Video: See suspects in Colfax-Broadway shooting that locked down State Capitol

Big photos, video below.
We usually think of street shootings taking place late at night, when darkness cloaking the figures is illuminated only by muzzle flashes. But yesterday, guns blasted in broad daylight, at one of the busiest parts of the city: Colfax between Broadway and Lincoln. As a result, both the State Capitol and the Governor's Mansion were briefly locked down. Three thus-far-unnamed suspects have been taken into custody shortly thereafter, and while their names have yet to be released, we've gotten a glimpse of them thanks to witness video from the scene. See it and more below.

Here's the Denver Police Department tweet announcing what was happening....

...followed by this amended update:

What happened? According to a witness who spoke with 9News, a man was walking on one side of Colfax when he eyeballed another guy across the street. They pair apparently knew each other, and they don't seem to have been involved with a love affair -- because one of the men fired a couple shots in the direction of the second fella, who returned the favor times two, squeezing off an estimated four shots.

A couple of witnesses at the scene got video of the chaos immediately after the gunfire rang out. Here's a screen capture of people running....

...as well as images of the one man being taken into custody, after being apprehended on the 1500 block of Grant:

The following images show another man in police care as well:

Both the State Capitol and the Governor's Mansion were locked down for twenty minutes or so while all this was going on, after which things got back to semi-normal -- yet with the knowledge that time of day doesn't necessarily preclude the possibility that two morons will start shooting at each other without thought to the innocent bystanders nearby.

Here's a 9News report with more of the video:

More from our Calhoun: Wake-Up Call archive circa April: "4/20 shooting at Civic Center Park: What I saw and heard."

Oh, and journalists of Colorado?  Can we make sure we're investigating how firearms are acquired and divulge that information in EVERY story concerning guns?  As an addendum to each of these pieces, I'd like to know how and where the weapon was purchased, who it was registered to, and whether or not the gunmen's prior record should have been caught by a background check.  This way the public can formulate more informed opinions on our gun laws.

Thank you.

Awesome, now we can talk about this till the next daytime shooting. How exactly does the conversation get to " police. State"? It was two thugs pulling out guns and shooting at each other during the day time. Now who's gonna bring up 2nd amendment bullshit? And not to beat a dead horse, but where the hell does " police state" come from? And cowardly about not wanting to get shot?

I'm sure if we had more gun laws these idiots wouldn't have been armed.

Charles, how exactly is this incident "proof" that we live in a police state? Do you even know what that phrase means? The only buildings on lock down were the State Capitol and Governor's mansion. It appears that all of the people in the area at the time were running away, rather than being forced away by the police. If you would have gladly strolled down the street, it's a shame you weren't there. Fucking mouth breather.

Yeah, keep telling your self to serve and protect, if you say it enought it must be true.

Or, um, lockdown to assess the situation and ensure that innocent bystanders don't get shot. To serve and protect, remember? It's hardly cowardly to not want to get shot.

Please do some research before making yourself look stupid. The current background check is specifically designed to NOT allow felons to pass the check or purchase weapons. There is no "Gun Registry" in this state or the US. When a firearm is purchased in Colorado from a legal gun dealer the S/N is recorded on the sales slip and only on the sales slip. It is not included in the background check. The only thing that can be traced with the gun is to what gun store it was shipped. If the store owner doesn't want to provide the sales record he doesn't have to and there is no way to identify the original purchaser of the gun. When  gun is sold "Legally" in Colorado between individuals it no requires a background check on the purchaser but the gun S/N is never included. The useless new laws have no effect on tracking firearms. The vast mojority of guns used in this kind of case are provided by a previous crime of B & E.

@JimTom You have a talent for shortsightedness.

With adequate backround checks, these men will not be able to purchase guns legally when they DO get out, which considering the lack of injuries involved, will not be that long.  If we make the procurement of guns prohibitive to already convicted felons, we are eliminating an impressive amount of violent crime.

@JimTom Exactly, we just need more background checks and mag limits!

@Charles Gleason I know you can't accept it Chuckie, but the police are NOT responsible for your lack of intelligence.

@Charles Gleason And your opinion isn't a little bit biased! NUT-TAPPER!!!!!

@chekje84 You're talking about fuckass criminals, who haven't been and will not be disarmed and stopped by dumbass "mag limit" laws, and, unbeknownst to the average libtard, think and behave in a completely different way than law-abiding citizens.

@Charles Gleason Yeah, Chuck. Some gang-banging dumbfucks shoot at each other (and miss, damnit) and that becomes the catalyst to your infowars-tin-foil hat-diatribe. Smoke up, Johnny.

@steppesmusic @JimTom The procurement of guns is already illegal for felons. Do some research before you start talking crap. I will bet you they are already convicted felons and purchased their weapons on the street. No gun contol laws will stop people like this from getting guns. Until the left realizes this and start looking at the real issue this will continue.
