At 6 p.m. Mountain Time on August 11, CNN will broadcast WEED, a documentary hosted by Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Previously a medical marijuana doubter, Gupta has done a 180, as witnessed by his just-published essay "Why I changed my mind on weed" -- and in it, he mentions Charlotte Figi, a Colorado child with a rare disorder who's made remarkable progress due to cannabis oil. Paige Figi, Charlotte's mom, who's featured along with her family in WEED, is pleased their story's going national -- and thrilled by Gupta's open-mindedness.

"The only reason I'm doing this is the chance of helping another child," Paige says.

As explained in a WEED preview, Charlotte, a twin born in 2006, was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome, an uncommon, and serious, form of epilepsy in which a cellular mutation causes clusters of seizures, some of which last more than half an hour.

The ailment proved virtually untreatable, Paige says, and the impact of Dravet "covered all aspects of her life. Not just seizures but cognitive delays and feeding, sleeping and behavior issues -- everything."

Moreover, pharmaceuticals prescribed by a slew of doctors and other treatments didn't do much to help. "We might get a small break with a drug here or there," she allows, and a dietary regimen that required food to be weighed and measured to within a gram -- "I had to put together an Excel spreadsheet to figure out the ingredients" -- offered some relief of symptoms. But for the most part, Paige says, "medication was very detrimental to her."

Then, about a year and a half ago, Matt Figi, Charlotte's dad, who was serving in Afghanistan as a member of the Green Berets (he's still working in the country, but as a private contractor), suggested trying marijuana-related treatments.

After doing some research, the Figis decided to give cannabis oil a shot with help from the Realm of Caring Foundation, run by well-known Denver-area marijuana-scene figure Josh Stanley and his brothers. According to its website, the nonprofit organization is dedicated to providing "a better quality of life for residents of Colorado affected by cancer, MS, HIV/AIDS, epilepsy, Parkinson's...through the use of medicated cannabis oil provided by Indispensary/Stanley family."

Continue for more about the Figis, including a video preview of WEED and an interview with Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

So in other words Dr. Gupta was parroting back lies, and propaganda that have been false from the very beginning. In case anyone has forgotten, the Doctor's who presented studies for Harry Anslinger (the creator of D.E.A.) to congress admitted before they died that they had falsified the studies to say that cannabis produced brain damage and chromosome damage and harmed fetal development. The doctors did this for money but there was also a tangible backbone of racism. Anslinger himself was vehemently opposed to cannabis for racist reasons. In the south ignorant texans believed it gave mexican workers "superpowers" and in the north white kids and black kids were mixing at jazz clubs and the musicians were known to indulge because it enhanced their creativity. Anslinger was deeply concerned that jazz music and race mixing at jazz clubs would destroy the fabric of America. Who do we see listening to jazz music now? The alarming thing is that these preposterous and fraudulent rationales continued to the present day. The drug war that ensued denuded the american landscape of liberty and led to a disgraceful police state marked by many layers of conspiracy to brainwash the public into what ultimately became a central plank of conservative and republican ideology. The hippies and the anti war movements adoption of cannabis as a sacrament of enlightenment terrified the old order. The democrats proved cowardly and only too willing to go along if they were able to profit and profit they did from the massive supersizing of the legal system to exponential 10fold increases in corrections police and court budgets and personnel in the 1980s and 1990s. The conspiracy that resulted prevented any real medical research from being done into cannabis for the development of medicines. That's right folks they outlawed science from studying it at all unless it was to prove harmful effects. Corrupt laws kept anyone from studying cannabis with the intention of isolating medicines. Yup lawyers and cops with no medical or science backgrounds made decisions and the worlds oldest medicine, a medicine that archaeological and anthropological evidence shows has a past with humans that predates recorded history was considered poison and a scourge and the 80's and 90s generations were turned into lifelong criminals and felons thereby. We applaud Gupta's conversion but it seems disingenuous. The simple truth is that truth has finally prevailed. For decades a majority of Americans has believed it should be legalized but let's face it the legal system and our government no longer obey the will of the people. Despite that the approval rating for cannabis has finally become so high that it can no longer be ignored. Fighting the drug war has bankrupted the states and local communities and is one of the mechanisms of institutional racism. The work of Mr. Manning and Mr. Assange showed DEA engaging in all manner of illegal and criminal behavior throughout Latin America including tampering directly with and sabotaging the government of Evo Morales the first indigenous President of Bolivia. We did this to him and to them because they refused to go along with DEA and allow the importation of our drug war police state prison system. Gupta is going along with the trend because it is popular now. If Washington and Colorado hadn't already legalized and many other states ratified medical we wouldn't be having this conversation. Cannabis has been proven completely safe for most persons by recorded and American history. Hurray Dr. Gupta did the right thing but it's a little too long overdue. He had to have known the truth as do all those who dont profit from the lies a long time ago. The time to be a hero and stand up for the truth in the face of lies, conspiracy, and evil is already passed what you see here is a guy going along with the current popular trend because it helps ratings. Personally I'm wary of anything a tv doctor says.

Marijuana should be for everyone over 18 who wants or needs it. I found a great medical marijuana book that has great recipes, uses less valuable marijuana, and has smaller candies to use for pain on a daily basis: MARIJUANA - Guide to Buying, Growing, Harvesting, and Making Medical Marijuana Oil and Delicious Candies to Treat Pain and Ailments by Mary Bendis, Second Edition. How about just $2.99 for great e-book on medical marijuana? This book has great recipes for easy marijuana oil, delicious Cannabis Chocolates, and tasty Dragon Teeth Mints.

Great comment and thanks for posting - you've laid out the truth cogently and coherently, and have hit most of the nails on their respective heads. One minor issue that should be mentioned is that for thousands of years, Abrahamic Monotheism has been at war with the natural world, including indigenous ways of life that honor sacred plant medicines and relationships to power and wisdom that are beyond the confines of human-authored holy books. The war god yahweh is a jealous god, and his priests denounce any and all people that think for themselves and expose the hypocrisy of man-made fundamentalist male-dominated institutional religions. Abrahamic religions view the earth, the natural world, and man's nature as sinful and in need of redemption. Thankfully people are waking up and seeing through the lies of priests, politicians, and self-serving police states more concerned about money and control, than with freedom and enlightenment.

@muzzylu ... why should the magical benefits of marijuana be denied to those under 18 years old, you spamming bitch?

@rockymissouri1 As in CON ARTIST...  If he is truly being charitable he should release the strain to anyone that wants it...  Less than a year ago he was seeking investors for this "miracle strain"... which btw is a sham... all strains boil down to a cannabinoid profile and ratios of those cannabinoids... unless he's discovered a new cannabinoid the strain isn't unique.

@DonkeyHotay  "magical benefits of marijuana" - Why should the medical benefits of natural marijuana be viewed as supernatural?

muzzylu

@DonkeyHotay @muzzylu Because, you dope, it should be legal for EVERYONE over 18. Younger people should get a prescription from their doctor.

@muzzylu

Why should a doctor's prescription or recommendation be required for any minor that needs marijuana when there are numerous over the counter drugs and herbal medicines available for use by adults and CHILDREN without a prescription or recommendation?  Is marijuana more harmful than nyquil, tylenol, aspirin, sudafed, nasal sprays, eye drops, st john's wart, wintergreen oil, etc?
