The friends and family of Marvin Booker gathered with supporters on Tuesday at an event commemorating the third anniversary of this death. Booker, a 56-year-old street preacher, died after being arrested and taken to the Van Cise-Simonet Detention Center, where he got into an altercation with sheriff's deputies; he had been wanted for failing to appear on a drug-paraphernalia charge. Booker's family has sued the city, although there is currently no court date set for a trial. Attendees were asked to bring shoes that could be donated to needy individuals.

The shoes are symbolic to the family since the altercation began after Booker tried the retrieve his shoes in the jail, his family says.

The oft-repeated claim that the vast majority of cops are good does a real disservice to the People of Denver.  There are many violent, dangerous officers roaming our streets who have committed multiple felonies such as murder, assault, perjury, and robbery; gotten away with it; and have been returned to duty.  A minority of those have been diverted to desk jobs -- these are the police who tell people trying to file complaints against police misconduct with the Internal Affairs Bureau that they are in the wrong place -- but many are still armed, on the street, and about to commit more crimes agains the citizenry.  It will be interesting if some citizen mentally and physically prepared for an encounter with these criminal police kills one in self-defense, because the truth has a nasty habit of occasionally leaking out.
