Dale Eaton, on death row for killing Denver's "Lil Miss:" Is he bipolar?

The rape and murder of Lisa Kimmell, aka "Lil Miss," was one of the most shocking and brutal crimes of its era -- the subject of multiple television shows and a book written by her mom that traces heartbreak over the course of more than a decade.

The killer of Denver-based Kimmell, Dale Eaton, is on death row in Wyoming, but his attorneys continue to fight for his life. Now, a Colorado psychiatrist speaking at a hearing looking into claims of inadequate defense says he may suffer from bipolar disorder.

The Murder of Lil Miss by Sheila Kimmel describes how Lisa, a manager at a local Arby's restaurant, left her Denver home for Billings, Montana, where she planned to visit some friends. She drove a Honda with a personalized license plate reading "LIL MISS."

But she never reached her destination, prompting a frantic search that ended in the worst conceivable way. Here's an excerpt from the book:

Lisa Marie Kimmel.
Eight days after her disappearance, our worst nightmare materialized. Two fisherman found Lisa's body early Saturday afternoon, April 2nd, 1988. She hadn't had a wreck. At the tender age of eighteen, Lisa had been raped repeatedly, held hostage for six days in an old school bus without electricity or running water, subjected to untold torture, hit on the head so hard that it caused a four-inch skull fracture, and stabbed six times. Her body had been dropped from the Old Government Bridge near Casper, Wyoming, into the cold North Platte River. Our beautiful daughter was gone.

Within weeks, Lisa's story was featured on the TV program Unsolved Mysteries (A&E's Cold Case Files also highlighted it), and over the months that followed, a number of clues surfaced, with arguably the strangest being a note left on her grave that October. It read:
Lisa --

There are'nt (sic) words to say how much you're missed
the pain never leaves
it's so hard without you
you'll always be alive in me.
Your death is my painful loss but Heaven's sweet gain.

Love always, Stringfellow Hawke

By the way, Stringfellow Hawke was a character played by actor Jan Michael Vincent on the network series Airwolf.

Years later, the handwriting on the note was matched to Eaton's -- but that wasn't the key to breaking the case.

Find out which prisons have a high rape probability, then pick the bigger baddest raper out of those prisons and put this guy in the same cell as him and let big bubba have his way all day everyday with this waste of space

If I had my way, every single murderer would be put to death in exactly the same way as their victim, with the exact same weapon(s), and in the exact same place...all where possible, and if not then get as close as you can to recreating it. If they had multiple victims, injure them just enough with each different weapon to do the job, in total. If this was done each and every time, without exception, I guarantee you the perp would think twice before committing the crime.

Further, I do not care about this trash's medical conditions or childhood. Once he's murdered someone, all my sympathy just kind of wanes, a bit. He's lost any legitimate claims to sympathy, at that point.

This guy should have been dead twenty-five years ago. What is he still doing, drawing air?

I was Lisa Kimmel's 9th Grade boyfriend in Billings. You could have never hoped to know a nicer sweeter girl if you tried. This assclown that took her life needs to be skinned and soaked in rubbing alcohol for a few days. He deserves the most medival of treatment for his crimes.  Lisa's parents are far too gracious. I have huge respect for the surviving family. I frequently check his status and he somehow magically remains alive. I just don't understand it.

I am Bipolar Type I, much more serious than Type II.  I have never even had the thought of kidnapping, torturing, sexually abusing and killing anyone.  And this scumbag has been allowed to live for 25 years?  Fry him.

I agree. People on bi polar who arent on meds are still pretty stable and dont kidnap murder and rape someone and then BURY THEIR DAMN CAR. A WHOLE FUCKING HONDA BURIED. Bi Polar or not thats some smart shit and he needs to be taken out and lined up by a firing squad of cowboys and friends and family. Thats the cheapest way to kill someone on death row.

Pft. Tons of people are bipolar...most of them don't rape and kill children. A mad-dog gets put down, all the same.

Bipolar is something made up by people who want money, every person alive is "bipolar" it would be worrisome if someone didn't have emotions, get sad when something sad happens, get mad when necessary. Not being able to control your temper is NO excuse for killing someone

Why does being insane or bipolar mean you should be on earth if you kill or torture people No matter what it constitutes the death penalty and with spending all this ridiculous extra money

does the fact that he's bipolar change the fact that he raped and killed her? This bastard should have been fried long ago.

Welcome to the good ol' U.S. 'justice' system -- where denying true, REAL justice is as much a part of the system as organs are to the body...and where pond scum like this loser have been kept alive and well in prison for many years longer than his victim's lifetime.

no...it lets animals know that they will pay...DEARLY!  for their sick crimes!

Kristen, putting people to death for murder is much more accurate. You're attempting to equate the two, which cannot be done. The act of murder is a premeditated, unjust taking of a life, whereas execution is the recompense for the first act.

And...lest the grossly-misunderstood Commandment against 'killing' comes to mind, that commandment states that you will not MURDER...and the punishment for breaking that commandment, interestingly enough, was the death penalty.

Anything short of the death penalty for murder is NOT justice, period -- and it is precisely the attitude otherwise that has lead to more murder.

@michael.roberts i'm hoping that the "comment of the day" prize is your sarcasm at work because there's nothing clever or deep about her comment.  it is typically shallow, inane, trite, cliche, vapid ---  need i go on?  it's stupid !!!  the people who say these retarded things are the same people who haven't got a clue what it's like to lose a loved one to a heinous torture/ murder.   mixed message or not, these devils from hell deserve to be killed slowly and agonizingly.....  at least then we can be sure of one thing:  they won't do THAT again.   and that's enough reason for me.
