Peter Boyles beats ratings at station that fired him in first month at KNUS

Peter Boyles.
Last month, longtime morning-show host Peter Boyles debuted at KNUS mere weeks after being fired at KHOW following an incident involving longtime producer Greg Hollenback. And his audience appears to have followed him.

We've obtained listenership figures for Boyles's first month on the air, and during his time slot, KNUS, which had been a relative a.m. ratings also-ran prior to his arrival, beat KHOW handily in the most commonly used demographic. Here are the details.

During a late June interview announcing his jump to KNUS, Boyles told us that he and Hollenbeck, who'd been friends and worked together for many years, got into a heated exchange during a high-profile June broadcast -- a 9News crew was on hand to watch Tom Tancredo announce his latest run for governor -- that ended with the host pulling the producer toward him by a lanyard around his neck, leaving red marks.

The scene was reported to KHOW management and Boyles was taken off the air while a decision was made about his fate. The suspension continued until the expiration of his contract, which had been under negotiation at the time of the incident. At that point, he was fired, but soon found a suitor in KNUS -- and after an unexpected delay that pushed back his debut, he took to the air amid congratulations from listeners who called the outlet in droves.

From the looks of the document we obtained, most of them appear to be sticking around. The ranker we received shows July ratings for three Clear Channel stations -- KOA, KHOW and KKZN -- plus KNUS in two demos: 12+ (listeners age twelve and older) and 6+ (listeners age six and over). Most stations don't use these particular demos in their sales pitches to advertisers, preferring to concentrate on niches -- women between the ages of 25 and 54, for example. But they do provide a broad sense of programs' popularity, and by that measure, Boyles got off to a good start.

mandy.connell.facebook.jpg
Mandy Connell, Boyles's successor at KHOW, didn't take over until August.
Let's look at 12+ ratings Mondays through Fridays during the 6-7 a.m. hour (Boyles's show starts at 6 a.m.). Over that span, KOA remained king, with a 6.60 audience share. But KNUS finished next, with a 3.30 share, followed by KHOW, with a 2.70, and KKZN trailing the quartet with a 1.30.

The numbers held in similar fashion in regard to 12+ Monday through Friday ratings in the 7-8 a.m. hour. KOA: 5.40 share; KNUS, 2.90 share; KHOW, 1.70 share; KNUS, .80 share. And the rankings and percentages are mighty close in the 6+ demographic.

Granted, KHOW was still using fill-in hosts during July. It wasn't until this month that Boyles's replacement, Mandy Connell, took over microphone duties at the signal full time.

With that in mind, the ratings for August and, especially, September could be even more telling. By then, we should get a better idea about the repercussions about Boyles's high-profile dismissal and whether or not he'll continue to get his revenge on his ex-employer over the long term.

I am a 72 yr female that is a dyed-in-the-wool Peter Boyles fan!  i have listened to Pete since his days with Bob Lee!  I am retired now and my alarm still goes off at 5:00 am or 6:00 am to listen faithfully.  I learn more about current affairs from Pete's great and credible sources - fantastic reporters and authors.  He is my History teacher and current events instructor - why? Because Peter is by far the most well-read person I know - and he is not held with blinders keeping him from seeing the whole picture.  His mind is thirsty for truth and knowledge and he is not held back with prejudice towards mankind and he sees through what these politicians are doing to the citizens of their countries - mainly through the Big LIar's Club running and ruining this wonderful country and world we were given to be the Guardians of and for.  He is also not hindered with religious rhetoric, fears, domination from leaders that tell you what to believe - who to believe in - and if you don't you get to go to hell!  What wonderful teachings to live under - fear and control.  Pete can think on his own and people cannot stand that - they have to have someone tell them what to do and how to think.  I guess you have figured it out - Peter is a Breath Of Fresh Air and his own master.

These ratings are from July, and this is good, but I want to seem Boyles kick Mandys' ass in the ratings. Also if the people who listened to her in Louisville expect that when they listen to her over the internut  (Not a misspelling) expect her show to be one that will be mostly about things Louisville Things, they will be sadly  disappointed

Boyles is not perfect, but better than anything else on at 6am!!! he can be an idiot on certain issues, but he is calculating if he will draw more based on that position ???

"...women between the ages of 25 and 54, for example."

Boyles appeals to angry white men who are fine with low-facts and high-ranting. He can forget any sizeable audience of women.

Only two thing swill slow the Boyles' onslaught: 1) KNUS' incredibly weak signal: and, Boyles blind hatred for G. W. Bush which rivals Obama's.

Boyles is and always will be a jive-ass punk-ass supporter of Zionist bigotry and Abrahamic mythology of the lowest degree. Michael Roberts - you should be ashamed of being an ass kisser of this moron.

I listened for a couple shows and it was like a rerun of the past 4 yrs. As for Connell, a right wingnut. I listen to music now.

Why does Westword have this perverse obsession with Peter Boyles. He's just another opinionated loudmouthed jerk with a radio show. If you ignore him, he'll go away.

I'd like to have him start rebuking Rosen with an online column if he cannot do it over the air.  It is high time a Libertarian dissects and destroys Denver's Ultimate Golf Course Republican and False Prophet.

Actually it is very refreshing not to be browbeat by Pete's ten cent academics and distorted versions of history. He reads a lot but doesn't really get all that much out of anything except to be able to recite facts. But grasping the big picture, particularly in history, and having wisdom, are things that elude Mr. Boyles to this day, and he will probably take that to his grave. Ironically, all of his reading has not opened his mind so much as hardened his own preconceived notions. He can pull a factoid out of the air to shoot down any rational and correct argument that would otherwise take apart his thinking process. Like the most hardened religious bigot he is so fond of berating, he is in his own way a bigot himself.

what's a better PhotoShop image export, Mandy Connell's publicity photo or the birth certificate for
Frank Marshall Davis Jr.?

Love the Boyles show, while it's hard to pickup here in Fort Collins. I've now learned I can purchase a WiFi table radio, so it won't be long before I can turn off the computer in the mornings and listen on the new radio.

As for Mandy Connell, I've not been to impressed, poor interviews and too much girl oriented chit-chat. If you're going to replace Boyles, you'd better be smart, real smart, because he has educated his listeners to such a level, the average talk host knows less than the listeners. I feel sorry for Mandy, she is up against a host ( Boyles ) that should be on the national stage. He's really that good!

That's nice. Now can you lazy journalists please start talking about some important issues instead of a bunch of ego jack asses who can't play nice together?

So Peter Boyles is in the Denver market for 25 years or more and has built up a following. Now he goes to another station and the story is that he is beating ratings from a new comer that no one knows or has head about.

So what, you would certainly expect that from the personality driven talk show crowd.

Of course he beat KHOW's ratings. He made KHOW in the AM. Now he is kicking their ass. Greg the pusillanimous punk can bask in his victim-dom. Go Peter and KHOW, you can blow me. Cheers

I can't listen to Peter now because he starts too late. Back to music in the morning.

@duckster74 Is he still bringing up Bush every day? That is pathetic, at this point, demented. He really should get help for that.

@kozan He sounds like a stone cold moron when he claims that Islam shares roots with Christianity and Judaism. Only the most superficial people believe that crap. And he even has Spencer on to talk to him directly, for years, and still he is so confused.

@John Twigg Because the owner of Westword  is an opinionated loudmouth jerk with a newspaper.

@BoylesisTheMan Hey can't because he would be accused of being and anti-semite and there is probably a no-bad mouthying Rosen clause in Boyle's settlement with Clear Channel.

TT77

@BoylesisTheMan Pete knows he can never do any sort of online column that has a response forum because it would be way too easy for people to take apart his shallow arguments there. On air he can interrupt and change the subject back to his favorite hobby horses and straw men, but online where someone could compose their thoughts and post them he wouldn't stand the remotest chance of winning half the arguments he thinks he wins on air.

Distorting the facts makes you a top contender for a nightly show on MSNBC or an anchor slot at KUSA.

Hollenback was Boyles' producer not his boss and Dan Mandis should have fired him as well for being the instigator in an incident that was blown way out of proportion.

Peter projects his fetish for Neil Bush onto the entire family.

Boyles didn't receive a settlement. Clear Channel simply showed him the door.

Peter is an intellectual lightweight compared to Rosen, particularly when it comes to the subject of economics.

TT77
TT77

@duckster74 @TT77 Not even close, I saw through Peter's shtick years ago. He is basically a liberal who uses a few key words and phrases to fool some people that he is not. His gay obsession is a huge turnoff, as is his Christian bashing and distorted versions of history. But he has enough "facts" that he regurgitates that he fools most people. It is sometimes interesting the way he can spin events from history to make his (liberal) point but make it sound like he is just reciting facts.

In this economy, people with the skill set of Hollenback don't have a lot of employment options.
