Reader: Not everyone who goes to a megachurch is a weirdo lemming

megachurch.205x205.jpg
As a tie-in to this week's feature article, "The Prodigal Pastor," Alan Prendergast wrote about Colorado's seven biggest megachurches. Unsurprisingly, the latter topic inspired many folks to denigrate such jumbo institutions. But there were also numerous defenders, including this reader.

nickbrown79 writes:

For all of you posting and bashing these "mega churches" and the people who attend -- I'd guarantee that you have at least a couple friends that go to one of these churches. And I bet they aren't crazy weirdo lemmings that so many people state they are.

Will you find a couple weirdos? Probably. But the majority of the people that attend are normal, smart, productive, successful pillars of their communities. The whole "people who go to church are stupid" rant is getting tired.

Sometimes things that are conspicuously missing go unnoticed, but I think you'll realize that us weirdo Christians aren't calling you names or degrading your beliefs or insulting your intelligence like your side so very much likes to do.

Riddle me this -- when was the last argument you won by calling the other person an idiot. When was the last time insulting someone's intelligence got the response of "oh wow, thanks for showing me my stupidity. I'm changing my opinion." So why does your side feel the need to constantly make fun of us or bash our beliefs? Do you expect some sort of change to occur by repeating the same thing over and over? Or is it that you aren't trying to win the argument at all. And if that's the case, then the only other reasonable explanation for your comments would be to just spew hateful things. And that makes you no better than someone who picks on other people for no reason.

I read tons of books. I sometimes go to the church to supplement the reading.

@krista if you want to learn, read a book or something...preferably written by someone whose livelihood does not depend on your attendance to their church.

I don't think it's fair to be aggressive or to attack any group of people. Bigotry and stereotyping are not cool. That being said, has any one actually read the bible? It sounds made up. And modern western Christianity is based on Paul's teachings, not Jesus', and Paul was a damn narcissistic cult leader and a real asshole! Anyway. People can still believe that crazy shit if they want to and they're not harming any one by it...now that topic of harm could spawn some serious debate though methinks.

I don't intend to be bullied by a hundred mindless bigots. You've got some kind of Ned Flanders stereotype in mind I think.

I guess when a person doesnt agree with following Christians beliefs there are christians that have to lead the way and spew hateful insults. Go read your book written by man and then translated improperly. Adhere to the hateful words and thoughts and be the lemming that is has embraced hate and twisted ideaologies.

please. These megachurches are constantly attempting to legislate morality, and telling non-believers that they will ROT IN HELL FOR ALL ETERNITY if they don't hold with their archaic religion. And NOW, they want me to have pity-party for them because people are taking some (well-deserved) pot-shots?

i'm not one for one for proselytizing, but there's this thing called karma...

No, she does not make a good point. Because as far as I know, atheists do not believe she deserves to be raped by fire and pitchforks for ever and ever and ever. Atheists don't believe in human sacrifices, worship a tyrannical and malevolent imaginary dictator, and we don't force our beliefs onto kids. We don't go door-to-door, we don't waste millions on giant cathedrals, and we don't believe everyone was born into filth. Christians rarely get 'made fun of' but the time has come for all good people to make their dissent of religion known.

@james gold. Have you been to flatirons? I consider myself agnostic i go to learn and have never felt what you described.

Any freethinker who has ever stepped into one (a megachurch), has undoubtedly felt that creepy feeling that says "holy shit... this is what a cult looks like." I'm more of a live and let live atheist rather than an atheist that wants to thrash people and call them morons and lemmings. I'm just not into cults, that's all. Especially ones that have their minds so entrenched in hate and judgement. They say only their god can judge yet... well, you know the rest of that story.

And you ostriches can stick to your silly beliefs. We're not here to argue, because that's a waste of time and energy. You can call us ignorant, but you're the ones with an imaginary god.

Um, it's 2013. Duh. And since all these preachers are secretly hiding their warped lives, I figure so are all the people who give them money. Ted haggard spoke to president Bush every Monday morning about the anti gay right wing, then drove to Denver and scored meth and ass sex every Monday night from a male hooker. For years. Wow. But don't worry, he went and got help, not for the meth addiction, but for being gay. He's cured now.

that reader GUARANTEES that everyone knows at least several people who attends a megachurch. i think someone needs to stop sucking jesus' balls and come back to reality. megachurches are nothing more than million dollar corporations filled with brainwashed losers/lemmings...which ever you prefer.

Organized religion followers of any sort = lemmings blind ones at that.

C'mon NickBrown.  People make fun of you for a variety of reasons, but I'll bet the most popular reason is; we're bored.  Message boards are an entertaining alternative to setting things on fire.  Or it could mean that we think you're stupid.  Not in a hateful way, but in a stating-the-obvious way.  Why do you comment?  To persuade us to think that you actually are enlightened? Nah.  We don't believe it.  We think you're just as bored as us.  That's why you go to a mega-church and your mind wanders during the service while you check out the MILFs and wonder how the pastor got his hair that way.  You're just marking time on this shitty place called earth so you can get to the good stuff in Heaven.  So don't take it personally.  You'll be rewarded in Heaven.  We promise.  And have a little compassion for us, will yah?
