been banned in the USA for about half a century.  Keeping kids from sexually inappropriate material in public schools is not banning nor is it censorship.  Further, the US Supreme Court says it is perfectly legal and can be done forthwith.  Even the American Library Association said if a book does not meet a school's selection policy, "get it out of there."

And instead of "overly-sensitive pukes," which is an ad hominem effort to make the parents the target instead of a school's selection of sexually inappropriate material, the reality is that the large majority of people oppose sexually explicit materials in public schools.  It's just common sense, and I'll bet it's the community standard.

@BackOffImStarving The ironic thing is you constantly push your beliefs AND feminist values on me!

@safelibraries Ah, an overly-sensitive puke.

Here's some incest for you:

Genesis 19:34-36   The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.”So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.

That seems pretty sexually explicit.  I mean, daughters (multiple) having sex with an old man?  If I'm not mistaken, there are laws against incest.  Yet, if someone were to suggest banning the Bible from the classroom, you'd shit yourself and whine about being persecuted for your beliefs.

Here's some prostitution with a little bait 'n' switch:

Genesis 29:23-26 And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her. And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid. And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me? And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.

Here's an account of a Biblical carpet munching:

Song of Solomon 4:16 Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out. Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits.

Spare me your morally-superior drivel.

@CloudGang And WTF does "feminist values" have to do with anything?  Are we now blaming the current state of affairs on, to paraphrase Lewis Black, God looking down into America's kitchens on 9/10/2001 and noticing that the spice rack was in disarray and the stew wasn't on the stove?  Is being able to talk circles around you now associated with having a vagina?

@CloudGang I don't push anything on you.  I call you out for being a whiny, hypocritical douchebag, after which I sit back and let you complete the task of painting yourself as a mentally-challenged individual.  Ironic, ain't it?

@BackOffImStarving Neither the issue nor my comments have anything to do with morals ("Spare me your morally-superior drivel").  Very reliable sources keep children from inappropriate material, as I mentioned above, including: the US Supreme Court, the American Library Association, a reliable poll showing the large majority of people oppose sexually explicit books in public schools, let alone common sense.

You go on and scream censorship all you want, but it has nothing to do with the issue at all.  As Dan Gerstein said, "The ... elites have convinced themselves that they are taking a stand against cultural tyranny.  ....  [T]he reality is that it is those who cry 'Censorship!' the loudest who are the ones trying to stifle speech and force their moral world-view on others."

You two would be like old friends if ever were to meet . Personal shots against one another are pointless and only delay the inevitable . ( The time you realize you are both on the same side.....)

@BackOffImStarving @CloudGang Did you vote yes? Either way I choose not to contribute to it, but you do!

As for feminist values ...... Here is one, does this sound familiar?

Replacing self control with government control- Feminists don’t control themselves but want to control others.  They equate total lack of self restraint with self expression.  (Never mind that being an asshole is a poor way to express ones individuality.) Because feminists don’t control themselves or their actions, they assume that everyone is the same way.  They believe that, to restore order, we need a large government (i.e. Daddy) to control all of us.

@BackOffImStarving @CloudGang  "I don't push anything on you."

what do you call amendment 64? I thought in America I was free to choose? I want EQUALITY and you encourage preferential equality. Please keep the bashing coming, it seems to be the only way you can "one-upmanship " me.

"Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law', because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual." and "No man has a natural right to commit aggression on the equal rights of another, and this is all from which the laws ought to restrain him." (Thomas Jefferson to Francis Gilmer, 1816)

@safelibraries I'm still waiting for you to address my questions about the "reliable" polls you brought up.  Could you provide me with a link to the published material, or would that give you too much of a headache?

Methinks your kids might be too stupid and sensitive to understand higher reading levels, so is all of this even necessary?

@BackOffImStarving You are so busy attacking people left and right that you don't even know or apparently care for anything having to do with truth/accuracy whatsoever.  You can't even get the facts straight.  Not even here, not even in your attacks that you likely think make you so clever.  There you are attacking me for "my" American Liberty Association.  Liberty?  Did I mention the American Liberty Association?  No.  I mentioned the American Library Association.  Library, not Liberty.  You are so filled with hate, you can't even attack straight.  I'll not be responding here further as addressing issues is not your cup of tea.

@safelibraries @BackOffImStarving Oh, yes?  Please tell me more about these polls.  What was the sample population?  What were the margins of error?  Did the sample population for said polls subscribe to a certain demographic?  Did the polls focus on actual pornography, or did it specifically ask about literature with some brief sexual references in it?

Before you start quoting "reliable" polls, you should consider the source.  Your American Liberty Association is a bunch of religious nuts who don't want to pay taxes and who don't want the government to tell them what to do, unless the government mandate is based in religion.

"The American Liberty Association was established to provide a platform for individuals who believe in Judeo-Christian values and libertarian political philosophy."

Come on, tell me more about the values and common sense you so clearly lack.

@CloudGang @BackOffImStarving You certainly do have some daddy issues if you equate governing bodies with father figures. It's difficult to even have a conversation with you, as you keep going off on tangents that have more to do with your paranoid delusions about feminists controlling you than the topic at hand.  Did you understand my comment about the books at all?  You want government to keep out of our personal lives, yet when I said the SAME THING in the context of to not wanting the government to overstep their bounds by banning books because of some whiny parents, you go off on me for pushing feminist values and A64.  Please tell me you see the irony in that.

@CloudGang Yes, because I PERSONALLY drafted and signed into law A64, idiot.
