Big photos, video below.
Magpul Industries, one of Colorado's largest firearms manufacturers, has announced plans to move from the state due to new gun-control laws. But that doesn't mean all businesses of this sort are shunning Colorado. The council in Johnstown has just given approval to the Liberty Firearms Institute, an enormous facility that will soon become the biggest operation of its type in Colorado, and among the largest in the country. Look below for the eye-popping details, architectural renderings and more.

Here's the way the project is described in a presentation to the Johnstown council included in its August 5 meeting packet:

Liberty Firearms Institute is a unique to Northern Colorado retail, educational and entertainment experience for everyone, not just the firearms and hunting enthusiast. Liberty Firearms Institute will not only provide a wide selection of guns, accessories and outdoor gear but also a full restaurant, multiple classrooms for training and education and a state of the art underground shooting range, all within a completely indoor, fully secure, environmentally safe and virtually noise-free facility.

This color rendering of the Liberty Firearms Institute was provided to the Fort Collins Coloradoan.
How massive is the project? According to the document, USA Liberty Arms, the company behind the institute, is under contract to purchase a 29,359 acre lot, on which developers will construct a 100,000 square foot building, with approximately half the space dedicated to retail, the restaurant, classrooms, office space and member services, and the rest devoted to a fifty-sixty lane shooting range

The building will sit at the intersection of Thompson Parkway and, appropriately enough, Ronald Reagan Boulevard.

The institute is characterized as a "destination concept.... Currently, anyone that wishes to purchase a firearm, attend training classes to learn how to safely use it, obtain certification to carry it, practice its use, or simply enjoy its recreational use, requires that individual to travel all over the region to random, often distant facilities, often waiting in lines or standing outside in inclement weather. Liberty Firearms Institute will provide one location that addresses all of these needs in a safe, secure and controlled environment."

A facility this large is expected to generate plenty of revenue. The presentation notes that "Liberty Firearms Institute will include an extension of the USA Libert Arms gun store currently located on East Harmony Road in Fort Collins. Approximately 30,000 SF of the Liberty Firearms Institute building will be dedicated to the gun store."

The current store generated from $5,195 to $10,079 in sales tax revenue for the State of Colorado for each of 2013's first three months, and between $5,843 and $11,338 per month to the City of Fort Collins over the same period. Those numbers are expected to go up by 50 percent once the institute is open -- and that's only the beginning. "USA Liberty Arms projects overall sales revenue at the Liberty Firearms Institue of $10M the first year," the document states.

CBS4 reports that USA Liberty Arms hopes to break ground on the project next month and open for business in August 2014..

Not that it may never have happened but I've never read about any 'incidents' in the parking lot of gun stores. We'll be living in that subdivision probably around the same time Liberty Arms is open for business and I can't think of a safer place. Many law enforcement officers live in that subdivision, also. Would much rather this operation than a Walmart in terms of traffic and safety! My guess is that most anti-gun folks have probably never learned how to use a gun responsibly if it all. Also, this brings us back to blaming silverware for people's weight. The common thread among gun incidents is mental health NOT the weapon.

Are they going to have a movie theater and kindergarten class simulator? Holmes and Lanza both used Magpul products.

I'm so looking forward to having this facility available to train and socialize with my firearms friendly community.  I used to sell t-shirts at most of the northern colorado gun shows and I can tell you, I've never been around a friendlier more trustworthy group of people.  I'm a "minority" female and I've been show the utmost respect and consideration at gun shows, shops and shooting ranges.  I think the more patience, understanding and respect we show to people who are different than us, the better environment we create.

What I've learned from our firearms friendly community:
- Question authority.
- When a sane person is armed, crazy people get off fewer shoots.
- It's better to be your own hero.
- Never trust your life or the life of someone you love to a cheap gun.
- The goal is to eliminate threats, not create them.
- 'Gun Control' is actually victim disarmament.
- The stronger you become, the gentler you will be.

And my favorite quote right now is - "This country has a Mental-Health-Problem disguised as a Gun-Problem... and a Tyranny-Problem disguised as a Security-Problem."  -  Joe Rogan

No. I have nothing against people having guns, but I can't stand the attitude of people at gun shows and shooting ranges. They all act like their penises grew 10 inches. Do they let black people in this place, or is that too "thuggish" for the Skynard assholes?

The video is funny. The old guy, who most likely has gun owning neighbors, claim "they've addressed the safety issues inside", so it seems the only objection is the parking lot, where " accidents do happen"? The fear of guns is strong, but for some reason, the parking lot of the police department, or gun shows "with all those guns going in and out" is fine, but offer safety classes and restaurants, and the parking lot turns dangerous.

What would this un-affected homeowner propose as a parking lot safety measure? Police with more guns? Perhaps some no shooting signs? Better mass transit for gun owners?

There are guns in every parking lot in Colorado, whether you know about them or not. The only difference with this parking lot is it will have a sign that says "Liberty" on it, and that's what really scares this guy, and so many others.

@Timothy Hutchinson Spoken like a true idiot Timothy. You forgot that The movie theatre lanza shot up was a Gun Free Criminal Safe Zone that left other movie patrons totally defenseless, and you also forgot that Sandy Hook was also a Gun Free Criminal Safe Zone.

@Timothy Hutchinson From what I recall Holmes used a 100 round drum magazine. Magpul doesn't make a 100 round drum magazine.

@Timothy Hutchinson I know quite a few people of african american decent who are excellent marksmen.  Your statement sounds silly . . . and a little racists.  I'm not being naive and ignoring the obvious past, but just trying to build a better future.  You've obviously had different experiences at gun shows than I have, hopefully you can work through that.  Maybe a nice Gov't Mule show or something?  Anyway, good luck and farewell <3
