Reader: If Northern Coloradans don't like our state, don't use our name

colorado.flag.noco.205x205.jpg
Patricia Calhoun's post featuring suggested new symbols for Northern Colorado, the proposed name for numerous counties currently considering secession from the state, triggered a huge response from commenters, a lot of it negative in the extreme. Here's one example of many.

John Martinez writes:

If they don't like Colorado then please don't use our name. From now on, can we just call them South Nebraska instead?

Yup, it's a conservative effort to pit one group against another while doing whatever dirty deed is up their sleeve. Not all folks in Northern Colorado are going to be voting for the current county commissioners as these commissioners find time for symbolism but not any actual work. The secession talk is farce and you're all falling into the trap of fighting amongst yourselves and calling each other names. Not everyone in Northern Colorado is thrilled with this waste of time and money.

Seriously, anyone of these haters can move to Nebraska or Texas or any other redneck state. I'll help them pack.

it's not all Colorado politicians involved in this lunacy... only the northern ones.. don't put this all on the rest of the state.

not really - there is a real movement here that will see a 'Yay" or "nay" you are either for or against.

Why don't they call it Colo-BLAH-do and annex everything east of the airport?  We can probably throw in the CoS metro area for good measure.

If they get their way I'm moving to a non liberal biast Colorado. That's what they're doing creating the correct government. If our Colorado appointed politicians would get their head out of the a$$ they would not want to become their own state.

with these kind of comments and the anger that is stirring from the ones who are calling Northern Colorado "angry"I am understanding more. I do see a huge difference in Colorado counties, not that its a bad thing. However in the last years agriculture had taken a back seat to the progressive agenda and I think they are sick of it. Colorado has changed so much it might just be a good thing.

that land where the wells are, are already owned by companies... most of which are based in denver or other areas... they couldnt tap into it if they wanted to. Can you please elaborate on that last part as well, because the red states are the largest users of government handouts.

Uhh, they have a lot of the State's natural wealth up there, and with a fraction of the urban welfare crowd to support. They would be just fine financially, where "SOuthern CO" would be struggling even worse. It would actually be an example of why Dem policy is horribly ineffective.

I have said it before and I will say it again most of us living in Northern Colorado LOVE COLORADO!!! Trust me if I could convince the ones in favor of this to head out to Nebraska or some other place I would. Westword I have been an avid reader of your magazine and your blog for years and recently I have felt so degraded by this farcical journalism. You are becoming as cheep as the hookers in the back of your magazine. I love my little square state and in November I will be voting to keep it that way. See you on the slopes this winter.

People on all sides really need to get over themselves. We all complain about our state/country from time to time and we should. We live in a place where you can state your opinion about our government without complete fear of retribution and I'd be willing to bet nobody is innocent of ever saying anything bad about either. Point is, stop being hypocrites and let these guys do whatever they want, because lord knows you will soon enough.

There is nothing at stake. They have said themselves that this is nothing more than symbolism.

Doug: and the front range will continue to buy their products, tax revenue will remain in Northern Colorado, as will the profits...

Ever wonder why the rest of rural Colorado isn't jumping on the succession bank wagon ? You don't see folks in Delta, Rifle, Trinidad all howling about being mistreated. The issues have nothing to do about representation, being ignored or anything but the oil production companies in Northern Colorado do not want the state to regulates their business.

Nobody said they don't like our state or its name, just our government. They lost an election, they were convinced they were going to win, and now they're protesting.

It is all posturing for politics sake, it will not happen. I say let them go and move on. But if we allow a farce like this, no reason not to make Washington DC a state or Puerto Rico, Guam, etc.

Doug Hubka

This is an issue that warrants a few jabs thrown at it. The ONLY reason this section of Colorado wants to secede is regulations on fracking and controlling the oil industry.

Cut off from what? The aggrieved in NE Colorado are the ones that want to do the cutting. NE Colorado are net tax donors while the front range are the net tax receivers.

Why do we make sport of insulting? Let's focus on the issues. There's too much at stake.

This kind of carpet bashing plays right into the hands of the gas companies...uh, I mean secessionists. Think about how the people in Northern Colorado will react to this? They're going to root for the home team, whose home office isn't really home. I'm really disappointed Westword.
